Expansion Speculations???

By CBS Ink, in Star Wars: Outer Rim

Im looking forward to the New Disney+ Mandalorian Show Expansion!

Who do you think/hope will be in the (Sure To Come) Expansions?

The easiest thing for them to add is more characters and ship.

I think the most likely additions are:

Sabine Wren / VCX-100 ( Ghost ) -- Sabine is super popular, and she's not in OR yet (unlike Hera), and the VCX will certainly appear maybe as the first > 20,000 credit ship?
Nien Nunb / Sullustan-Yacht ( Mellcrawler ) -- Iconic weapons smuggler, has his own freighter, has been heavily featured in Disney new-cannon
The Mandalorian / Mando-Gunship ( Razor Crest ) -- Pretty likely, but potentially awfully close to Boba, Sabine, and Ketsu in theme/style
Tobias Becket / Y-45 AT Hauler ( "Tobias' Ship" )
Aurra Sing
Cad Bane
Zuckuss

With less likely additions probably including:

Cassian Andor / U-Wing ( "Cassian's Ship" ) [given the Cassian Andor live-action series]
Darth Maul or Assaj Ventress / Sith Infiltrator ( Scimitar )
Dengar
/ Jumpmaster 5000 ( Punishing One ) [in games involving Dengar, could easily just remove his one yellow encounter token, since it isn't related to any bounty]
Q'ira
Enfyst Nest

Then we'll likely see more cards to add to each Market Deck, including possibly entirely new decks (e.g. maybe the "Cooperative Jobs" that the designers mentioned during the stream but noted had been dropped).

Probably more Encounter cards for each location to add more mystery.

Will probably see additional databank cards added to already existing numbers (e.g. maybe a couple more #1 cards for delivering illegal cargo, or a few more Sabacc cards).

I can't really see new board sections getting added (board is big already, and would mess with distances needed to travel for jobs and would dilute the encounter tokens making bounties harder to find). I can't really see adding new Encounter Tokens, unless there was a new color o Encounter token that was interacted with differently or that filled into spaces as they were emptied. Given the encounter tokens being tied to Bounty Cards, seems like it would be more work than it was worth messing with the starting core set encounter tokens.

Looking forward to the show as well. More characters and ships I think is very likely.

I think maybe more jobs and bounties and cargo are likely as well.

maybe even themed expansions. Surely rhere’ll Be a Mandalorian expansion based on the show?

I think new encounter tokens are a strong possibility. You could have a way to take playable characters that are not being played in your game and add them as contact tokens (especially if you're adding characters like Dengar or Hera that are playable, just swap them). You'd have to do something about playable characters that have bounties but I think it could add some fun elements to the game.

Oh, and since this is an expansion speculation thread I feel contractually obligated to mention Dash.

Dash would be SO Rad! I have hope that they will bring him in since FFG still kept Dash after X-Wing 2nd Edition.

Yea, I was also thinking we also get Maul and Maybe a new Crimson Dawn and Black Sun Patrols.

Black sun and Crimson dawn are the syndicate patrols. But I guess they could expand upon that giving them their own individual factions

Dryden Vos said that Crimson Dawn had a "Shaky Alliance" with the Pike Syndicate, so they are not the same Criminal Organization.

Black Sun was also its own Criminal Organization predominantly consisting of the Falleen Species.

Good Ol' Star Wars Explained LOL

Yup I know. In one of the rule books, it stated that Syndicate covers Crimson dawn and Black sun. It just mentions them as examples I think

Yea, I see. Good Point. Plus, I just remembered that one of the Patrol Ships is Dryden's Yacht.

I only remember cause I loved Solo so mention of Crimson dawn got me excited and I like mention of Black Sun cause I thought they weren’t ‘canon’ anymore

We are digging the game, and I am looking forward to the first expansion as a gauge for where FFG wants to go with the game.

As I've posted on this topic before, what the game needs is.....

More varied encounters/cards. Double the system encounter cards and market cards (not ships). This will give the game longevity and would come in a small box. This is also similar to the first Eldritch Horror expansion.

New encounter tokens will be added at some point as there are gaps in that particular deck.

If you want a new character - It has to be Dash and the YT2400. Cassian and the U-Wing won't be added - he's a rebel, not really part of the underworld of the outer rim. However, because of the card size of ships I would expect whatever that expansion is would see a couple of replacement board pieces or adding some form of global narrative to the game as well in a medium or large box.

An interesting addition could be personifying faction leaders with their own goals. They affect how patrols work and give out jobs to players. If so many of their jobs have been completed, all players with positive influence with that faction get some sort of reward. Similar in style to Ancient Ones in Eldritch and the factions in the Fallout board game.

The Black Sun was on the Clone Wars show, so they are Still Canon! I'm with ya, they are pretty awesome!

Has anyone mentioned Cad Bane and Aurra Sing? And more characters from Solo.

Literally the first reply... 🤣

I would love a Dash/YT-2400, but his in-canon existence is incredibly shaky at best and he comes from a 20 year EU storyline that won't move any new toys or LEGO sets for Disney. So unless he somehow makes some prominent appearances in either The Mandalorian or the yet-to-be-titled Cassian Andor series, I think he's nothing but a pipe dream. While Dash exists in X-Wing and Armada, he was added to those games before Disney took control of the LFL license. To my knowledge, Dash has not been featured in any new Star Wars properties post-Disney, such as Imperial Assault, Destiny, Legion, Hasbro Toys, Comics, etc.

While the Cassian we know from Rogue One is a through-and-through Rebel, the Cassian we get to know through his upcoming live-action series might be a bit more independent and he certainly exists as a very autonomous operative, even within the Rebel Alliance. He kills fellow Rebels to avoid them being captured, he follows secret orders not known to the rest of the Rebel command to assassinate targets, and so forth. As an undercover operative working in the Rim, Cassian probably has on more than one occasion completed jobs for the Empire and Crime Syndicates in order to gain their trust and access to their circle.

Jyn spends her entire life fighting against the Empire with Saw's Partisan Rebels and then briefly with Mothma's Rebel Cell, and yet she's in the game. The characters in Outer Rim represent rugged generally autonomous people in the Star Wars universe who have lived and worked as individuals. The game of Outer Rim gives a fun "What-If" for those characters that can tell a totally different story than what happens in canon. In our last game, Jyn Erso won by eliminating Saw and turning Hera into Thrawn -- hardly her "Rebellion's are built on hope" self from the movies.

Would Dash make more thematic sense? Heck yes. Would I rather have Dash? Heck yes. Is Cassian more likely than a 20-year-old EU Legends character? Sadly, yes.

Disney bought Star Wars in 2012.

Dash was put into X-Wing and Armada in 2015

There's plenty of room for more board sections for more planets and maybe add the Mining Guild, Mandalorians, and unexplored space factions. Having more than four players would be good too. I'm thinking multiple expansions are possible with the Star Wars galaxy.

While more board sections and an increased player number are probably inevitable in future expansions, given FFG's track record, I actually think both would likely be diminishing returns that add stuff for the sake of adding stuff without improving game play.

There's nothing from stopping groups from running 4-8 player games, as long as they own two copies of Outer Rim for the four extra player dashboards and starting ships. You could even double all the market decks except for the Bounty Deck and the Luxury Deck (e.g. two Vibroaxes, two Casino Heists, two YV-666s, etc. ...), and maybe even say that only one ship of each type can achieve the goal to become the unique version. The contact tokens would run out much quicker, which has positive and negative impacts on the game. Finding bounties would be much easier, but crew might become a real premium and would force people to hang out at Takodona to find crew. The big downside, though, is the game would take incredibly long, and downtime between turns would get unwieldy (can you imagine 7 players taking their turn after yours, 7 cycles and 7 purchases of the market deck, 7 patrol movements, ugh...). The game seems like it will always be best at 4 Players.

More board sections would either increase the size of the board (changing how close patrols start to the center of the board and altering how pick-up/delivery stuff is balanced) or have alternate locations to replace existing ones. A bigger board means even less opportunity for player and patrol interactions and may further benefit Han with his +2 Movement. New board sections can't simply replace old board sections in games because you'd have to somehow sift out every single planet reference in the market decks to those now-missing systems. Both seem like bad options, seemingly suggesting that the board is probably fixed as-is.

I could imagine a narrow board ring that simply goes above the current board but doesn't have any spaces players can move to, instead simply adding spaces to add new contacts (or new colors) to existing systems, thus effectively giving them 3-4 contacts. Making sure they add as new colors wouldn't dilute the existing color pools, which would make bounty hunting exceptionally hard.

The expanded universe was only declared non-cannon in 2014, which is when the X-Wing expansion was released. Presumably the Armada expansion was already in development.

Disney started changing the EU to legends i January 2014, and that process was complete in April 2014

https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2014/01/op-ed-disney-takes-a-chainsaw-to-the-star-wars-expanded-universe/

X-wing Wave 5 announced June 13, 2014 (Decimator, Outrider) won't release until November 26th 2014

Armada announced August 4 2014.

Armada Wave 2 Announced April 6 2015 and won't release until November 26, 2015.

Rogues and Villains doesn't even get a preview until September 30, 2015 which is when they actually featured Dash's card. That's 18 months after the total change to legends, certainly more than enough time to change the name of a card, if that card had even been developed when the Legends change happened.

Oh yeah, and they included him in X-Wing 2.0 which would have been a perfect opportunity to, ya know, not do that.

Jar Jar?
