Expansion Speculations???

While more board sections and an increased player number are probably inevitable in future expansions, given FFG's track record, I actually think both would likely be diminishing returns that add stuff for the sake of adding stuff without improving game play.

There's nothing from stopping groups from running 4-8 player games, as long as they own two copies of Outer Rim for the four extra player dashboards and starting ships. You could even double all the market decks except for the Bounty Deck and the Luxury Deck (e.g. two Vibroaxes, two Casino Heists, two YV-666s, etc. ...), and maybe even say that only one ship of each type can achieve the goal to become the unique version. The contact tokens would run out much quicker, which has positive and negative impacts on the game. Finding bounties would be much easier, but crew might become a real premium and would force people to hang out at Takodona to find crew. The big downside, though, is the game would take incredibly long, and downtime between turns would get unwieldy (can you imagine 7 players taking their turn after yours, 7 cycles and 7 purchases of the market deck, 7 patrol movements, ugh...). The game seems like it will always be best at 4 Players.

More board sections would either increase the size of the board (changing how close patrols start to the center of the board and altering how pick-up/delivery stuff is balanced) or have alternate locations to replace existing ones. A bigger board means even less opportunity for player and patrol interactions and may further benefit Han with his +2 Movement. New board sections can't simply replace old board sections in games because you'd have to somehow sift out every single planet reference in the market decks to those now-missing systems. Both seem like bad options, seemingly suggesting that the board is probably fixed as-is.

I could imagine a narrow board ring that simply goes above the current board but doesn't have any spaces players can move to, instead simply adding spaces to add new contacts (or new colors) to existing systems, thus effectively giving them 3-4 contacts. Making sure they add as new colors wouldn't dilute the existing color pools, which would make bounty hunting exceptionally hard.

Those are some good points on 4 being the maximum workable number.

If they want to expand the board, I think they'd likely do something similar to Eldritch Horror with sideboards. E.g. they could have 'planet' boards with sub locations that can be moved to instead of your normal move - this would let them implement direct benefit from sticking to a planet. Probably not for each planet, but one per board or something.

Really though, the main thing that an expansion needs to do is add player interaction. Most of the stuff like extra cards is just standard, it's going to happen. But more ways to interact with others players is something that the game really needs, IMO. That, and possibly a better end game then hitting a points total, because it often seems that there's one or two players who get a lead, and can then just find easy fame points.

More captains to play as, too many great characters to play as!
more ships to fly, because its star wars! there are far too many ships to simply be happy with the small current selection.
more NPCs to, fight, bribe, bounty, chat with, work for, ect ect. without the characters the universe is empty!
more places to go, It would be great to see more of the galaxy and fly there.
more market items, because what is better than more star wars fluff to own?
more factions, being able to fully enlist in a faction for special missions.
I just cant wait for more to be added to this game.

Expansion, please!

Do not wanna wait a year for full game experiance (hello there, Eldritch!) again. Maybe a first insight at Essen? Please reply FFG!!!

I wonder if FFG will do what they do with Eldritch Horror and 2nd edition Arkham Horror. Small box expansions with extra cards and big box expansions with extra boards or something.

Did Outer Rim come up during the AMA with Andrew Navarro? I suppose I should just buckle down and watch the whole thing start to finish. If I do that I'll come back and edit this post with an answer.

It did come up at the end, here's the summarized response. (1:17:25)

Q: Are there any plans for more Outer Rim?

A: So talk about games built to be expanded, I think we'd love to do an Outer Rim expansion. We don't have anything solid at this point, but it's definitely pretty high up on the list.

I expect there will be an expansion at some point, but it sounds like it is not currently in development.

Added time.

I love this game. I don’t get it to the table very often though, I’ve played 6 games I think. I think this game is screaming out for expansions and I’d buy any expansion in a heartbeat

Even after what he said in the AMA, there is no way they are not working on an expansion for this game. If that was true then what a huge missed opportunity.

That's too bad. This game hit it out of the park and an expansion would be eaten up by everyone.

I think first expansion will be more cards.

I guess it depends on how profitable the game is. I've only played it once so far, and really like it, but it feels like it really needs an expansion. Unfortunately, by the sound of what @joeshmoe554 quoted, it's not being worked on right now . They're probably just watching sales and seeing what they can spare game designers for.

I don’t think they have a team standing buy, waiting to see if sales numbers are good enough to cut them loose on making an expansion. More likely, all the teams are busy, and when one comes up with some spare time the next most important thing not already being worked on will be started. What was inferred, was that Outer Rim is high up on the standby list.

Of course they don't have teams 'standing by'. I imagine it's a matter of opportunity cost: which people are assigned to which projects, with higher-value projects (ie. more profitable games) being assigned more people to work on them. While I really love it, I don't think they're assigning many people to SW: Rebellion right now, because it's probably tapped out somewhat. (I hope I'm wrong about that, btw.)

I hope that your interpretation is correct, that what they say means that SW: Outer Rim is indeed high on the standby list. At the same time, the game has not been out for a long time, so they probably want to give it a little time to get out there. Then again, they might want to strike while it's hot. So, how hot is it really?

I hope they will add few new rules for pvp and maybe new parts for the map, more dangerous, a ring closer to the center. It will make this game more sandboxy instead of a race for points.

Rebellion is an excellent game and doesn't really need a further expansion. They could may release a small expansion to add in a few more cards and characters (maybe from Rebels) but it doesn't really need it.

Outer rim does need it. It is similar to another of my Fav games, Eldritch Horror. More missions, extra cards for variety, a couple more characters, and maybe a set of missions that are linked together. Player interaction could be improved but many games are similar with their minimal interaction in that respect.

The risk of FFG's business model is that many of us (myself included) are holding off on new games until a few expansions are out, given that most of the initial expansions for their games tend to 'complete' the game as opposed to expand it.

I have not purchased this because Im waiting for that 1st 'now the game has all the parts' expansion to be published. If too many are doing that, it impacts the profitability of the game and could result in no expansions at all. Tough call, I guess.

So... I've read this and other threads concerning the possiblity of expansions. Has there been any new official news ? I am currently introducing this game to several players from different gaming groups in hopes that they too buy a copy and promote the idea of expansions into production.

Not as yet. In the AMA video they said they were slowing down on expansions deciding to focus on quality rather than quantity.

I got into Outer Rim about a month ago and I've been enjoying it. I haven't been able to play with more than 2 players yet because of the pandemic and stay at home orders, but hopefully things will get back to normal soon, and I can play with more people.

I've played with every character now and was hoping for more content, so I was searching FFG's website about any news about an expansion for Outer Rim and I found this thread. Based on what I've read, there hasn't been any announcements that an Outer Rim expansion is in the works. That's too bad. Maybe they'll announce something new during GenCon.

I like @CBS Ink 's suggestion about The Mandalorian content and @AllWingsStandyingBy 's suggestions of possible new characters and ships. I think Sabine Wren and the Ghost would be my #1 choice. Hondo Onaka is another good choice. I know they're Legends now, but I'd like to see Dash Rendar, Mara Jade, and Talon Karrde.

Just saw this article while doing my semi-routine search for Outer Rim expansions:

https://www.dicebreaker.com/companies/fantasy-flight-games/news/star-wars-games-until-2024

Sounds like it's getting one in the next few years at least 😬

I watched that interview and it definitely sounded like there would eventually be an expansion:)

in a year or so

I think a Outer Rim expansion is over due.

Best have Razor Crest and the Child and Din.
