SirWilli's Workshop: Armada stuff

By SirWillibald, in Star Wars: Armada

While we wait for wave 2 I figured I would show my tuckboxes.

This is one of every ship and two squadron packs from the core set and wave one. I pack them into 2 - 4 liter "really usefulboxes" and then put them in an old backpack for easy carrying.

Ok, Found my old pics of the box and my AFII fit in just fine.

Hmm, that's kinda strange, my first guess was that you printed at less than 100% (the MkII might fit anyway), but your other hangars fit perfectly as it seems. Anyway, I've already designed an alternate MKII hangar that fits better.

What do you think of this alternative storage box for upgrades? I'm undecided... Worth exploring? Waste of time? (Of course I would reduce the height, I somehow messed up this prototype.)

Yeah I would build that upgrade box for sure

I would LOVE that box. Very sleek and saves more space if you don't fill the boxes in the current form.

I finally got started with making the Wave 2 boxes. I'm going to need a second container :)

John.

Nice card box. I went back and forth trying to decide on a single row, or multiple row solution for mine. Went with multi. This is an early picture. I've pretty much finished it, now.

Unfortunately, I'm already out of space. Another expansion or two and I'll have to remake it somehow. Currently, it is in either an 8 or 10 squadron hangar box, so there is no room to expand. I'm going to have to use custom dimensions, or store the ship cards seperately...

Also of note is that I prefer to keep the lid raised by making the lid walls as high as I need the lid to stay, rather than columns to hold the lid up. If you really want those blocks for lid height, why not put them in the lid instead? That should make it easier to access the cards

See THAT'S the reason why I really like sharing ideas before I'm done, getting constructive feedback like yours, thanks!

Actually I didn't even think about re-purposing my own CarrierBox for this, what a great and time-saving idea! I didn't even think about making multiple rows, but it sounds like a idea worth exploring.

I'm not totally happy with the columns myself, I've added them mainly to help stabilize the box and to protect the dividers, because without the columns the lid would rest on the dividers, which might damage them. But using two rows and dividers of your width (again, great idea to simply use the size-1-tuckbox top) this shouldn't be a problem. And the box can be stabilized in other ways.

So, thanks again, this was really helpful and a bit deflating, since I simply didn't think of using my own stuff... Honestly, how stupid can you get?

That upgrade box tickles my OCD in just the right way.

No problem. Glad to help.

I find it funny that you noticed the small tuckbox bottoms. Using the bottom and backs works great. I had to Photoshop them to orient the bottoms properly to the backs(otherwise, they would be upside down), and they all fit on a single sheet, if I remember correctly.

For my box, the row dividers add enough strength to not need anything else. As for keeping the lid off the dividers, I just made the lid as tall as needed. Sitting on the table, the height of the lid holds itself above the dividers. You could pick the box up and force the bottom and top together to squish the dividers, but mine fold back just above the cards to give them some give, anyways.

I like the idea, but I've run out of space for upgrades and there is no room for expansion without removing the Ship Cards. That is what must be done, but I hate the idea of ruining the All-in-One box. I think I'm going to make a Ship Card Tuckbox holder with the same footprint as the repurposed carrier box, then attach it to the bottom. That causes other issue, though. We'll see what happens.

I'm interested in seeing what you come up with!

For people who are looking for a storage box with a little more room.

The Really Useful Box size 7L is the same depth as the 4L just bigger in each direction.

I managed to fit 65 of the squadrons into one of these boxes.

a single TIE/LN ????

Don't worry, once I finish the tuck boxes for the Rogues and Villains expansions I will fill up 2 of these boxes and still have some fighters left over.

Did a small update on my site, additional bigger Firespray hangar, better fold lines and new MkII hangar (Really Useful version...):

The GearBoxes will get better fold lines, as well, probably secretly and quietly, because the next update will take a few more days. But it will be awesome… At least I hope so…

lol

Could you post the exact outer dimensions? I'd like to know if this one would fit into my gaming cupboard...

I am literally checking the forums for your update with the upgrade box every day. I have way more hope in you than in an update about Wave 3 from FFG.

Know what? This posting just crashed my plan for today, wanted to finish my first X-Wing epic hangar but suddenly I find myself printing another upgrade card box prototype...

Hmm, that's kinda strange, my first guess was that you printed at less than 100% (the MkII might fit anyway), but your other hangars fit perfectly as it seems. Anyway, I've already designed an alternate MKII hangar that fits better.

This box looks amazing! I'd totally use something like this. I've just started printing all your IA boxes and am going to do Armada soon. Any idea on when this box will be released? I much prefer it to having to store each upgrade type individually

Working on it right now, even though it already looks different, Prototype one just went into my fireplace ...

Willibald for President! I don't care that he is German. He delivers better than the rest of the clowns we have.

;)

And tadaa, what do you think:

20160121.jpg

Are you OK if the lid doesn't go all the way down? Otherwise the lid just barely doesn't fit onto the print sheet. The main box is a 6-squad-CarrierBox, btw, so in the end you can use pretty much whatever CarrierBox size you like. The one shown easily holds my complete one-of-everything collection.

20160122.jpg

The dividers will be a little bit higher in the end.

20160123.jpg

This bothers me a little, think I'll make an optional prism shaped spacer to prevent the overhang.

Feel free to tell me what you think, this one's pretty much teamwork. :)

Yeah, you probably don't want to be president. What sane person would?

I personally, liked the smaller one row box, but this one is really nice too.

It is looking great. The overhang wouldn't bother me, but I get it.

Are you making it for cards with covers only? I should probably get covers anyway, shouldn't I?

I have no problem with the lid not going all the way down, but am curious: If something gets stacked on top of the box, where is the weight resting? On the dividers?

Yes, exactly, and this sucks, I just gave it a try... But I also dislike my huge columns, regardless of where they are glued (box or lid), so I just printed out a new prototype with a different concept, going to give it a try tomorrow evening, need some sleep now (it's midnight in germany...).

Getting closer...

The new box (dividers too high this time):

And a look inside (yes, I destroyed the lid just to show you), no harm done to the dividers, lid rests on the reinforced walls):

Just a few more tweaks...
