Terrinoth Bestiary

By Justindoodler, in Realms of Terrinoth

I don't own any other Terrinoth products (Descent etc), but obviously the creatures listed in ROT are just the major ones. I thought, for those of you you have more knowledge of the setting might want to help compile a list of the missing creatures and their source. Hopefully, at some point in the future, we will get a full Bestiary from ffg....

It's funny how the thinking about a bestiary seems to go in the comments section.

  1. We need more beasties!
  2. You don't need more official beasties, you can just extrapolate because "it's so easy with Genesys!"
  3. Hurray! Terrinoth has a bunch of beasties!
  4. We need more Terrinoth beasties!
  5. You don't need more official Terrinoth beasties, you can just extrapolate because "it's so easy with Genesys especially with all the existing Terrinoth beasties!"

I'd like to move to step 6 ("Hurray! We have an actual Terrinoth Bestiary!") sooner rather than later, however easy building creatures might be. ****, even better than a beastiary, format them as cards right out of the gate.

All that said, a community Terrinoth bestiary based on the existing Runebound stuff would be freakin' awesome.

A similar topic was discussed a while back

But i newer think the project got off. Would be fun to do a community project i enjoyed the few i did on this board using the description from the card game. But i know not much about Terrinoth :) just use the book for the added stuff and beast off course. So if anyone is game would be happy to help crunch out a few statblocks.

I am sure the corebook has plenty to cover most adventures, but I am interested in the things that exist within the Lore. I wouldn't necessary require anyone to create rules for them (I hope a bestiary will be created in time), but it would be good to pepper npcs conversations with other creatures or foes.

Lol! This.

There are a couple of community-created resources already:

The Genesys Creature Catalogue is good. Haven't looked at it in a while. But I think many folks in love with the Runebound/Terrinoth setting want a more far-reaching setting-specific bestiary than what we have now. The Adversaries Anthology is great for collecting everything that's already official, but for the most part "everything" is only two books anyway at this point, and a lot of gaps where the various Terrinoth cardboard & miniatures games have featured creatures for which we don't have discrete stats. Finding a curated repository for homebrewed efforts at doing so would be much appreciated. I don't have time to offer my own services in building one, so I can't fairly bemoan the absence too much.

I got Hero's of Terrinoth because A) it looked fun (me and my group enjoyed the first game) and B) to add more Terrinoth NPC's/Story ideas to my adventures. I have identified 7 unique named NPC's (Splig is the 8th), 13 unique to semi-unique NPC's and 12 named Hero's for pre-generated characters. I am working on what I can for a conversion to Genesys for my personal games. If anyone else is working on it let me know and maybe we can talk about it on the Discord channel.

I dont know about the heroes but i started doing a few of the monsters that was pointed out in another thread that was not in the ROT source book. I did find that alot of stat entries are kinda the same. Like Wraith and Banshee or bersker Blood harvester you wouldent really tell the difference.

Anyways here is the first i did if someone needs a huge spider :)

Arachyura.JPG

Fixed some minor errors (like my rivals having strain :P) and decided to do a actual document. Let me know if something is wacky and if you feel like making a monster not cowered yet send me some stats and ill add it. Big thanks to the guys that made the Adversary Anthology makes making your own stuff much easier.

Im using the original list made by @geki for the index and just doing the ones not covered by other sources.

Uploaded a new version now contains

  • Arachyura
  • Blood Ape
  • Bone Horror
  • Broodwalker/Broodwalker swarm
  • Carrion Drake
  • Cave Spider
  • Dark Minotaur
  • Dark Priest
  • Demon Lord
  • Doombringer
  • Ettin

Still need a bit lore help with the Barrow Wyrm maybe @Watercolour Dragon knows what this creature is ? Also having trouble finding lore for Demolonist and Dwarven Gaurdian if they are just variants of Dwarf NPC im not going to do them just sticking with monsters :) Though i did add the dark priest which is kinda just a regular human.

Indeed. I have some of these miniatures to add to my options. A few ideas gm's could play with:

Barrow Wyrm:

Plague-breather, flyer but see * , undead creature

Undead dragons made from dead dragons! (maybe there need to be dead dragons first and an entity to roll to make them)

Harvest: Steal the knowledge of their victims, great plot development potential (or what if the heroes had one on-side and an enemy whose knowledge they wanted to tap into...) - intelligent and knowledgeable and get more so if they kill smart targets

Plague weakens victims and reduces movement etc

Enjoy the pain they inflict- maybe get a boost from it

* You may wish to give the dragon some past its best before date limits- maybe its flying is imperfect as its wings are a bit damaged, that kind of 'revived dead things' stuff!

In Battlelore they're a melee unit-perhaps they can't breathe fire anymore and can only fight at closer ranges (plague breath is more like normal breath range-wise)

You could work with the plaguelands idea with their description- they can make the very terrain around them 'unwell'

"The soaring Barrow Wyrm breathes plague, and with a icon-stars-black.png result can infect either its target or an adjacent enemy unit. These shrewd beasts are created from the husks of dead dragons to fight in the Undead army, and they do so quite happily, relishing the pain they inflict on their enemies and reaping the lore of those they have slain."

from here with an image and the card https://www.fantasyflightgames.com/en/news/2015/8/14/heralds-of-doom/

I think they look strangely beautiful, I have a weird sense of visual appeal - clearly either I'm kind in judgment or a bit off normal but I'd want to pet one. Don't think I'd survive long in a real Mennara! :)

You may wish to add some of the plaguey flavour (yum yum) of these two too http://descent2e.wikia.com/wiki/Carrion_Drake

http://descent2e.wikia.com/wiki/Plague_Worm

Talking of plague and broodwalkers I'm working on a cunning idea for my campaign where some things like carrion worms, plague worms and broodwalkers/ the related bugs are actually different parts of the same main parasitic superorganism creature's (Carrion Worm) life-cycle. Having some fun working on that! A broodwalker is therefore a host for lots of future carrion worms and will eventually become one, I feel their pain - still fleshing this out (pun intended) but the logic of it's working so far. You do not want to be bitten by a corpse bug or have a carrion worm infest you with them, or suffer any of the other unpleasant ways they can get inside you. The idea could get very ewwy!: maggots/larvae, pupae, eggs... Beware in a Mennara game if your GM starts describing your eating a meal in great detail, remembering that moment in Alien! Have toyed with some options like Volucrix Reavers being bugs that don't find a host going on to create food and decaying corpses for the others but I've not finalised things yet.

Thanks for the input @Watercolour Dragon Did a take on the Barrow Wyrm. I allready did the Carrion Drake you can see them both in the link.

https://drive.google.com/file/d/1jFquSzJMrJPCnY19eSIWrjHNBv40xc2j/view?usp=sharing

The eating of knowledge would be messy in a statblock but good to know if someone actually uses this beast. Same with the not so good flying. I modified the ancient dragon from ROT for this and added some unique spells and abilities to it. Greatly appreciate the input on the lore. Love doing these monsters but i dont know much about them. Also did the broodwalker and added a broodwalker swarm bursting from the broodwalker if they are defeated. I like your Alien reference would be a cool module start. Your a banquet or feast and eating a delicious meal. Suddenly the guest around you start sprouting worms from the inside turing into broodwalkers. Its a race against time to solve the mystery before your own body turns against you.

Ill put the monsters here as well. In case the link dont work. Let me know if it matches the lore.

carrion.JPG

Great work, I like that some of the skills you've given the barrow wyrm suggest it having perhaps taken wisdom from its victims. The flavor you've given it really works too - shows how adversaries tailored to particular entities can have their own unique aspects to bring to a game- some like this one would be a lot of fun to play with, plenty of ideas to drive the narrative options such as if the players end up having to help sick citizens through the plaguelands effect!

Death and decay features a lot in my campaign (unsurprisingly for Mennara) so I shall have to put one of these in somewhere based on your take. I'm even thinking it's quite a powerful beastie so what if one of them were only on its own side- the power to bind it to the undead legions having not quite worked enough on this occasion- thus leading to it turning on who/whatever created it as well as the heroes and anyone/anything else unlucky enough to get in its way or oppose it.

Not sure if this will be useful for those looking for fluff and lore to base their creatures on but there is a Descent 2 Wiki that has stats and write-ups for all monsters available in the game here http://descent2e.wikia.com/wiki/Descent:_Journeys_in_the_Dark_(Second_Edition)_Wiki

Its a cool wiki i have been using that for inspiration 😀 and text for describtions.

I should have known you'd already be on top of it with your in depth write ups 😊

  • Ettin (special thanks to @Direach for inspiration from the creature cataloge)
  • Fire Imps
  • Flesh Moulder
  • Harpy
  • Hellhound
  • Lava Beetle

Any feedback stat or lore wise is welcome. Ill try and clean up the layout later for now im just crunching stats.

Yikes seems like every other monster in Terrinoth uses magic of some kind spending more time making up spells then actual creature stats :)

@Watercolour Dragon or any other do you know if the Naga http://descent2e.wikia.com/wiki/Naga is supposed to be a actual magic user or just a result of magic energies ? I am inclined to make it a rival for more versatile use but if its to power any traditional sorcery i kinda need nemesis level for strain usage.

Added a few more monsters to including the Plague Worm you asked about earlier.

Edited by Archellus

Yup, magic's kinda a big thing in Mennara (it almost seems like the physics of Mennara it's that big a thing in the lore - the Verto Magica is "the inherent turning of the world" and the source of all arcane energy) so magic's a sort of power/ lifeforce or/and base material even that runs deep in Mennara's veins.

Other players from my experience have differed in how they've interpreted nagas so you may wish to leave this ambiguity in as an inspiration for GM's- some see them as a sorcerer/ess in snake form, others as a snakelike creature with magical ability or that kind of creature created or summoned by a magic user, all these kinds of interpretations work for the flavor of them.

In Descent terms they are somehow born of magic (and thus often attracted to seeking out sorcery users- they may be very interested in any such pc's or npc's, probably for bad reasons) but are certainly able to use it also having magical spells at their disposal. So to that question a clear both. The most powerful have implied strong leadership (and perhaps associated charm/coercion/manipulation/control etc abilities) and can lead other monsters (or adversaries if GM's so wish) in battle. Their human-like faces suggest also that they are somehow some sort of sorcerer-snake, but for RPG purposes the explanations for this are open (and I'm not sure the lore explains this human-like face explicitly- if anyone knows please comment here! However the mistress of serpents in 1e descent is stated as humanoid, eldritch or beast upgradable so also suggesting non-explicity that there can maybe be different 'flavours' and possible origins of naga- like I say would be good to know others' thoughts on this, will try and remember to ask in Descent forum after posting!)

Asked here: https://community.fantasyflightgames.com/topic/288868-on-naga/

The two Descent versions:

http://descent2e.wikia.com/wiki/Naga

http://www.descentinthedark.com/_n_/nagas.php

and their abilities (see also mesmerism below) which may give you some ideas:

Sorcery (2e) http://descent2e.wikia.com/wiki/Sorcery

Poison (2e) http://descent2e.wikia.com/wiki/Poison

Constrict (2e) http://descent2e.wikia.com/wiki/Constrict

Grapple (1e version) http://www.descentinthedark.com/_g_/grapple.php

Sorcery (1e version) http://www.descentinthedark.com/_s_/sorcery.php

Command (1e version) http://www.descentinthedark.com/_c_/command.php

They also lend their kind well to different levels of adversary- might be worth doing a distinct nemesis level version based on this character as there's a specific nemesis character in the first Descent version 'The Mistress of Serpents' which is basically a boss-level naga, I'm using this for a kind of snakey-served adversary with lots of snakey entities such as medusae as her followers/do-badders. Note the additional and usefully interesting mesmerism skill: http://www.descentinthedark.com/_m_/mistress_of_serpents.php

I also looked at the following to think up my initial snakey/ naga ideas so these may give you some other thoughts and perhaps inspire different variants of naga including from D&D's take on them:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Naga_(Dungeons_%26_Dragons)

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nāga

I was even considering Ankaur Maro's mount being a bone horror naga in my setting, an intimidating living mass of bone and death magic energy summoned to unlife by Ankaur himself, which I'm guessing is very akin to the bone naga mentioned in the D&D article:

https://www.fantasyflightgames.com/en/news/2017/5/15/flesh-blood-and-bone/

Have asked Descent peeps now

Thanks for the input @Watercolour Dragon Naga was a though one also medusa and Harpy. Those are iconic fantasy d&d style monsters seemed to work a bit different in Terrinoth from the description. i did not want the naga to become a nemesis on its own think rival level suits it more can be a nasty challenge. i had several iterations of the constrict ability. At first i had it as a weapon attack with its tail just letting the Ensnare quality represent it. Direach in his creature catalouge has a constrict ability i thought worked well with a few tweaks so tried that out. I did Mistress of Serpents. Might redo it just for format issues want to keep it one page and there is a lot of redundant information between the 2 stat blocks. For the Mistress of the serpent i had to tweak constrict or she would pass out from strain if constricting and casting spells at the same time :)

Would love some feedback on it. Also working from the original list for the creatures not present in the terrinoth book i found several that where covered in other rules. Like rat swarm could just use the scorpion swarm from ROT.

Anyways there is a note in the index "River watch Riders (BL) Not present, and different enough from
Baronial Knight." - My google fu only brings me some card images of knights how are they different from Baronial Knights ?

Also what is a Roc warrior ? a Roc is in fantasy usually a big bird. Is this a warrior on top of a big bird or the big bird it self ?

Where references are to pages in Realms of Terrinoth (ROT) these can be 1 or 2 pages out- searched the digital copy which for the pages shown in the pdf viewer is slightly out- think they added or missed a filler page in the pdf- so putting these numbers into the viewer should bring up the page, I've named the section to help you find it. Searching for rocs was fun: lots of rocks and proclaimeds and....

Riverwatch Riders: Riverwatch is one word as it's a placename:

ROT- pool the info from these mentions:

44 The Rise of the Free Cities

53 War of Ten Brothers

138 Southern Terrinoth

150 (Free Cities) Riverwatch has the most useful info on these defensive garrison cavalry soldiers who also act as messengers providing vital communications be it in times of peace or conflict. Skilled in horsemanship and sword fighting so not exactly the same as Baronial Knights (page 151 ROT) who have different skills/weapons including lances a bit like jousting knights have in some cases. I'd give Riverwatch Riders just a shield and sword (and maybe a small concealed weapon like a dagger if you feel that fits for flavour)- you can probably adapt baronial knight to fit the riders' unique specifics.

Battlelore: BT01_Card_UnitRef-08.png

and in this article which also covers the rocs and has a roc warrior image: https://www.fantasyflightgames.com/en/news/2013/12/3/lead-the-charge/

The image in this Battlelore Command article is quite a good visual cue and the text has some extra info such as the fact the riders sometimes act as support to Citadel Guards and Yeoman Archers and that " Their horses are fearless in battle , ready to gallop through a rain of poisoned arrows or stand firm in the face of hellish and hungry demons. " so perhaps make it difficult for the horses to be unnerved :

https://www.fantasyflightgames.com/en/news/2014/10/9/the-defenders-of-terrinoth/

The same article also goes on to help answer your roc warrior question: " The most powerful units of the Daqan army are the Roc Warriors from the mountainous regions in the north. For centuries, the clans dwelling in the crags have bred giant birds of prey known as Rocs and matched them with brave fighters in life-long bonds, so that the human and bird act together in battle. ..." Not much to go on for the rider- gm's could probably custom this as needed for if the rider brings anything to the mix. But you could make a default for the rider and mount based on other rider / mount combos.

And on the rocs (hehe):

You may wish to think about some of the sharp skills of birds of prey to adapt Flying Mount to a specific Roc and rider combo, birds of prey are amazing creatures and quite mindblowing- in a demo once I volunteered to have one fly over my head and it went what felt like impossibly close to the top of my head without making impactful contact- I just felt the gentle brush of its talons even with it flying over at some speed- and they showed how good they are at diving for prey too- so their flying and swooping fine judgement is quite something. Some good documentary footage on YouTube - this one (not for anyone who likes small animals, poor things) might give you some prompts/ideas (remember rocs are big so even more lethal- they could grab a human like it were a rodent probably). Certainly think about the sight- that eagle spotting that fish under the water and waves, actually hard to get your head round how good their sight is! 4 to 7 times better than ours potentially.
