Age of Rebellion STINKS!

By Desslok, in General Discussion

As someone who's entire life has been defined by books, I can attest I love the feel and the scent of them...

You can keep your 'kindles' and I-pads'. I'll keep my books.

And I NEVER EVER read a novel in electronic format.

A-friggin'-men.

As a fledgling writer, I also possess a fervent love of good, ol' fashioned books . As I grew up with my head in them, that admiration has never been lessened, at any point in my life.

I agree completely...

except when the book has developed some sort of mold or something. Blecht!

I hate that moldy old Record smell - the smell of mildew that you get when you sniff a Barry Manalow record from 1975 that you picked up at Goodwill.

Funny aside, A couple of years ago, I had a friend who helped build houses down in New Orleans through Habitat for Humanity. He came back with a can of FEMA water and let me have a taste - it tasted EXACTLY like that old record/book smell. It was liquid mildew! BLECH! I was burping that taste for DAYS!!!

I like the odors that my books eventually pick up, but I can't stand the chemical stench of some of these new binding glues, like used in EotE. I suspect what is being smelled here is a combination of the binding glue and the ink of the book. Unfortunately things like books don't have to be tested for toxic or carcinogenic compounds, and given China's record with such problems, I wouldn't want a book that stank to high heaven, as described here, in my library.

My new beta book has a waxy feel to the cover, but I like it. The Vault of the Dracolich module for D&D Next has the same feel, and I was kind of fascinated by it back then.

I don't believe my copy had any odd smell about it. Then again I don't make it a habit of smelling my new books.

But new book smell is like the best smell. I can't comprehend how people don't smell new books...

Personally, I like new action figure smell. I wish glade made that.

I didn't notice a bad smell, but half the writing is so small I need my magnifying glass to read it...again...Grr...BIGGER FONT GUYS!!!

Generally, yes - except when they have that chemical solvent releasing agent - sweet merciful crap, that stuff smells dreadful! Otherwise, I agree.

Hmm. I like OLD book smell more than new book smell. I have a paperback copy of the Hobbit from the 70's, and I like just flipping through the pages and getting a god whiff.

As far as books go, though, my AoR Beta copy is not too smelly. Smells like high-quality printed paper.

There were no bad smell on my copy. Maybe a batch got exposed to something at the printers?

Wonder if my copy will smell of the same AWESOMENESS I've come to expect. :D

I love the smell of new RPG books. My wife always laughs at me when I smell my new books.

You can get the smell from magic cards too if it's been a while.

Maybe it's as the Jedi Master Zao teaches. "Whether the book smells bad or good is determined by the balance within the consumer. Those who were not in balance with the Force would find the book foul or greasy; those with good balance would enjoy the book and have no issue with it."

FYI? My book smells of SUCCESS, AWESOMENESS, and HOT POTATOES.

Several years ago, I purchased an old copy of WEG's Imperial Sourcebook 1st Ed. It smells somewhat of Vicks Vaporub.

My copy didn't smell so bad, but it tasted really wierd.

Yeah, mine had a distinctive odor to it as well.

MM has AoR beta on clearance sale. Hopefully my second copy won't smell bad.

So I wonder, since MM has a ton of AoR Betas hanging around, if they'll jump on the Jedi Beta? Or will they be afraid of being again stuck with product they cant move (because as pointed out earlier, the beta has a very limited shelf life beyond the novelty)?

Could be. I think they ordered a bunch of copies because of the demand that the EotE Beta rulebook had, not considering that a lot of what pushed the desire for the EotE Beta was that it was an entirely new thing.

Then again, a lot of folks have been clamoring for Jedi, and Force & Destiny is the book that is going to deliver that character type, so there could be greater interest for the F&D Beta than there was for the AoR Beta.

Ultimately, it'll be a crap shoot, with MM and other online retailers taking the best guess they can while hedging their bets to avoid loosing their shirts.

Well I've stuck through Edge and Age I see no reason to stop now especially as it might silence all those people who're clamouring to play Jedi now!

No I'm not one of those, but its been well worth it since it kept me interested in Star Wars and highlighted bits I never even thought about (or wanted to in some case! ) still wondering if its worth picking up the new Star Wars Factfile since the last time round discovering a specific spoiler is what made me stop picking up the paperbacks and it wasn't the Vong who I still don't get and it wasn't Chewie's death since I don't see anyone else being taken out by another planet! (Still a step above that isn't a moon that's a battle station! ).

Not so sure about the specialisation decks though...
