It's FRIDAY!!!!! Who will we see spoiled today??

By FSD, in Star Wars: Imperial Assault

App confirmed, I know we wanted it announced but honestly at least this can FINALLY shut everyone up who is trying to say FFG can't make an IA app. You have it from their mouth, its real, its made, its being play tested. I am still guessing it is a Christmas release and that is what they are aiming for and why they staggered the box releases from the 'norm'.

Guys, get more excited about this! Until now we've had to dig up fleeting mentions of the app as proof, now we have actual live confirmation that it is IN PLAY TESTING. Not development, not just trying to battle legal crap like everyone who has no idea what they are talking about says, its in play testing. With software, while it is difficult, the release is immediate. No wait for print, when its ready it comes NOW. So it is very realistic to see it out in the next few months. Get excited guys!! Were so close and are 100% shut the haters up confirmed!!

"The app is very complicated, I spent some time working in the digital department and one thing I learned is software development is time consuming. We have a pretty big team on it, we're working hard on it and getting it as done as soon as possible."

What can we do to help? "Pray."

Where are all the negative nancies now!?!?? Crawl back to your caves trolls, we have finally shut you up.

Haha! First question of the Q&A:

"Is there anything we can do as a fanbase to make the app for Imperial Assault come out faster?"

So what does Star Wars Legions means for IA?

I hate to be the negative voice here, but all I got out of that was:

IA has an app coming (just like we did as a send off for Descent)

Check out Legions! It's just like IA, but different or something.

IA was fun while it lasted...

This all makes me very sad.

I sort of wonder if they are planning to move IA into the direction of campaign while Legion would start to replace Skirmish. Probably easier to develop and would add more $$ in sales (two product lines) but does split the community.

Might hurt our ability to bring in miniatures players, might hurt our existing player base.

With the IA app coming out I don't think that FFG is worried about sales for IA though... they are going to sky rocket.

For Skirmish? It might not have an immediate impact, but might put the writing on the wall ala Destiny did for the LCG.

I think he said Legion figures would be 34 mm "tall" any idea what IA figures are?

This is an optimistic post, so please skip if you feel the need to be devoid of hope!

I am a software engineer, and can certainly attest to development being "time consuming". Also if we look at the descent app engine being "version 1.0", its only natural in software to learn from the shortcomings in the original version and look to improve it for version 2.0 (while adding features and capabilities that were cut in the 1.0 release). My guess is part of the reason they put out a release date of 2017 originally (knowing it was a year plus out from the "announcement") - was that they didn't want to just release "Descent App for IA". They wanted to expand on it, and really make it as feature rich and compelling as possible.

So, join me in the Alt-Hope Movement - there are plenty of good seats still available on this bandwagon!!

With respect, I really don't get the negativity. We have complete and unambiguous confirmation that the app that everyone's been worried about is for sure coming out soon. We've got a new big-box expansion yet to be released, and no indication that that's the end of anything. He even mentioned in the report that Descent has something new on the horizon, so it's not like that app can even be considered a "send-off" for that game.

The only possible negative that I can see is that Legion might hurt the skirmish side, but I'm not even convinced of that. Other than the fact that it's played with plastic miniatures, IA isn't really what you would consider a traditional "miniatures game", like it seems Legion will be. People who are miniatures gamers were probably already playing other miniatures games instead. People who are miniatures gamers and also big Star Wars fans were probably playing X-Wing.

Now don't get me wrong, I'm sure that there will be people who leave IA for this new game, just like there were people who presumably left for Destiny or something else. But I don't see the cross-over being big enough to be able to declare "skirmish is dead" just because there are some other plastic figurines of a similar scale.

Agreed, based on what they said Legion sounds like it might have more in common with X-Wing. Just the fact that it will use range rulers is a huge difference from Imperial Assault. The other possibility is that it will be the Legion will be to IA as Armada is to X-Wing, it is large scale ground combat after all.

Someone asked Andrew if there was going to be new content for descent and he said that something is coming out relatively soon and to watch the website

NOTHING

Not gonna lie, kind of a disappointing day.

No significant IA news, and an announcement for what is likely to be a competing and shiny new product. Not good at all.

At least they confirmed the app is still being worked on. That's pretty big news for a lot of people in the IA community.

I was a little surprised that they didn't even mention HotE. I mean, they did flash a picture of the SW Rebellion expansion which was announced around the same time. Maybe my picture just froze up at that time?

That's true, and I am excited for the App. It's just, I thought we might get more news than "we're still working on it". Like, even just an estimated release date would be nice.

I wonder if it's going to be a 3rd Edition. It seems a little quick though. It was seven years between 1 and 2, now it's been five years since 2.

IA is doing just fine. We already heard at worlds from Todd that they're still working a year out, which means there's no plans to kill it off.

On the topic of development, Legion is probably a good year into its development too already which means it literally has nothing to do with the state of Imperial Assault as far as a "conspiracy" of FFG wanting to replace IA and shut it down. Will it poach some IA players? Sure, lots of FFG Star Wars products poach from each other and divide the player base or dilute it.

But I know these two games sure do look completely different in style and feel, even sharing the similar but not the same size of miniatures. Will I enjoy playing Legion with some friends who get it? Yeah probably a lot! But I'm not going to go hung ho on it.

Will it be anything like competitive IA skirmish? Probably not at all. If it plays like armada for squad combat it's gonna have a longer time limit, lots more going on, and just be a way different game. And there's plenty of room for them to coexist. IA is way tighter, grid based, objective based, you know what you're getting and where your guys will end up. I like those aspects and more about IA - they're a huge reason I got out of xwing and jumped into IA - along with the campaign elements.

I feel like every post in the thread needs to have an auto-post immediately after that says "Todd said they're still working a year out, which means there's no plans to kill it off".

Officilly we have no real news for IA at gencon 2017... Sadly

Sure we did, we got the news that FFG is going to cannibalize the IA skirmish playerbase by releasing a rival system. From this point on each new player will have to choose between two similar games and each FLGS will have to choose which game to push (pushing both would make little sense).

Well, they could push IA for campaign and Legion for Skirmish. But yeah, this blows.

With only so much shelf space available you would have to reduce IA stock in order to fit in legion, IA will probably get pushed as a solo\cooperative game once the app is released but that's not likely to get people playing in store. Besides once you push the casual nature of IA players could just buy legion figures and download the cards.

If I were FFG, I'd drop some new IA news right about now to keep us from dwelling on Legion.

I do wonder if FFG anticipated this rather split response to Legion from IA fans.

edit: Also, it's been almost a month (7/26) since our last HotE news- and more regrettably, no significant news at GenCon. I'd say we should be getting something soon, but even a month seems like a short amount of time to worry about at this point.

edit, edit: Man, sorry about being a pessimistic grump this morning.
