By divinityofnumber, in Star Wars: The Card Game

Congrats, Shad!

It is nice to see that the Core Set and some of the early stuff is still relevant. The new stuff seems to have added flavor and some complexity, but not made the earlier cards irrelevant, which is nice. I think that this fact makes the game more appealing to new players. People can buy the Core Set, one deluxe expansion, and a few packs, and actually make a competitive deck. You can't say that type of thing about many games. Cheers to the development team for creating a game that introduces interesting new mechanics and play strategies without making all of the previous cards obsolete.

Looking forward to playing with you guys this summer...

We ran the Winter Kit today at FFG. 6 people in attendance so 3 rounds. After the third round there was a tie at 15 points so instead of SoS I had the top players go again for a tie-breaking 3rd game. Shad emerged victorious and claimed the Attack Pattern Delta playmat. Fitting...

Im going to have to play Navy and Rebel factions at the next event. Already used Smuggler, Jedi, Scum and Sith. The last two events were fun, lots of good decks right now. Im still surprised that my Jedi/Ewok deck beat that navy deck. Also Ewok Yoda is good. Ive already switched out Sector Lockdown for a copy of Imperial Entanglements. After playing saturday I realized I didnt have enough targets in my deck for Tractor Beam.

Store Championship at Level Up this afternoon. 6 in attendance. Shout out to Nick and Joe for making me play some brutal games.

Hey!

Can we maybe start talking dates for a store/local tournament?

June 11 (Sat) or June 12 (Sun)?

Too early?

Otherwise, I am hopeful I can come up a few times during a game night to update my collection with the newest sets...

Spring Kit tournament today at FFG. 6 in attendance. I knew I wanted to try something with Bren Derlin so I threw together a LS targeted strike deck. DS was tougher because a lot of pods have come out in the Endor cycle that I’ve wanted to try out so I was really torn. I wound up playing them all and the deck was quite tenacious.

Random thoughts on LS:

Core Luke clears boards. that guy is a wrecking ball. Trust Your Feelings on Bren gets the job done too.

Commando Operations negating the resolution of the fate card effects but not the resolution of the fate card itself allowing for your commandos to jump in for free is…something. Woe unto the DS player who even tries to get rid of fate cards in an edge stack.

4 Seeds of Decay is silly

A single Echoes with 4 Seeds of Decay is also silly

Crix is the man

Random thoughts on DS:

Playing a quality main every single turn is solid.

40% chance of starting the game with Jabba’s Rancor in hand is also solid.

Masterful Manipulating into Fearsome and Foul is also great.

Looping Sith Wyrms for edge is what worms were made for.

Ephont Mon is a great first turn.

Bane Malar’s a go-getter.

Abandoned Hideout does late-game work.

Administrative Detainment is a blow-out.

Surprise Feeding Frenzy on Bubo is just funny.

The Play of the Day goes to Travis P!

DS began the game with x2 Masterful Manipulation and opens with Debt Collector into Xizor commit. Pretty good.

LS began the game with Asteroid Sanctuary, Against All Odds and Planning the Rescue tucking 3 cards under a single Masterful (Guest Quarters Rescue Mission and something else)

Travis opens with a Cloud City Operative and the Mission To Save a Friend searching his deck for Falcon and Dash. He attacks with the Operative, Xizor steps up and Travis passes on edge. DS passes and kills the operative. Next he plays Rescue Mission and rips the Falcon. Sends it in on the Masterful Manipulation without captured cards and with the added blast from Against All Odds blows it up.

Travis bounces Falcon for General Airen Cracken, stands up, rips his shirt off, beats his chest and screams “RELEASE THE CRACKEN!!” attacks the Masterful Manipulation with 3 captured cards under it and blows it sky high.

There was a question regarding timing. Cracken reacted first to the objective being destroyed and Travis decided to put out the cloud city guest quarters for free. Xizor gets unlucky with his rip and pulls nothing of value.

Travis plays the Rescue Mission that he got from blowing up the objective to free Dash and sends Dash in at To Save a Friend. Bids enough to get under and between Dash’s text, Against All Odds and unopposed he blows that one up too.

GG

Kiramode would have been proud.

So what day do people play SW around here; I'd like to get into to the game and was wondering if people have a regular day I could swing by?

Tuesday night is LCG night at the event center. Star Wars has been pretty regular there especially since so many of us also play Thrones.

Our Facebook is the Minnesota Star Wars LCG group and people have been coordinating on it for other days.

Sat and Sun afternoon usually work pretty well for me to swing by FFG and play a few.

Love to have you come by!

10 people today for the first annual “Welcome Home Peter Jacobson” tournament. Since the event center closes at 6pm on Sunday we were only able to do 4 rounds of swiss but there was a clear winner! Joe went 7-0-1 winning a dial and a shadows of the empire bust of Palpatine (yay donated prize support! thanks Ryan!) Lots of people trying out various pods from GA. Lots of sith, but I also saw 4-LOM and Zuckuss winning some contested edge battles by double, some crazy Spark of Rebellion games and even Momaw Nadon!

I was so excited to play this game competitively after a nearly year-long hiatus! I was humbled and overwhelmed by not only the turn out, but also by the number of old and familiar and new and unknown faces that showed up to the EC. Mic runs a great event! I had a blast and look forward to seeing everyone again in a few weeks!

Such a fun tournament and was great meeting so many new people! Hope everyone can make it out to Level Up Games for the next Spring Kit tournament on Sunday, 6/26. MacRauri and I have been collaborating to bring more SWLCG tournaments to the Twin Cities.

All are welcome and it will be a casual/fun event.

11 people made it to the Peter Jacobson Going Away Tournament! We did 4 rounds of swiss. A lot of stuff turned to the Dark Side. Kyle turned to the DS. The entire crew of the Independence turned to the DS. Even Obi-Wan felt the lure of the DS after witnessing the power of the Death Star. Still LS managed to come out ahead for the day 23-17 even though Thrawn is apparently canon again and a pretty good card in the game!

Random thoughts on my decks:

Hallucination I Have You Now is a thing.

Same with Hallucination Heat of Battle.

Playing a Scout Trooper to shield itself and then attacking when you have double Forward Command Post can win games.

Doole is nuts.

Talon Karrde and the FX-7 Medical Droid can lock down boards.

Gamblo rips DS edge hands apart.

Echo Caverns is nuts.

Play of the Day goes to Keith!

Keith attacks with Luke with a Trust Your Feelings.

DS blocks with a storm trooper assault team and a Golan.

LS plays Search Your Feelings and takes control of the Golan

LS loses edge but bids a Stay on Target

Farlander hops into the Golan

Farlander focuses and the Golan kills the assault team

Luke goes crazy.

12 people made it to our September tournament today including Jakob who drove all the way in from North Dakota! We did 4 rounds of swiss with no cut. Prizes were Xizor promos, scum tokens and the smugglers and spies staple: Lady Luck.

Random thoughts on my decks:

Dark Lair with all the creatures from Hunters from the Jedi is a lot of card draw.

Selling people crap with Wolverine is also a lot of card of draw and a good way to control their draws.

When doing both of these things be careful not to deck yourself…

Sometimes you find Sabine a rogue squadron xwing, Hobbie and the custom paint job all by the 2nd turn. Those games you win.

Othertimes you draw 3 stay on targets 2 pilot resources and a well equipped when you need units.

I Have You Now can be a blow out.

Play of the Day

And the play of the day goes to Keith! Again!

Sowers of Dissension and a first turn Lobot lead to a very quick win for LS when paired against a DS hybrid deck.

Play of the Day goes to…. Ethan!

A well timed heat of battle by Ethan was able to take BtS Boba off the board opening things up just enough for LS to run in and Redeem the Fallen Boba Fett! Nothing like a double striking LS Boba Fett to close things up in a hurry!

With holidays approaching and the snow storm that came over the weekend we only had 3 people show up for the NYC alt art tournament. We did a round robin and it came close to a 3 way tie but I eeked out a 3rd victory to take it all.

Out of Their Element is not so great against mono decks.

Holding the force with 2 ancient monuments and jedi training is funny. Too bad the deck lacks tactics.

Blowing up 3 objectives in one turn with Kallus is an awesome feeling

Thanks for the update, Micky Mac! ;) . Looking forward to throwing my rusty talents at you again this summer when I return.

The Peter Jacobson tournaments are the best attended ones!

I suppose we could do another memorial tournament...

14 people showed up for the FFG regional including current World Champion Brad Emon! If Brad’s deck lists look a little strange there’s a reason for it: the night before hand Brad was messaging me saying he was going to make the trip to Minnesota but didn’t know what to play. I told him not to worry “I’ll bring you a sampler”. He was intrigued. I built 4 decks for each side and told Brad not to worry “I’d play any of the decks at the tournament. Some of them even beat Josh!” But if he was concerned I’d present the buffet of decks to him and let him pick which decks for me to play first, then I could choose which decks he’d be playing. He accepted. It was awesome

Shad smashed faced face with his All Out Capital Ships list all day and had some hard fought games in the cut vs Travis’ and Joe’s Force Storm list. In the end a huge fleet of ships with resupply depot will get something past an Emperor. His Force Hunters list was also disgusting and rained death on his opponents with double Power of the Dark Side spawning Terentateks with Hunters of the Jedi when Yoda left play. I was skeptical of his inclusion of a x1 Mara over Killing Cold. Twist and Ice Trompers win games! But turn 1 Mara gets the job done too and she showed up for him turn 1 frequently. A well deserved win

I narrowly missed the cut. Brad actually wound up bringing a LS deck that was bouncing around his head so I played it and he decided to put me on my Iggy Apocalypse deck. The other DS decks looked too “legit”. So I ran:

The LS deck was hilarious. It did exactly what Brad built it to do in 3 of the 4 games and that was to pressure DS to attack and when they do flash in Momaw with Last Minute Reinforcements and trigger Momaw to bring in Echo Caverns. The ability to get Echo Caverns and a defender with a black tactics as a combat trick lead to a blow out in 2 of those 3 games. Directed Fire with Yoda was also not bad.

I thought the DS deck was the weakest of the ones I had built, but it wound up being deceptively powerful. Double Hunter for Hire and 6 echoes of the force did a lot of work. Sometimes LS didn’t want to commit anybody and I wound flop multiple Derpa Droids from the Iggy Prime set and clear the board. Striking with Reserve Troopers and using echoes of the force to uncommit them, or Abandoned Hideout to move their commit card over to the next Reserve Trooper was also hilarious.

The craziest play though was against a Jedi deck that had me dead to rights after a May Ally is the Force wiping my board. I had been doing a good job of keeping his board clear and peppering up his objectives but then I lost everything and my one Reserve Trooper was triple focused. My turn I play the Chimaera and have to try to defend. He rebuilds and has a Yoda, Crow and 2 Lost Masters and is threatening game if he wins edge. Yoda attacks, I block and win edge but Yoda gets a shield and I have to focus the Crow to not lose that turn. Chimaera falls to Yoda’s 5 guns. He attacks with a Lost Master to take an objective and the turn goes back to me. I flop into Reinforcements! Get the Chimaera back from discard, it’s commited, but am able to move it’s force commit card off to a Lanik Lackey I play with abandoned hideout. Chimaera takes one objective, Lackey takes a 2nd and Tractor Beam from Chimaera to Crow lets Chimaera strike for 3 bombs to take the 3rd. Best Reinforcements! trigger ever!

All in all the day was a blast. It was a ton of fun hanging out with everybody and I look forward to seeing everyone again.

Random Thoughts on My Decks

I’d been wanting to do something with Knowledge and Defense for awhile and it seemed natural to try it in a Spark deck. My other pet project with Spark involved a bajillion Believers in the Old Ways but I like this version because of all the tactics it can generate.

In one game I got to bid a BtS Obi Wan and then bring him out post strikes to focus down DS board.

In another game I played back to back Confronting the Terror and it was everything I had hoped it would be. Kanan took on a Terentatek and with the writing all on the wall DS decided to assign the damage to his objectives and kill himself.

In another game I tried to wanted to Confront the Terror again but that frickin’ Inquisitor with his lightsaber…

DS was the deck I kept waffling back and forth on if I had the right build. Over a fair amount of mulled wine Josh Johnson and I brainstormed a deck with the 4 sith seeds of decay and figured since it had sith pilots why not throw in 4 stay on targets and try to get some Boba action going as well. Then we threw in Zekka for hard hitting brawling fighters and the Zekka deadly sight combo. The morning of I was debating cutting Zekka for either Xizor, Marek Steele, Malakili, Black Squadron Assault or even Virago. It probably should have been Xizor. In the end the deck remained the same and it was awesome.

In 2 out of the 3 games I had a turn 1 Backstabber Armed to the Teeth.

I also set off two Zekka bombs as we entered conflict with Deadly Sight. Falcon went down in flames. Boba Fett returned safely to my hand with help of Slave 1. Next turn I think I hard cast Black Squadron and had a Stay on Target ready for whatever was redeployed.

Sometimes Seeds on DS is terrible. Nothing is committed turn 1 and after a Zekka bomb nothing is committed either. Other times Seeds of Decay is backbreaking.

Recurring Black Squadron cards for edge with Black Squadron Formation is fun. Using it to bring back a Come With Me to go tutor up Backstabber is also great. Just make sure you have the 4 resources to do that trick. It does not work with 3 as I found out. Have to pay for Come With Me too.

Dark Temples and pilot resources can quickly create a huge resource base. Use Dark Temple triggers to free up for Backstabber or Deadly Sight resources to push your resource advantage even further.

Boba and Mauler Mithel on foot like closing games.

We had 6 people show up for our March casual tournament. We did 3 rounds or swiss in the new and exciting Twist of Fate format. Joe took it home with 15 points dominating the scene with his sith deck once again.

Joe and I had an epic showdown in the 3rd round. In the first game I went up against his Sith deck and did an ok job pecking away at his objectives. Ezra’s cat managed to save him from getting hit by telekinetic strike and Ezra himself ripped Joe’s force storm out of hand. Later Joe played core Palpatine and did an all out attack against my Gamor Run. Ahsoka was unable to hold the line. I lost the defensive edge battle 9-10. He blew up the objective, got his force storm back and proceeded to loop it the rest of the game.

In the 2nd game against Joe we got in a situation where my deck wanted to trade punches with his. He took 2 of my objectives and put a 3rd to 4 damage. I counter attacked, blowing up two of his, taking control of the Ghost and Hera with my mission Palpatine reaction, and putting Lure of the Dark to 4 damage. On his turn he came in for the coup de grace with Sabine, Ezra and and Children of the Force. I triggered the Emperor’s Promise to blow up the Lure of the Dark side to take control of both Sabine and Ezra. used Sabine’s ability to give DS Ezra edge 1 and the edge battle began. His only unit left on the board—under his control!—was a twi’lek child. But it won edge and won him the game. DS Specters are terrible!

Random thoughts on my decks:

they weren’t good

but some cards showed promise.

The Ezra set it better than I gave it credit for. In one game I had Stand Together and Gamor out and played first turn Kanan into Ezra. Ezra’s reaction is also better than I thought it would be.

I got the Gamblo Stolen stormtrooper helmet combo on the board once. It was ok. nice way to make them bleed cards before an edge battle without putting yourself down in the count.

Spray painted, Ahsoka’s lightsaber wielding, rebel Kyle Katarn is a pipe dream. And glorious when it happens.

For DS: Stealing units is a lot of fun. They’re almost always focused when you take control of them though so they rarely can be used as defenders right away. This is terrible

Non elite Kallus is a sad sad man.

If I win worlds again I will make a rebel Agent Kallus. Maybe he’ll be called Fulcrum, and he’ll be elite. He’ll also have the same reaction as Navy Kallus because that sounds hilarious.

We had the store championship at the FFG Event Center today. A number of regulars couldn’t make it today, but the 6 who did proved fierce competition. We did 3 rounds of swiss followed by a cut to top 4. Ethan went undefeated for the day with his LS list scoring many bullseyes. Pilot Boba was on fire for me in all my other matches, but against Ethan’s Core Han the bounty hunter was no where to be seen. I tried to push the finals to a second game and did a very awkard attack to take Along the Gamor Run off the board basically hoping Ethan wouldn’t draw into the bombs he needed. On his turn he moved a damage to my defender with Questionable Contacts, played Dash and then attacked with Luke’s Skyhopper Bullseye’ing my one defender. Took and objective and then Dash came in to one shot the other objective since I couldn’t pitch my 5 card hand. Ouch!!

Random Thoughts on My Decks

Falcon Jedi with Spark is a strong enough archetype that you can put 6 Gotals in it and the deck is fine.

If you manage the keep the force just once with Gamor, Yoda, Make Their Own Luck, all those Gotals gain access to their 2 black bombs and things can really swing.

Unwavering Resolves continues to be a super niche card. I was hoping I’d spark into something on DS first turn and then use Unwavering Resolve to keep the force and then use my 3 remaining resources to play Yoda or something. Didn’t line up for me. Tyler won a game with Unwavering Resolve on Kanan though!

Planning and Preparation turn 1 to cast a Bamboozle out of nowhere is pretty sweet!

Cathars shielding the Falcon is fun

The objective text on Self Preservation is better than the objective text on Daughter of Tanaab. For this deck at any rate.

DS pilot decks live and die by how quickly they can find Boba Fett

Playing Night Beast on foot is funny and a typical turn 1 play

Once you find Boba Fett 5 Stay on Targets will make sure he’s a very active fellow

Obsidian Leader with Black Market Exchange is a Go-Getter!

Sometimes you have to play T-7 Ion Disruptors on Academy Engineers and then sell a swoop to have them one shot an objective

Non Elite Kallus is still sad

The Play of the Day goes to….. Tyler!!

Facing the oppression of the Sith Tyler attacks, plays Jedi Mind Trick on Palpatine, brings it back with Binds All Things, plays it again on Sariss, locking out all of Joe’s tactics and then goes crazy with Soresu Trained, Lightsaber Wielding, double Trusting Her Feelings Sarenda!!

Thanks for everyone for coming out

6 people showed up today for the 2nd annual Peter Jacobson welcome home tournament. We did 3 rounds of swiss after which Ethan was the undisputed champion with 18 points. Me and two other people were tied on 3 points for 2nd place, but their strength of schedule was much stronger than mine and since they had played the exact same people they were also tied on the strength of schedule strength of schedule tie breaker!! So a true tie!

Things got close in a few games, but Ethan stomped his way to victory with the smugglers and pilot Boba. One game looked over and turn one Pulsar Skate with Pilot Han on it flew bast Navy’s only blocker to blow up 2 objectives on its own. That’s a lot of damage coming from objectives!

Random Thoughts on my Decks…

Blaster Emplacements are seriously fun.

turn one double Blaster Emplacement + Echo Caverns is control for days!

Don’t use Makeshift Repairs to tutor for your second Bo Rifle when there’s only one Bo Rifle in your deck.

Using battlefield engineers to get two uses out of echo caverns is just dirty.

Chopper is annoying, but doesn’t trigger often if you don’t pair him with Gamblo etc.

Gamor is an all star. surprise surprise!

Having 3 heat of battles in one edge battle is definitely tide turning. Especially after DS peppers everything up from the blaster emplacements.

Double Gaffi Stick wielding Tuskens raiders are as fun as they ever were.

Without Gaffi Stick the edge in x2 Hunters of the Jedi and Jundland is BAAAD

Without Web on the board, Force Lightning and Deadly Sight are just too expensive early on.

Forgetting that Terentateks punch through shields is a costly mistake.

The Emperor Favors…. HIMSELF!!

Play of the Day goes to…ME

Ethan had some cool plays with his smuggler deck going crazy. Pulsar Skate taking 2 objectives turn one, and playing Over My Dead Body to cancel Gunship Shields. After things were done Peter and Ethan played a casual game and Peter had teched specifically against the vehicle match up! Novice Starship Thief blew up a sleuth scout, Ethan did a smuggler run to steal the Pirate Hideout, but Peter countered with Niles Ferrier to steal the Lady Luck and went on to win the game. Too bad it didn’t count.

In my game vs Grahame he counter attacked with an Interdictor sucking in my Captured Courier Droid. Grahame had Early Warning System so he would get the Interdictor back on his turn anyway. I blocked. Somehow won edge and triggered a Heat of Battle. Then used Echo Caverns to steal Chopper’s black gun to get the Courier Droid up to two guns and took down the Interdictor!

Thanks for everyone who came out! We’ll do another one soon and by then the next pack should be out!
