So...what will be today's article?
I've no idea - except it won't be Armada.

Or moah RUNEWARS!!
There is going to be a L5R article sometime this week, so I'll take the Crane clan preview for L5R.

In their defense it does look cool

I felt the same at first, and seriously considered buying in.
Now, I've gotten so tired of hearing about it constantly that I want nothing to do with it.
Between that and the avalanche of LCG announcement and preview articles we constantly get, its understandable why people are grumpy that we can't get two measly articles for Wave 6.

I pretty much have to get into it, since my son seems to be enthralled, and spending time with him is more important than having cash ![]()
My current worry about the Runewars game? It just came out and they have 17 expansions in line. (Armada has 22 TOTAL) omg there goes my money.
Also, the predictor2000 says.....Netrunner today. (It is always wrong though)
If you guys buy into Rune Wars, then you can be excited since a game you play got an article. And then when Armada gets an article, you can be even more excited. Just buy all FFGs products. You'll never be sad.

This guy gets it. I actually jumped into Runewars and really like it, but watching World's and the Store Championship season is getting me all excited for Armada again. Just take all my money FFG!
I do share CN's concerns about the pace of expansions, but I think for a fantasy rank and file miniatures game they need to expand quickly. I'm just really struggling trying to paint everything I want to field!

Heroine will be cheaper... and you'll never be sad again!

It really hard for me to be excited for RuneWars given how subpar the miniatures are compared other comparable games.
Granted I'm coming for Infinity and the old school confrontation days where the miniatures themselves will blow you away with their quality.
I honestly thought runewars was preprinted the first time I saw it and was shocked when they posted their "how to paint runewars" which should of been titled "now you too can paint as terribly as us!". Maybe a bit harsh, but as company don't you want your miniatures to be the best that they can be? Just odd to use the "dip" method for the miniatures that will be advertising your product.
Edited by PartyPotatoI think Armada and Rune Wars are vastly different in terms of expansions because there are only 2 factions in Armada, and at least 3? in Rune Wars. And you only need to buy into 1 faction for Rune Wars. I do think Rune Wars will be more expensive than Armada though. I compared prices and point costs, and to run an ISD, it's over 25% of your points. But to run the most expensive pack from Rune Wars, it is like 10% for a single tray and you pay less pints the more you get. To run 25% of the Rune Golems, you need to buy 2 packs which is $70 compared to the $50 for an ISD.

But price wise it's WAY cheaper than other games

Which is nice but still a miss for me. But I always approached these types of games where you have to assemble and paint the miniatures as just as much of a hobby as a game. And in order for me to put in the time and money to paint miniatures as it does take a very long time and is an significant time investment I want good looking models.
I guess FFG is assuming that their tartget demographic doesnt want to paint their miniatures? Just seems like a string of odd business/customer assumptions to be making.
The Honest Answer? Yes.
They did their Market Research - the number one complaint that miniature Wargames get, is the Cost involved....
Second, is the time it takes to prepare it.
So really, they made a compromise based on those first two market points. We got a "massed battle" game that's cheap, but has fewer models and is quicker to prepare...
I wonder how long it will be until they release a Star Wars version?
Or even just a mass troop option for IA?

Probably never...
They (at least at the moment) can't.
Basically, they're not licensed to, effectively... Its also why they can't actually sell Imperial Assault in their own online store (its always "out of stock"), and that's to do with the licensing arrangement between Disney, FFG, and Hasbro, in the United States....
IA is a Compromise. It can't be too miniature game, and it can't be too Board game... It has to remain in that sweet spot, or they lose the license to that side of things.

It is Wrong.

Fair enough. I can think of several companies that made the same assumption and are now out of business. But the difference being they started off with gorgeous models and then assumed people wanted cheaper prepainted models. Whoops they're no long around.
So hopefully RuneWars starting off as a lower quality yet cheaper alternative to other fantasy games that shall go unnamed pans out.
But from my experience it usually doesn't end well. people will pay a premium for high quality drugs miniatures... but lower quality stuff usually gets passed over.

The other side there is that this still matches FFGs own business plan, and design capabilities. No new production requirement, materials components based on what they already have, as well as matching their sculptor aesthetic.
The other side is, it still needed to match their proprietor art for Runebound... Go "Too serious", and you run the potential to alienate what current players and supporters you have...
Its a very fine line, and in any case, its a very big gamble for them... Bigger gamble than Destiny, as the margin of payoff is smaller... Destiny was a huge gamble as well, but its payoff is massive.
It will be interesting to see how it pans out... The only problem I really see with it, is it seems "rushed" in the fact that they threw up a 2 player starter, then relentlessly pounded everyone with those pieces individually, while promising four primary factions, and then only (so far) showing one of the other two....
They're trying to avoid flooding the market with massive waves at once - let people escalate into the brand new game...... But no matter what you do, you're always catering to one group, and alienating another.
Personally, I just wish it would pick up in popularily locally, so I can set a price to paint it.

The first pack of squads are lower quality than the second pack IMO. The Z-95 and Decimator look very nice. It would appear they are improving quality.
We got our first locked thread in a while. It's kind of like news, I guess...
Personally glad that one's done...
... I mean, vitriolic is one thing... But pointlessly so is another...

I guess I should clarify that all my comments about quality of miniatures is directed at RuneWar.
RuneWar seems to be directed at taking market share from large specific incumbents who initially alienated pretty much their entire player base while armada seems to be operating in a much more fragmented space.
I've been pleasantly surprised at the quality of the Armada components and they've only gotten better with time.
I totally agree with @Drasnighta that this is a huge gamble for FFG.
