Sorastro's Painting

By Sorastro, in Imperial Assault Painting and Modification

Just wanted to say Sorastro you are the best. I would be no were with out you tutorials. U are awesome

Wow, nice to see your progression and improvement there, really good work Rockroi!

(it's almost like a little story seeing how you've gone along and learnt more, there's hope for me yet! ;) haha)

After a several month hiatus I was inspired to pick up the paintbrush again a week or two ago and have produced these guys:

C3PO

Heavy Bucketheads - these guys were painted with the "new" techniques from the Kayn Somos video and they look so much better than my original Stormtroopers that I am embarrassed to look at the old figures!

Cont...

I went rogue with these guys and painted them different colours to the tutorial video. Interestingly one was a green base colour and the other blue, but after highlights and washes and glazes and whatnot, they look basically identical.

Rebel Sabs

The Rebel Troopers came out well - i had to wing it with a few colours I didn't own, but otherwise followed the vids for these guys.

Rebel Troopers

These next two were quite experimental as I had no video to follow. I tried two different techniques. First, I painted one a blue/grey base tone (russ grey, dawnstone, touch of leadbelcher) drybrushed a bit of necron compound, and washed it with nuln oil...

ISB Infiltrator 1

Then for the second one I drybrushed it with necron compound directly onto the white primer, and then washed it two or three times with a nuln oil/drakenhof nightshade/lahmian medium mix. I think I prefer the armour on this second guy, but I did the face/hair better on the first one.

Then last night I did Chewie, because I felt like I was back in the saddle enough to paint a character I cared about ;)

Sorry for the mass post spam.

Has anyone painted Dengar yet? Not sure how to tackle his brown metallic armour. Tempting to try necron compound over white then wash with Agrax Earthshade but not totally sure.

post spam is good in this forum.

have you watched the general weiss or biv bodhrik videos. Love that technique of the metallic base with the technical red paint (name escapes me). couple that concept with the thinned screaming skull technique from the wampas. so, maybe use the stormhost silver or hashut copper as a base, wash in agrax earthshade, and then use a really thin mournfang brown to highlight; continue brightening with balor brown? just grasping at browns here as i don't have them in front of me. I'm probably making things more complicated than they need to be...

Here's Dengar...

I used a 50:50 mix of Sycorax Bronze and Rhinox Hide for the base colour of his armour, then highlighted in a 2:1 mix of the bronze and hide. Looks ok I think. Maybe the highlight is a bit too bright, but i think the base colour is pretty good.

I also had a go at Leia and I'm not particularly happy with how she came out. I can't do faces. Just too small.

Just noticed i posted the wrong pic for ISB Infiltrator 2 above...

That's the second attempt - necron compound drybrushed onto white, then progressive washes with blue/black.

Just wanted to share a few pictures of my first ever miniatures. Sorastro, you are awesome! You single handedly got me into the hobby, thank you!

For the stormtrooper I used a diluted wash of the nuln oil and pretty much stopped after that step, I didn't add the extra white highlights because I was a bit nervous. Worked up the courage a little more with the probe droid, with more highlights and drybrushing. All in all, I'm excited to continue and thanks again to Sorastro. :)

The trooper looks good. Diluting the wash makes a huge difference. A little varnish would be a great finishing touch. Ardcoat or similar.

What primer did you use? I used citadel corax white for my troopers and I found it left quite a rough surface which didn't suit the troopers. Army Painter's white primer was much smoother and gave a better finish.

Hi guys! I haven't posted in this topic for ages, but I'm still painting my Imperial Assault minis, and still following Sorastro's tutorials while I do it. I'm working on Kayn Somos, some Heavy Stormtroopers, and some extra Stormtroopers at the moment. Here's what I've painted in the meantime.

The lights I have to use to light the photos have annoyingly dulled the highlights and changed how the colour looks in the pictures. I'm pleased with the bantha though. Thanks go to Sorastro for that, I reckon that and the Lando one (the method of painting the cloak lining! Genius!) are the best painting tutorials I've seen anywhere.

Hi hulkaioa06! Thanks so much for sharing your work! It's always wonderful to see a new painter producing such great-looking miniatures and having the confidence to share the progress being made. I think you must have got the shade thinned just right for your stromtroopers because they really look terrific! :)

Wow! Just outstanding work feltmonkey! Lovely, clean painting and some nice smooth transitions :)

Awesome job, Feltmonkey. I should really paint some figure based on Sorastro's tutorials. I have used the tutorials on painting the hairs of my figures though. But Lando and Bantha. I should really paint them. The Bantha has been primed for months now and is just waiting a paint as well as the second pair of tusken raiders.

We started the Jabba campaign in Imperial Assault and so I've painted the two heroes used in the campaign and the enemies that will appear. Since I'm the Imperial player, I know what will show up in advance and I can prepare. Looking forward to the Rancor. Already green stuffed all the gaps.

I actually used citadel at first too and was not happy with the results. I think I may have had a bad can as it was coming out more off-white/gray than pure white. I switched to tamiya fine primer and have been happy with it since.

Your results matched mine - it's more of a pale grey than white, and not smooth at all. The Army Painter is better but not perfect*. I might see if I can find Tamiya in stock anywhere.

*possibly operator error ;)

Bantha looks great, good job! I just got mine to the shade and need to finish the high lights, but I agree this has been one of my favourite tutorials. I have found these figures to take a lot more time than others though, I think it is because of some lessons I have learned and mistakes I am trying not to repeat as I will outline in my next figure post (coming up soon as the bantha is done).

One thing I did notice with the wash, when my figures are drying I see the odd splotchy mark, it almost looks like the shade dried un evenly or was re applied or smeared around before it dried. I was so, so careful this time with my shading to really only go over it with just the initial brush strokes. And still it just doesn't look very smooth. Could it be the brush I am using? It is very beat up, the same brush I use for mixing paints as I find shading to be quite rough. Or could it be my mixture? I thought I followed the tutorial to a T but I guess I could have under or over estimated one of the shades. I know this is hard to diagnose without pictures, I can post some when I get home, but figured I would ask to see if anyone else ran into a similar problem. Maybe post high light it will be a lot cleaner and less noticeable.

Just here to say congrats to @Sorastro (hey, mentions work now!) for getting a GW sponsorship on his latest video!

I had a go at the Repulsor Tank from the Hoth expansion. Partly because I wanted to use the snow texture paint again!

31939389223_d70fe864bc.jpg

I think the "face" of the tank is lacking in character compared to an AT-ST but I quite like the rest of the vehicle. The pilot looks surprisingly ok considering he was just primed in white and given a diluted wash with nuln oil, then neat nuln oil for the eyes. That gives me some heart for facing the rest of the snowtroopers in the Hoth expansion!

Where do you get the tufts of grass for the AT-ST bases?

Hi fellow painters!

The wampas are here! Happy New Year to you all :)

been painting my wampas this week. just want to throw out there i used Citadels' Valhallan Blizzard for the snow on the base as well as the wampa itself. Goes on easy; dries fast and makes for a nice effect. by the way, this is a quote from sorastro's original post when his wampas were complete. The above photo is not my wampa but will post my own photos soon

Hi HK-47! I also recently tried out the Valhallan Blizzard and I have to agree - it's really excellent! I'll certainly be using it in some future videos.. :)

I saw your web page, can't wait to see what you do with that Rancor!
