Thoughts on new EU

By GrandAdmiralCrunch, in Star Wars: Armada Off-Topic

I recently tried reading the X-Wing series, but... sorry - just too boring. I read A New Dawn and really liked it. I'm reading Tarkin now and am liking it more. Luceno does a great job of re-canonizing the Essential Atlas , for which I am tremendously grateful.

Also I never understood when Star Wars fans complain about a Star Wars book or show seeming like it is targeted at kids. My answer is "You're Right!"

Star Wars was and is, aside from some of the old EU books, targeted at the ages of 10-15. So when you are watching a Star Wars show remember that you the Grownup Adult are not the Target audience. So let your inner boy out and enjoy it for how it makes you feel young again.

Agreed!

Maybe if I had been capable of similar sentiment when I first watch Phantom Menace, I would have been more generous towards it. But I wasn't in the right stage of life for that at the time.

I want to Like Rebels, but it has a lot of inconsistencies in it. Also it is geared towards the younger audience. I could probably see an episode and then go to the nearest Toys'R'Us and get the new toy it featured. it got better as the season went on. Some of my complaints is focused on Kanan and Ezra. Ezra is somehow able to build in less then 2 weeks with a single crystal which he happens to get, a combination Balster/Sword (which we have never seen before), and some how is able to easily cut through the outer hull of an Imperial Star Destroyer that was practically a half a meter thick. Then Kanan cannot hit a storm trooper less then 5 meters away, but later on in the same scene he is able to hit one while riding backwards on a moving speeder with a single shot.

I also wanted to like Rebels. The production design, the sound effects, Tarkin, and Sabine are all high points.

However the storytelling is predictable and relatively flat. I'd recommend watching the first episode and the last two. There's a handful of episodes in the middle worth watching (the astroid with the dark creatures, the academy cadet infiltration, the jedi temple), but most are just slow and grating.

On the other hand if you haven't seen the Clone Wars, that show is really tight and punchy. It not only features some great characters that will show up in Rebels season 2 (hopefully better than season 1), but has the best Yoda out of any Star Wars movie, book, or anything, hands down.

Here is the thing folks, the EU (Legends) is NOT gone into the ether, discontinued, dissolved or eradicated. Consider that all of the EU is now SHROODINGER'S EWOK. Everything in the EU remains a viable pool of data, lore, and stories to be tapped by the current administration of the Star Wars Story Group for Disney, and they ALREADY are tapping that pool for ideas. Everything in Legends status exists now as it ever has, simultaneously True, False, and/or containing a Kernel of Truth. Things in the EU from now on have mostly equal chances of being Edited, rewritten, referenced, borrowed, deleted, or confirmed, as they see fit. The parts MOST at risk are the NR/NJO era items as they are being in direct conflict with the new Trilogy. But even in there, some things from EU are already Re-Canonized. Fett Lives, remember?

All the (4 if you were counting) previous versions of Fett's escape/survival from the Sarlaacc have been your basic Bar Tales of fellas sitting around swapping "Legends" of "Oh, I heard ....." or "No pudu, there I was and.....". But with the revelation/reference/use by a New Canon source (Battlefront), you have the fella that comes in and says "What REALLY happened was...."

Any bits of the EU that do not have a project directly assigned to them (unlike Solo's Origin, The DS Plans Mission, Rebels era, and The Post-quells) are pretty much safe. Even in Old canon we had to deal with convoluted mishaps in continuity, how do you think the Solos ended up with three kids? Now we will get the "true" version of events, while everything that has come before was given in the "Certain Point of View" of a third party.

As a reboot, JJ did a great job of making nu-trek plausible. It was beautiful to watch and didn't disrespect the classic treks. It probably wasn't his call to reboot it, but it was his job to make it enjoyable to new comers and long time fans alike

I say this as a fan with every episode and movie on DVD.

So now he has star wars in his hands, which isn't getting rebooted as such. I think he will respect the EU where he can. Remember, he is only director for the first movie, not the over arching producer (read Emperor) of the new content. That's Disney's story teams domain

Plausible? A disgraced third year cadet being given command of the fleets flagship is plausible? Interplanetary beaming? Truth is stranger than fiction because fiction is obliged to make sense. JJ Trek came across to me as being made by someone who got all their knowledge of Trek from parodies and caricatures of Star Trek.

I'm also going to take issue with beautiful to watch. I couldn't see it most of the time because either a light was shining in my face or he was banging on the camera or otherwise whipping the camera around. The brewery engine room, beautiful? Really? I fear for the future of film-making if what JJ does is going to be considered "beautiful."

As a Navy Man, that brewery engine room is far more realistic to the real thing than the gleaming single phallic glowing engine core thingy seen in most other interpretations. Machinery spaces are cramped, messy, noisy and full of piping.

Also, whilst giving command to a 3rd year cadet seems a bit rediculous, a ship only has so many command trained officers, other specialists, such as engineers, supply and doctors, cannot exercise command.

Hell, I was 3rd in command of a patrol boat after being in the navy only 18 months. 5th in command of a frigate after 3 years

The thing is Enterprise couldn't be considered a patrol boat or even a frigate. If I remember right in WW II command of a PT boat was often a Lieutenant's billet while command of a Frigate was a Lieutenant Commander or Commander's billet. Command of Enterprise would be a Captain's billet I don't think anyone would have complained about Kirk being given command of a patrol boat or Corvette equivalent after the events of Tre 2009.

That being said while I despise many things about the Abrams Trek movies and the Abramsverse version of Kirk him ending up in command of Enterprise was not one of them. He saved the capital planet of the Federation after all and had the full support of his predecessor. Plus if they were so desperate for personnel that they had to activate the senior cadets to crew the fleet it makes sense that there be a severe shortage of command trained officers IMO And from what we see in the beginning of Into Darkness it seems like Kirk was being assigned fairly easy missions which would be a good thing to do in order to let him gain more experience before throwing him into the deep end.

Pfft, I'm in complete command of a star destroyer and I've only been in the imperial navy for like 2 months.

Two months including training or after training? What class of Star Destroyer? And in any case what did your character do to earn that position so fast? Please don't say it was pure patronage because the only way that would make sense IMO is if your patron happens to be Palpatine or Vader.

Fortunately for me I let the early EU pass me by. I though about picking up some of the books and reading them since I enjoy reading quite a bit, but I saw an early interview with George Lucas talking about the EU at the time. He said that as far as he was concerned they were canon... "for the time being." He reserved the right to completely change anything in the EU at anytime he decided to produce anymore Star Wars material. That turned me off the early EU, because I feared that whatever I read might someday be washed away at George's whim.

Now that Disney has control of the franchise and actually has a committee, or group, or something, that dictates what is and is not considered canon, I have finally started reading the novels that have been approved as canon in the current Star Wars universe. Besides I have a bit more time to read now and use a kindle. I have read New Horizons, Tarkin, Lords of the Sith and just started Aftermath. I have enjoyed them so far.

I just finished reading aftermath. it's not bad but it's not amazing either. spoilers bellow.

General impressions: I like the world building in the book. I found its depiction of the empires collapsing and fractured state more interesting and realistic then the long drawn out 'oh look the emperor cloned himself or oh look the empire has another super weapon.' that said the writing was bog standard franchise tie in genre fiction.

the bad:
The main cast is criminally boring and wooden. I could't care less about these characters.
the writing style is bizarre and most of the characters 'sound' the same.
the main plot wasnt terrible but had little payoff and just involved the characters running around in circles.
all told, it was just a boring book.

the good:
world building, specifically the interlude sections. every few chapters was separated by an interlude short chapter which described the ongoing conflict between the newly formed new republic and the fractured empire. it doesn't cover the full collapse of the empire, but a couple other books cover it apparently. I don't want to get into too many details but io9 has a pretty good summary up of what we know so far post RotJ.

while not very thrilling at least it isn't IG-88 taking control of the death star computer bad. Though how a bounty hunter was able to track leia to the empires top secret research and construction facilities at endor and not get discovered is pretty silly. Bounty hunter lady must have killed a **** ton of bothans.
