Now Available: Paper Blossoms, a Character Generator

By AltitudeMatters, in Legend of the Five Rings: The Roleplaying Game

We're proud to present v0.2.1 - Mantis and GM Kit support! With this, we should support all currently released materials.

As bug reports have begun to taper off, we're going to be approaching a first "1.0" build. We're happy to take any and all feedback (on the github issue board, on the FFG Forums (AltitudeMatters), or by contacting us at paperblossoms.L5R@gmail.com )!

There are a number of changes to this build:

  • Support for the content of the Mantis PDF and GM Kit!
  • Corrected Kuni family skills
  • Support learning advances for half XP (per In the Palace of the Emerald Champion )
  • Added a version number and Compile Time to the About dialog

Additionally, multiple bug-fixes and code cleanup fixes were committed. In particular, the codebase was rearranged to support automated testing, variable declarations were refactored throughout the code.

Many thanks to our contributors, bug reporters, and users!

TRANSLATORS:
We've begun to add support for translation the application into other languages. While support for internationalization of the database is currently a work in progress, we've added infrastructure to support translating the main application UI. If you're interested in supporting a translation effort, you can check out an overview of the process at https://github.com/dashnine/PaperBlossoms/wiki/Translation , and reach out to us at paperblossoms.L5R@gmail.com if you have questions!

N ew release published on Github! https://github.com/dashnine/PaperBlossoms/releases

This is a minor release in support of our anticipated 1.0, but it still comes with a few oft-requested features!

In this release:

  • Added a Summary Skill/Ring sidebar to character creation
  • Improved character sheet pagination (particularly the curriculum page)
  • Shrank default (blank) boxes to fit 6 techniques on a sheet
  • Show Clan/Family skill and rings in description box during CharGen
  • Auto-populate the description box for "standing out in your school" when selecting a ring
  • Made multiple fixes to eliminate errors when saving PaperBlossoms in a read-only directory (e.g. Program Files)

New 1.0 release: https://github.com/dashnine/PaperBlossoms/releases !

Especially here on the FFG forums, we want to take a moment and thank everyone for your testing, feedback, and words of encouragement. We hope you enjoy Paper Blossoms--if you have bugs or feature requests, keep 'em coming!

Utaku Battle Maidens are getting the option of Iron in the Mountains kata, when it should be Iron Forest (I think that's the name?)

Thanks! Added an issue to the github -- should be a nice quick fix :) Fixed by meow9th this morning. You won't see it reflected until we do another release, but the fix is in!

@ AltitudeMatters , this is incredible work. Thank you very much for all your hard work :)

I was planning on translating it into spanish, but I wonder if the program is designed with the english hard coded or if it would be possible to translate without the translation getting obliterated by updates.

Thanks! 🙂

TLDR version: the UI is ready for translation, and will not wipe out translations from version to version. The Database isnt...yet.

Funny you should mention--in the last few builds we've put some work into flexibly supporting translation of the UI. Support for translating the database completely is still a work in progress, but @ruronin has been a hero and translated the UI for it into French already (folks'll see it in the next build if they have a FR locale--we're releasing a beta in the next few days)!

Translation of the UI is done using Qt's translation API. Effectively, individual phrases might lose a translation if we change the English text, but it should hang on to translations from build to build otherwise!

The database *will* get overwritten by updates, so that part isn't well-suited to translation yet. As of last night though, I checked in a "descriptions" editor dialog that should help folks that are translating for their home group fill out full description data of their choosing--the user_descriptions table can be exported and imported to save those from version to version.

I'd certainly be thrilled if you're down to translate the UI into Spanish--if you want to discuss the details, you can DM me here or ping me at paperblossoms.L5R@gmail.com!

Version 1.0.1-beta1

1.0.1-beta1 is a prerelease to test a variety of new features we're rolling out! Special thanks go out to Ruronin and Albertorius, who have provided shiny new UI translations for PaperBlossoms in French and Spanish!

Changelog (from 1.0.0):

  • User description editor, exporter, importer
  • Spanish Translation of UI (Thanks to Albertorius)
  • French Translation of UI (thanks to Ruronin!)
  • Export to XML
  • Support for forcing a locale
  • UI Enhancements (greying out items, double-click support on multiple dialogs, cleanup)
  • Corrections in data (Utaku battle maiden, etc)
  • added tests for more of the DAL
  • Suppressed some warnings for unused variables

Known Issues:

This application may be unrecognized by Windows or Mac (causing the infamous "Windows has protected your PC" error). If this occurs, you can run it anyway -- see this link for steps on Windows, and something like this link for guidance on OSX.

Side note, for those waiting: we're at the light-at-the-end-of-the-tunnel on database translation to other languages. Meow9th has wrapped up the DB changes needed for it, and I'm able to generate translation files (just CSVs, for the DB). Just going bit by bit and porting the application to handle translation. I know we're quiet--but I promise we're still coding away :)

Just dropping by to to say "Arigato Gozaimasu" for this fantastic idea, job and result !

Keep up the good work !

Awesome :)

Popping in to say here that for the forseeable future {at least until 12 June} I wont be able to do much if any beta testing on this project, but dont worry, I will still use the program and search for bugs in my current version at this time {note this is mostly due to computer and personal troubles; I will still be around here too}

By all means! Always happy to handle any bugs you find. Hope you're finding it useful so far. 😄 Thanks again!

Minor issue: If you select "Togashi Order" as your family and, for example, "Akira" as your personal name, the app lists your full name as "Togashi Order Akira". Also, they get a free "tattoo Kiho" at each class rank, including the first.

Other suggestions:

  • Maybe there should be an option to add "free advancements" that don't automatically adjust your XP spend total (e.g., Togashi tattoo kiho)?
  • A quantity field might be useful for items (e.g., rations).
  • Ability to set a default save/load folder?

Howdy--thanks for the reports!

1) That's a good point--you see something similar with the Families of the Fleet. I'm adding an issue to the board to make the Family name editable after character creation; hopefully that'll help with some of these corner cases. :)

2) We actually already have the 'free advance' in -- specifically for Togashi Tattoo Kiho, in fact (though it works for anything)! When the character is created, you should be able to go the the 'Add Advance' dialog and see an option for 'Free' at the bottom. You can fill in a reason like 'Tattoo' to set it apart in the list, too.

3) Hm -- I'll think about how that might play out, but a quantity field should be doable. I'll add an issue!

4) This is a good call -- I think it might work well with some other things I need to put into a saved-off settings file, too. Adding an issue!

Side note: Tylsar has been good enough to provide a German UI translation -- reviewing that and getting it merged in shortly!

Ah, I saw that and thought that was for "out of curriculum" purchases (half credit towards advancement). Didn't occur to me that that was calculated automatically, and that Free meant, well, Free.

😄 We try pretty hard to make it automagical as possible, as a general rule! Of course, this means that bugs can always creep in, so be sure to let me know if you see something fishy in any of the calculations!

Version 1.1.0-alpha1

Due to a massive influx of enhancements, we're doing doing alpha testing on a major release! This release has a variety of bugfixes and enhancements, but was chiefly focused on adding support for database internationalization. We currently have brave translators working on German, Spanish, and Polish database translations, and this alpha release includes a full translation into French!

While we've made efforts to test this release, the number of back-end changes are significant. We'd love some feedback and testing from adventurous users--but read this description completely!

Changelog (from 1.0.1-beta1):

  • Support DB Translation (current supported languages: French!)
  • Locale now uses settings.ini file found in the App Data Directory
  • Now remembers last save/open directory
  • Locale now saved in character files. Will not open a char file if wrong locale detected!
  • Allow editing family name after saving
  • Performance enhancements, data and code bug fixes

As noted above: starting with this release, character files will be linked to a locale-- you won't be able to load characters from a different locale . The application's database and UI locale will default to your system locale, but can afterward be adjusted by changing the values in <applicationdatadirectory>/settings.ini and restarting the application. NOTE: Database translation is an inherently fraught activity -- it is likely that there will be bugs. Please let me know about them!

Known Issues:

This application may be unrecognized by Windows or Mac (causing the infamous "Windows has protected your PC" error). If this occurs, you can run it anyway -- see this link for steps on Windows, and something like this link for guidance on OSX.

Hello there !

For French and Canadian users, do nor hesitate to tell me should you see any typo or mistake I might have overlooked on the french version.

Your friendly neighbourhood,

I’ve just started using your app, I’m a Mac user and it’s so nice to have a native option! Thank you so much for your efforts it’s truly wonderful.

Thanks--glad you're enjoying! Let us know if you find any quirks. 😄

After some feedback and testing, we have another release candidate ready to roll! This prerelease wraps up initial work on localization. As such, it includes complete UI and DB translations in French (translator: @ruronin ) Spanish (translator: @Albertorius ) and German (translator: @Tylsar ). Many, many thanks to our dedicated translator-contributors!

Reminder: This is a prerelease. Bugs may be present. If you find something not working--let us know! As always, if you have custom descriptions, be sure to export them before updating, and re-import them when you launch the new application.

Changelog (from 1.1.0-alpha1):

  • Updates to FR UI localisation and DB
  • New: German DB
  • New: Spanish DB
  • Bugfix: newlines now render in notes and descriptions on character sheets!
  • Added developer tools to aid in creating new localisations

As with the prior alpha, character files will be linked to a locale-- you won't be able to load characters from a different locale . The application's database and UI locale will default to your system locale, but can afterward be adjusted by changing the values in <applicationdatadirectory>/settings.ini and restarting the application. That's great :)

I've found some small fixes already (>_>) so I'll upload an updated csv to the repository ASAP.

While fiddling with the program to check out translation errors, I've thought about a couple of possible improvements that might be interesting to add:

  • Free text option for Advantages/Disadvantages (Part 4: Strengths and Weaknesses): Seeing as you can create your own, it would be nice to be able to add free text there for custom distinctions, adversities, passions and anxieties.
  • Related to that one, it would be very cool to be able to add custom Advantages/disadvantages after chargen.
  • Also related: Is there a way to add full new custom equipment? Apart from modding already existing one I mean.
  • Lastly, how about NPC creation? That would be very cool to add, particularly with templates and with the ability to print multiples in a single page, or maybe as cards or something...

Anyways, just throwing out ideas there ^_^

1) Awesome! Be sure to regenerate the CSV from tonight's release (or pull from the repo) since I've made a number of encoding fixes! 😄

2/3) I can definitely add a feature for this. There *is* support for adding custom values via the user_advantages_disadvantages table (and they can be added after character creation, too)--any custom values there can be imported and exported in the Tools Menu...but I could see adding a feature to make that easier. I'll put it on the board!

4) Equipment is really just pulling the pre-existing values as templates to populate the boxes -- the custom gear is added directly to the character file when the user accepts the values they populate those fields with. If someone wanted to permanently add a new piece of gear, that'd be done via the user_* tables again(user_weapons and user_weapon_qualities, for instance). That said, there are long-term plans to make a data editor that would make a lot of this easier...but it's a big feature. :)

5) NPC creation is definitely something I'd love to get rolled in (though it's basically a new application). Like the data editor, it's a big feature--and in this case, I've seen a few resources that can help fill the gap in the meeeeeanwhile (***Warning: I'm not affiliated with either of these. YMMV:*** https://www.dojocreativedesign.com/l5r-roleplaying and https://github.com/polepage/L5R_NPCTool ).

I'll put a few features on the board for these--if there are any C++/Qt developers interested in working on something, shoot me a line!
