Monster Cards Project

By Wario, in General Discussion

Hello!

Game is nearly perfect for me! Only thing i miss is proper monster encounter representation (somenting sceary like LOTR Lcg Nightmare deck style art).

Also some of my friends don't have any Lovecraft lore, and they are not scared of little cubes with bearly noticable monsters.

I have an idea to make printable cards (57x 89mm) with all monsters and epic monsters using same stats but more atmospheric art (maybe same artwork just bigger size :) .

Monster cubes still can do their job on map but on combat encounter phase you pick the card of current monster, put closer to you (next to investigator) and resolve combat.

Another bonus of monster cards can be "random monster drawing" just by shuffling monster deck and drawing card. Then for easy search of needed monster cubes you can arrange them in alphabetical order or by certain stats. Im sure bit of search time can be sacrificed for real deal monster fear.

What to do list :

1) Create proper quality card design template 95% - done!

a) Get good quality EH monster cube icons - done !

b) Get good fonts of find ones used in EH - done !

c) Find card back side design

d) Create monster card borders and text box - done !

2) Collect pictures for base game and expansions monsters 37% done!

a) Art used in EH monster cubes

b) Atmospheric art - possibly showing monster in action or showing monster size compared to human

c) No black and white pictures

3) Collect monster stats 100% done!

a) Base game

b) Expansions

4) Collect short monster descriptions 37% done! On Hold

a) Quotes from Lovecraft

b) Write somenthing interesting describing each monster encountering investigator

5) Set everything together and prepare monster cards for print.

6) Playtest

This idea was inspired by LOTR Lcg "creative artwork cards" forum thread and my sensei Glaurung Nightmare videos.

This is how i see it ...

This certainly has potential, but I don't suppose it would be very popular with Eldritch Horror as it adds some fiddliness.

I would definitely consider it in a possible remake. It would allow to put more text ona monster, if needed.

I really love this idea. Not only would the cards and artwork look amazing, but it would make shuffling the monster deck and drawing a card a lot easier than digging through a bag.

I absolutely support this idea. <3

this would require minis for the monsters and possibly the the AO

Thank you for support! BenEggler you got my point.

More or less task : "1) Create proper quality card design template " is done. I recreated most of icons and brainstormed design.

Project is 697x1063 pixsels with resolution 300. Here is preview.

Wow! These are looking absolutely beautiful, Wario!

I understand why some people may find this idea to be fiddly. The cards are rather large and won't fit on every space perfectly. However, even if the monster tiles remained on the board to represent where a monster was, it would be great to keep the cards in alphabetical order so that you can pull them out easily and keep them to the side of the board, allowing you to have a quick reference as to how many monsters are on the board.

Not to mention, most monsters end up on the city/location spaces (not the unnamed locations), which seem as if they might be large enough to accommodate the size of these cards.

Having the information so readily on the front of these cards makes recalling a monster's reckoning effect (and other effects) so easy. Not to mention, I would have a lot more fun battling a monster with a larger image and flavor text on the card to intimidate me.

Let me know if I can help at all, Wario. If this project is completed, I'm absolutely going to implement it into my game.

Thanks!

Of course I need help. Anybody can help to find good pictures for monster cards around internet.

Big resolution is always better, dont' collect balck and white or 3d art, its out of style for this project.

To keep things clear - post only links of best pictures ! ( And write artist name under it straight away if you can find it )

Here are a couple great images for Colour out of Space. The second one might seem as if it would be off, but the artist on their Deviant Art page said that there's mention in one of Lovecraft's stories that the Colour out of Space almost seemed like living trees. Finding that quote sounds like it would be great for the card description. I personally think that the first image might be best.

This is the closest image I can find that looks suitable for a Cultist. I can't believe that there are NO good drawings of mysterious people in robes. I'll keep searching, as well!

Actually, here is an image that might be really good for a Cultist.

Tnx for helping, its inspiration for me.

Think we can search more for Color out of space. I feel that first picture is 3d and could be more scary.

Second one is intresting and i will try to put it in as test. I love Cultist art, especialy first one! Let's continue.

Work is going forward, just uploaded fivemore pictures ( check my second post ).

Wow! All of the artwork you're finding is incredible. Where are you looking for your images?

Amazing cards examples. Is only need to do more micromanaging with cards and tokens. But still I love the idea

Hi Wario, just wanted to point out a couple of corrections you'll want to make before finalising these (I don't want to be nit-picky, but after putting in so much work I'm sure you'll want these to be perfect!):

On the Gug card, defeat is there with an extra 'a' (deafeat).

And on the Nightgaunt, I'm assuming it's being listed as Viscous? In which case the 's' is missing.

These really are looking terrific though, Wario. Great work and great finds of great artwork.

To be honest, there are quite a few more typos than those, as well. It might be easiest to wait until all pictures/quotes are found before fixing them, so that they can all be done at one time.

Hey all! Tnx for your interest!

I agree that to fix mistakes in one time is good solution. Please forgive me grammar mistakes for now :)

Somebody should start to write a list of fixses. You can always name monster name of card and grammar or typos fixses needed.

As for images - I'm just searching by "tag name" and it shows the way itself. Harder is to get artist title. So if somebody can share info - cards will be updated.

Mi-go and Byakhee cards added.

Yeah, and I just noticed that I myself missed the I in viscious... d'oh.

I think there's a few grammatical fixes to be made as well. As someone who spends a bit of time writing, I'd be glad to help out any way I can with this side of things, if wario prefers.

I could even do a little research into each monster and try to provide snippets for the small print text, preferably using sources to give the final result a slightly more professional read and feel.

Eldritch Mike, it's actually "vicious." There isn't even an 's' in there. =P

I'd be happy to handle things on the grammar and spelling front. I do a lot of writing and I pride myself on my grammatical prowess. It would make me very happy to be able to contribute those skills to this project.

Eldritch Mike, I think it would be great if you looked for quotes and snippets. I honestly have no idea where to even start looking for those things, as I'm not terribly familiar with Lovecraft's work, despite my interest in it (something I hope to change in the future).

Perhaps I'll add another post and edit it as this moves along with fixes for the spelling and grammar, just like Wario is doing with the cards themselves. I'll get to work on that tomorrow!

*face-palm* You're absolutely right of course, Ben. I've no idea how I didn't realise that. Well, there goes my credibility :D

My day off work, so thought I'd also try and help a little on the picture side of things. Found a couple of nice candidates for the Witch:

Witch by Ivangod on deviantart.

Witch by Tjota on deviantart.

There's a lot of witchy pics to be found, but these two I think suit the theme best. Just not sure which I prefer.

Also, Wario, it looks like you're focusing on the original group of monsters that came with the base game. Do you have the expansions? There's a substantial number of additions to be made, but I'll understand if you just want to focus on these ones for now.

Also lots of good options on deviantart for Deep Ones.

Rather like this one: Deep One by Belz000.

And before I have to go, here are a few samples of what I'm thinking with regards to text for the cards. As Wario outlined, I'll try and provide a source quote and/or a little description. Whether these can be used or not I don't know (maybe too long in places?):

Gug:

"The head was chiefly terrible because of the mouth..." - H. P. Lovecraft.

Banished to the Underworld by the Great Ones for an unnamed blasphemy, they now reside in a terrifying city in the Dreamlands.

Dark Young:

"The mouths were like leaves, and the whole thing was like a tree in the wind..." - R. Bloch.

There where their Mother's faith is strongest, you will find the terrible Dark Young.

Nightgaunt:

"They never spoke or laughed, and never smiled because they had no faces at all to smile with, but only a suggestive blankness where a face ought to be." - H. P. Lovecraft.

Servants of Lord Nodens, the Nightgaunts guard the mountain Ngranek, from whence they travel to and from the Dreamlands to worlds beyond.

Hey!

zazas your Shoggoth picture i like.

Eldritch Mike, both Witch pictures is good looking, both grim, but im still looking for somenting full human size and in action, i have few variations also but nothing terrific :)

Same for Deep one.

About text " (maybe too long in places?) " on cards you can see how many rows you have. Also i must say qoutes seem to not work, i think becouse they are taken from stories where fear delivery is extended. I would offer to invent somenting that makes essence, and give us adrenalin...quick vision of dangers you will have in next 3 min? Im taking my texts from wiki descriptions cuting out what seems most important. The Elder Thing description with Shoggoth mentioned was to bring out connection between them in actual gameplay. (if it happens)

Also phenomen - there is more monsters in earth world (on game board) than in otherworld encounters. Should we mention dimensions from where monsters come if you don't meet those monsters in otherworld encounters ? Maybe...Sounds thematic, or can be better ?

For now lets finish base game monsters and then can do most popular expansons one by one. Around hundred monsters if counting epic.

It will take a while.

Possibly monster card art can be changed later if even better pic is found.

Chtonian pic sample posted.

Chtonian text maybe can be :" Earth shakes and opens under you, he feels your every move!"

I think the artwork will do that for you. The text, which is secondary, can offer something a bit different in terms of insight or context. Personally, I'd rather use the quotes than the info, even if the info can help those of us who don't know the Lovecraft Mythos terribly well to build up an idea of how these creatures are connected and where they come from. I also think if the text is too excitable it'll come across as a little childish and out of keeping with what is an intelligent, horror-themed game. But, of course, it's your call.

Unfortunately, it seems I won't have nearly as much free time on my hands as previously thought. My partner and me have just applied for a new house (I never expected we'd find one so fast!) and with the prospect of moving over the coming days and weeks I'm sure I'll have a thousand and one things to sort out (including planning for a games room practically dedicated to EH, where I can finally give it the space needed to spread its tentacles. Can't wait :D ).

Eldritch Mike you are right. My gibberish text can be out of place. I'm just judging by myself, so its possible to put card text wich is most liked by all of us on release. Critics are wellcome.

Characteristics in front of monster name can be edited of course same way.

Also we can look on Call of Cthulhu LCG cards as done option.
