Sorastro's Painting

By Sorastro, in Imperial Assault Painting and Modification

Hey Sorasto,

After having gone at my Bantha myself, and now watching your video, I have a question you might be able to answer. When washing a bag model lke the bantha, I often find that the wash runs 'down' the model and pooling at the bottom (near the feets etc.). How do you avoid that? Do you have a good trick :)

One method is to hold the model upside down, so the extra wash pools in the recesses better. Also consider using less wash on your brush, so you can better control the flow. One last bit of advice, if you still find wash pooling where you don't want it, soak it back up with your brush until you're satisfied with the result.

Works pretty well for me, especially holding the model upside down, or at least at an angle that helps the wash go where you want it.

Hi Aeimet69! Sorry for not getting back to you, but I couldn't have but it any better than Eljeffe :)

Thanks for the replies. Don't worry Sorasto. A responsetime of less than 1 day is quite good :)

That's more or less what I already try to do. Guess I have to try better! :)

@Sorastro...

I believe I recall your saying you used Rosemary and Co. brushes. How long does a brush keep a point for you? I find my brushes losing their point after 4-5 minis, which is incredibly frustrating. They are pretty cheap Winsor Newton brushes from HobbyLobby, and I have splurged on a Series 7 brush recently but can't bring myself to open the package fearing that I'll ruin that one as well.

Those from Hobbylobby are either synthetic or a mixture with synthetic bristles. The acrylic paint will cause it to curl after a little bit of painting. I was able to get Windsor & Newton kolinsky Sable brushes at pat catan's. They are not the series 7 brushes but they work. So I would use the series 7 you have in place of the others. I only use synthetics for mixing paint, metallic, or dry brushing.

I was bought a couple of the Series 7 ones as a Birthday present and after being exactly the same for about a month bit the bullet and used them.

Totally off the chart different, i find myself keeping the brush wetter than the other brushes I've used and have done about 32 minis so far without any effect on the point a\t all

Hi tomkat364! I confess I'm not the best when it comes to brush care, but I have to agree with Soontirbeblownup in saying that a good quality brush will last a lot longer provided you clean it regularly and try not to let paint get into the ferule (something I do all the time!) :)

I'm using Princeton Round Kolinsky Sable brushes and the #2 has kept its point and works good but the #0 has lost its point and it has really affected my accuracy for painting. The brush retailed for I believe $14 Canadian, so it wasn't cheap. But maybe this is a cheaper brand of Kolinsky? I don't mind spending the money for something that will last as it makes the painting 100x easier. I am using the masters brush cleaner (beige container) and always take care to not mash the bristles when painting or cleaning.

This is a link to the brush and the store I bought it from:

http://www.artplacement.com/artstore/products/Princeton_7050.php

Is there a brush on that list that is better than the one I got? Or did I just not manage to do a good enough job taking care of this one? I've only painted about 15 minis with it, but I noticed it losing its point at around mini 10. It's gotten to the point now where I haven't painted in over a month as I get frustrated with the tip splattering paint where I don't want it :(

FrogTrigger - One thing I like to do that helps maintain my brush tips is to leave some of the Master's Brush Cleaner on the bristles after I've cleaned the brush. This hardens when dry and can keep the point a bit longer than if you don't do it. Just be absolutely certain you wet the brush and rinse out the soap before you use it again. Also, under no circumstances allow the brush to bump into anything as you could snap some of the bristles. I've been using the same size 0 Winsor and Newton Sable Series 7 brush for almost 2 years, and it's just now starting to lose the tip it had.

Ya so it was something I did wrong then, is there anyway to try and bring the tip back? Maybe use the method you said above? Or is it a situation of once you lose the shape its over?

I guess I must have just been to rough with it while I was painting. Inexperience maybe have been the downfall of that brush.

I wouldn't beat yourself up over it. Some brushes don't last 2 years, that's for sure. I'm not sure of any restorative action you can take now with it, to be honest. If a brush loses it's tip, I typically repurpose that brush for less detail-oriented work, such as base coats, glazes, washes, that kind of thing. For example, my size 0 brush may not have as fine a tip as it once did, but it still puts down a smooth layer of paint. I use it as my base coat brush now, instead of the highlighting brush I used to use it for.

Heads up: Sorastro's Rebel Troopers video is up :)

Enjoy!

Uh, nice! Still haven't painted mine, so that'll be some welcome help if I ever get to it.

I'm so far behind, Sorastro you maniac slow down!!!! Just kidding, glad you are living the dream! These content updates are fast and furious, I enjoy watching the videos even if I am not there yet. Oh and if you guys aren't already supporting him, he does have a patreon page here:

Painting tracker in my sig updated again.

In the process of doing Chewie, Garkhaan and the Wookie Warriors. Just finished Mak and Davith. Need to get back to posing some pics!

Ahh so you are the one I need to thank for that google sheet. Thank you sir. It has been of great service to me.

It's my pleasure! It's been helpful to me when I go to my FLGS, since I have long since exceeded being able to track the paints I have on hand without assistance. :P

I also have Descent, so I may add a tab for Sorastro's Descent tutorials...

Heads up: Sorastro's General Weiss video is up! :)

Enjoy!

Mother of god, he's on fire.

I suppose "unemployment" will do that to a fella. :P

EDIT - tracking sheet is current once again

Curious, when you guys clean your very small brushes with the masters cleaner how do you not smear the brushes around? With a #2 it is easy to just over in circles and keep the shape of the brush, but I find with the small ones like a 0 or 00 it is impossible to not spread the bristles out. I think this might have been what ruined my last brush. I'm going to go buy a new one today so I want to make sure I do this one right.

For my '0's and smaller, I'll get a dab of the cleaner on the brush and then slowly pull the brush around the perimeter of the master's brush cleaner tin while rotating the brush. Just go really slow and have patience. The smaller the brush head, the less evident the efficacy of your maintenance. But be sure you're doing right by the brush.

As far as maintaining a straight vs. curved tip, I believe it is all in technique. Any '0' or smaller brush, I build up a curve pretty quickly. That said, I've adapted and have learned to paint to with the curved brush. I believe my own error is being a little to forceful with my brushstrokes, however, my depth perception is terrible. I've tried different brands for small brushes and have wound up with curved bristles every time; so in my own case I blame the painter, not the product.

Hi folks! Better steady those hands.. the Biv is coming :)

That Biv is looking sharp!

Tracker updated to account for Biv.

I'm going to make a couple updates when I have time...

1) Add rows for primer color

2) I've ignored the occasional reference to Vallejo paints, but I think I'll add those, too. They seem to be optional so I'll put them in parens or something so that people don't accidentally double up

3) Now that we're at 107 paint colors (mother of god) I may modify or add to the coloring scheme I use for paint usage. I should also put a reference about that in the sheet, I suppose. It just occurred to me that it's not obvious what they mean unless someone's been following along here

4) Since I'm starting to play Descent, I'll probably account for Descent minis too. Need to think of the best way to do that. I may just add a second tab to sheet. Or maybe I'll do that and do a third tab that aggregates everything with some filters. Who knows
