Monster Cards Project

By Wario, in General Discussion

Hello!

Zombie, Skeleton, Warlock, Witch and Ghost monster card sample pictures uploaded in list. Some more will follow soon.

I have sleeved all my monster cubes with token sleeves ( found link somwhere around community )

Must admit monster cubes looks beter than ever. It feels if as optical ilusion have made monster cube picture bit bigger. Also more cearless spawning.

I cut off each sleeve envelope closing (round) part (in half) so that cut goes on bottom of border of stats, before special ability description. Took me hours, but looks fantastic.

Wario, using text from another source might be a great idea. It would save a lot of time.

Loving your choices of artwork.

That Deep One artwork is really scary. Well chosen but i don't think that a monster token can fit all that.

These cards are absolutely fantastic ! Mindblowing art, real dark and threathening ! A stunning job you've done. I'm really looking forward to using them in the game. I could go on praising all the aspects but I think you get it that I like 'em very much. :) So please allow me to bring up two points which I like less : first, I really miss the green 'upon spawning' icon from the tokens, and second, personally, I'd prefer having no leading 'keywords' to the monster's name. For example, the Hound of Tindalos' name was to long to have one and that's how I like it. :) I'm also very happy to see you'll be adding Lovecraft quotes. That'll make the feeling complete.

Any which way they'll turn out, they'll be great. Thank you !!

Hello all!

Good news, project is running right way. Twenty one monster card sample pictures uploaded already!

Goat spawn art is bit contraversional from monster shoown in other products, but i could not settle with "tailed girl".

After long search chosen picture was most effective by its abnormality. Must admit it is 3d art.

Star spawn sample pic uploaded ( with horrible "Alpha" grammar mistake )

Hey Cimitri thanks for comment!

What do you mean with ...?

don't think that a monster token can fit all that.

This project is about making monster "cards" as bonus supplement or alternative to monster "tokens". Hope you will like it in the end :)

Edited by Wario

Ohhh..To be honest, i didn't read the "cards" at the end of the topic name. Silly me.So these are a plus besides the token. I was thinking that you wanted to replace the small tokens with a bigger token. I like them already. :)

As a variation this card project can be transformed in size and printed as "small cards" (assets, conditions etc.) Small monster cards will be just bit bigger than actual monster token and can fit any place on map.

I tested monster tokens again and again (just by playing EH :) ) ... my conclusion is :

Monster token disadvantage is moment when you flip it to solve Combat encounter. At this step there is only stats and process is pure math + rolling dice. Monster image is gone from your mind,

instead there is nummbers and you bearly remember wich monster it was.

If to use "Small monster cards" instead of monster tokens you will always see monster and will disconnect with it only after its defeat, when it goes back to monster pool.

I see where you're going and you're completely right. Not that i played one game i just came to realise that i don't remember how the shoggoth looks like or that **** cthonian. This would be a great addon.

Hello all!

I'm away for a week.

Have pictures for Shoggoth and Wight, but dont have any pictures for Riot and Maniack monster cards.

Can anyone help to find good Riot picture please ?

Arkhan69 : i will remember your advice. Maybe keywords disrupt streamline and discarding them will save me from lot of trouble :)

Hello! I'm back!

Good news: i was lucky to run across some riot and maniac illustrations. Wraith monster card sample pic uploaded in list.

Here is three variations of Shoggoth monster card pictures.

At the moment in game there is three Shoggoth monster tokens -

a) Shoggoth, b) Proto-Shoggoth and c) Rampaging Shoggoth. Please judge witch pictures is appropriate under those titles (especialy wich should be generic Shoggoth).

Great artwork for the Shoggoth ! I'd rank the top picture as the prime candidate for the 'generic' title. After that : Rampaging Shoggoth and Proto-Shoggoth.

And now that I see the cards without the keywords I must say I'm totally convinced I like it better as it is now. :-)

Cheers !

Patrick

Glad you found the Riot and Maniac images, Wario. I'd had a quick look around, but saw nothing near to the standards of the artwork you've chosen so far.

The design and execution of these is looking better all the time - the text works great and I couldn't agree more on losing the keywords.

Glad to hear I'm not the only one who feels this way about the keywords. Now if I am to use the cards as a replacement for the cardboard tokens I think the only thing that's missing is the green 'Upon spawning' icon. Without it, I find it too easy to overlook these effects.

The text works well indeed. A lot of good descriptions can be found in the Call of Cthulhu RPG rulebook. I picked up that advice from someone elsewhere in the forums so I looked for that book and yes indeed, it really has a lot of good information on all the monsters and much more !

Hello!

Maniac and Riot monster card pictures uploaded. Riot one is added in firs post under Gug monster card becouse im not allowed to post more pictures in place it should go.

Riot is not showing angry mob in streets instead it shows man of law who defend themselves ... suits bit better if spawned in Antartica or other wildernes location.

I will work on "when spawned" icon and try to look where to place it on card. Cultist monster cards will follow soon.

Hello!

Here are some cultist monster cards with three "when spawned" icon placement variations. Which position feels proper ?

How about bottom left-hand corner, directly opposite the reckoning symbol? And maybe make the spawning symbol a touch bigger for prominence. Just my immediate thoughts.

I'm curious though, are you thinking of using all these pics for cultists? I really like the idea of having a variety of images. Great work as always.

I kept staring at those cards with the 'upon spawning' symbol and none of them felt right. I've eventually come to the same conclusion as Eldritch Mike : I'd also try to put the symbol in the left-hand corner and make it a bit bigger, possibly also a few shades lighter green. Symmetry will yield the best effect, I think. Looking at them as they are now, I sort of sense there's something 'just not right' about them. The cards themselves are of course, as always, top quality work ! Thanks !

I find the second - most traditional looking - cultist the best. :-)

Thank you for tips.

Here is fixed "when spawned" icon result : lighter, bigger, opposite reckoning.

I find "when spawned" icon least important, by this reason it was darker, smaller and still with black edge to make it less eye catching than "reckoning" icon.

(you need it only once, most of times you remember wich monster goes to Antartica and if after drawing new card you will read it, first text will be where to place it, not like original monster cubes wich you need to flip to read)

Maybe need to scale it down vertical or scale more horizontal so it would be more rounder and similar to reckoning.

Tried to place "when spawned" icon on top of reckonig, but it was stealing attention and right bottom side of card was to overhelming.

Another attemp was to place it in front of monster name or on top of chtulhu head. (its really tricky to get it in right place :) )

I mentioned before that i would like to make different Cultist pictures as many as cultist monster cubes Eldritch have.

On good side it would give anti invesigator characters and randomness each game. On bad side - feeling of united cult will be lost. So its still discussable.

Lets continue...

Wario, as far as I'm concerned the new version looks absolutely perfect !

As far as the importance of the green icon goes... As it's only used once it's so darn easy to forget about it if it's not visible very well.

As for the different images for cultists... I tend to prefer one and the same image for all cultists. That's of course solely my personal opinion. If you'd insist on having more perhaps you could create no more than there are expansions ? One particular cultist picture per expansion ? But again, one would do it for me (and the best of the lot was the second one in the series of four :) ).

In any case, cheers for the excellent and continuous work !

Hey!

Fixed general Cultist monster card uploaded in first post. For the other cultists will pause for now.

Good news is - all the monsters from base game is done. Now its time for base game Epic Monsters.

Edited by Wario

This is really great work ... but keeping up with all the expansions will be hard!

However, I'm impressed! :)

Now that I think about it Wario, do you even need the spawn symbol on the cards? We'd still be drawing the monster tokens to place on the game board, and that's where we see the spawn symbol. Once resolved, I guess you wouldn't need the symbol to appear on its respective card.

Hope this doesn't throw a bit of a spanner in the works - or maybe it'll even make things a little easier for you.

Whether to have the spawn symbol or not mostly depends on how you want to use the cards, I suppose. If you want to print them as mini cards and have them totally replace the cardboard tokens then the symbol is indispensable. If not then one can certainly live without it. :-)

Hello!

Thanks for interest and support!

PzVIE ,yes it can be hard to do all expansions but for now i would just say it will take time.

Eldritch Mike i see your point. To be honest I'm happy i was pushed to do "when spawned" icon, because we have it now.

Arkhan69 you got my point. I also think that "when spawned" icon is quite handy if monsters printed as mini cards.

So in general everything works out ... slowly :)

Here is first Epic monster sample. If you like "gore red" as difference between simple monsters and epic ones, I can continue for next ones.

Hi Wario !

Great to see you're pushing on with the Epic Monsters now. The Dunwich (no 'T' ! ;-) ) Horror definitely looks awesome. Not sure about the red, though... I mean, it doesn't look bad at all, but still I think I miss the lighter tone of the tokens. Have you tried with a lighter red, or even dark orange ? Perhaps that's not good at all and may spoil the darker mood of the cards. Perhaps this red *is* the best, but maybe it's worth giving it a try. I also wonder how it would look if the blood red paint extended further down ?... But hey, who am I to talk ? I can wonder all I want. For me it's just typing a few lines ("Try this", "Try that" :-) ). It sure looks good as it is. Just wondering if it could look even better, that's all. ;-)

Superb job. Thank you.
