Sorastro's Painting

By Sorastro, in Imperial Assault Painting and Modification

Hi guys,

Like a few posters before me, I have been inspired to pick up a paint brush and make ham-fisted efforts to paint my IA minis by Sorastro's YouTube series. I'll try to post some pictures of my attempts so far at some point :)

I just started playing the Empire in a Twin Shadows mini campaign, so I am keen to paint my Tuskens. Has anyone worked out a good colour scheme for them?

cheers,

Udat

I used Zandri Dust and Mournfang Brown for the most part. I used a drybrush of tyrant's skull as well. I'm hoping those are the correct color names. i painted them a while ago.

Those look pretty cool. What wash did you use, if any? I was thinking that the "sepia" wash from Citadel would be a decent choice.

Pretty sure I just used Agrax Earthshade.

Also, on the regular figures pictured, for the wraps I think I mixed the Zandri Dust with Steel Legion Drab to better match what's seen in the films.

I'm just waiting for the wash to dry on my first Tuskens. In the meantime, here's my journey so far since first picking up a brush ~3 weeks ago :)

Most impressive udat! Your trando in particular has come out beautifully :)

I'll also be referring to the great ideas flying around for the sandpeople when I get to painting mine :D

Nice work. I was the same way when I started painting them up about a year ago. The difference in skill between my Royal Guards (some of the first I painted) and my Tuskens (last stuff I got painted) is astonishing. I really like your Trandoshans. Looking forward to tackling my RtH stuff but I'm also painting out game groups Tzolk'in gears. If I show up with new IA **** painted without having the gears done they will call shenanigans on me.

Thanks guys. I am really pleased with how the Trandoshans came out as well. While the pose made some parts of the figure hard to paint, the skin detail and pleasingly massive eyes made them a pleasure to work on!

Here's the first pair of Tusken Raiders. The sepia wash left some surprisingly yellow bits when it dried that I wasn't expecting. I think I will just use earthshade on the next two, instead. I also think I might lighten the Zandri Dust base colour for the robes.

Phew. Finally finished Mak. I feel kinda lazy painting one hero in the time Sorastro has almost made two tutorials. :)

Anyway, here's Mak. I like how the visor turned out even though I didn't have Moot Green so I mixed my own "Moot Green" from Caliban Green, Flash Gitz Yellow and White Scar.

And with Mak done, all my heroes are painted:

My personal favorite is Verena since it's basically painted with the skills I've learned from Sorastro's videos but I had to make the difficult color choices etc. And I didn't ruin the figure! Anyway, my point is. Thank you again, Sorastro. And thank you everyone else too. It has helped my painting a lot when I've been able to use some of your paint jobs as reference when choosing paints.

That is nothing short of stunning work Elrath! Bold, clean colors, lovely smooth transitions between layers, and terrific judgement and appreciation of contrast (SO important!). Wonderful :)

I'm jealous of having all the heroes done, but I've been getting quite a bit of work done for the Empire and mercenaries. I'm probably going to turn my attention to heroes after my next project, which is Royal Guards. I have a lot of paints to buy before I can paint them all, though.

I still have plenty to paint like the elite snowtrooper squad (ugh. white) and the elite tusken raiders. I'm so jealous at people who have painted those already. I don't like (as much) painting the same figure over and over again. Then I have a primed Alliance Smuggler to paint which is something I'm really looking forward to.

Those are fantastic. They look so cool as a full squad of heroes, especially Verena and the Mon Calamari. I painted up Gideon (who I was playing) but I've been focusing on the baddies since we began a new campaign and I started playing as the Imperial :D

It might be the light, but your Gideon looks kinda scary. Like, undead scary :)

Heh, yeah. Gideon and Gaarkhan are the scariest if you look at their eyes. I painted Gideon last summer, I think. Way before Sorastro's excellent tutorial on him. Plus the primer left a really nasty gritty surface like Gideon had been attacked by thousands of bees. So, lots of trouble with that character. The eyes didn't come out right and it actually looks like Gideon has a scar on his left eye. And the dark was surrounding the white makes the eyes seem "glowy".

Hmm, zombie-Gideon. Might be thematic for Halloween. :D

Anyway, I'm happy to say that I've improved a little since then. Mak, Fenn, Loku and Verena are the latest heroes I've painted (in latest to oldest). Of the heroes Gideon, Jyn and Saska could use some retouching. I've been planning to buy the figures from people who've bought multiple core sets for skirmish so I can do a completely new repaint for Gideon and Jyn.

I'm not accurate enough with the brush to do eyes properly, and I don't think my eyes are up to it either. I've watched Sorastro painting features on characters i can't even resolve!

I like the trandoshans, with their nice big eyes. I just bought the Hired Guns pack and hope that they have huge eyes. Greedo does, so they should too, right? :)

Actually, has anyone painted those up? What colours did you use for the skin? He's a very greyish green in the film, but that could be the light in the cantina :)

I've painted hired guns. Rather than post them here again I'll just put a link to earlier page where they are.

You can use exactly the same methods and paints as with trandoshans for the skin. I looked rodians from the amazing world of Internet and found out that their skin color ranges from bluish-green to very earthy toned green. The different hues are easy to get with washes.

The jacket can be done much the same way as Diala's skin. Daemonette Hide and Mephiston Red mixed together for the base color, wash with Druchii Violet. Then the first highlights with Daemonette Hide with some Evil Sunz Scarlet mixed in. And for subsequent highlights add Emperor's Children to the mix. I liked highlighting the jacket. It was the best part of the miniature for me.

As for the eyes. The best advice I can give for them is to look how they are in the box art. Do the base color with Rhinox Hide and Abbadon Black mix, then the lighter parts with light brown and the glare with white. I found out that it works well. It might not be the best method to paint their eyes but I'm happy with the result.

I painted my Hired Guns recently and really liked how they turned out.

jh7JBNt.jpg

If I remember right, I did the eyes as Xereus Purple and gave them a gloss varnish after the protective spray. Of the things I've painted so far, they were by far the easiest to paint of anything's eyes and/or visors, because they kind of protrude a bit and don't have as heavy of a ridge around them as the Trandoshans. As for the skin, I used a base of Castellan Green, with a coat of Elysian Green over that, and washed with Biel Tan Green. They're quite a bit richer of a green than Greedo, but I see no reason Rodians can't have a range of skin tones.

I finished my Tusken squad. It's interesting (to me at least!) that they all look pretty similar considering that there are two groups of two figures with completely different base colours and wash. The central 2 in the pic were the second set painted and have the different colour scheme. I am not completely happy with them, and think in particular I should have used a darker colour than steel legion drab for the bandoliers.

Also worth remembering when painting tuskens that they're a tribe that lives in desert. I don't think they have perfectly uniform clothing and have gear and clothing that is tinted differently. So different shades just give character.

I think I have finished my Hired Guns. I was originally going to try to match Greedo's outfit but their clothes are significantly different enough from his that I decided to give them their own colour scheme. I am quite pleased with them. They also helped me win a game as the IP last night, and I am sure they rolled better as painted minis :D

I like how they are holding hands too :)

Finally branched out on my own; Hired Guns and six Rebel Troopers. I forgot to take a picture of them, so I'll try and remember to do so tomorrow.

I will admit that once I had finished the Sorastro tutorials I was scared to progress; so I took the brushes and went to work.

I tested the colour schemes on some spare GW sprues I had laying around.

All the while I imagined that soothing voice talking about basing the colours, applying the washes and working the highlights and I had to use the phrase '...now to really make it pop' at least twice. I also had to imagine the groovy music playing in the background whilst painting.

Thank you so very much Sorastro for making a rather ordinary flat coloured simple mix kind of hobby-ist into a slightly more confident and definitely better one.

I love to read about all the people that have jumped into the sea of miniature painting - welcome to a fun world.

Well I did a lot of research on miniature painting before I even started buying the supplies. Then I was trying to find affordable paints and other supplies to use for my painting. I even learned the hard way about using synthetic brushes with acrylic paints and have been letting others know when I can. I was scared as hell because I did not want to mess up the miniatures. I did not know that there was a safe way of painting using acrylic instead of enamel paint. I was worried that if I messed it up and used thinner for enamels the plastic would melt. I'm glad I learned about acrylics. So after seeing the painting guide on board game geek that a user posted on how he painted most of his imperial figures. I was trying to find a way to find as close to the colors needed for certain figures. Jyn, Dalia, Mak, and others. Now I can't determine what each different shade of blue or red is called. My brain is not wired that way. So I turned to reaper's power pallet. I submitted photos and it would give me as close to the color in reaper. I would then purchase reaper paints online and even used dakka dakka's conversion chart to purchase some colors in Vallejo. I used power pallet to find the colors for the rebel heroes which turned out great they look pretty close to the character art on their card. Then I ran into problems. First was the white of the stormtroopers. I had a hell of a time getting the white paint to go on decently to coat them well. So I kept going from them to others and back. this went on for a while and I realized I made a mess of them and needed to strip them and start over.

So I turned to the internet and searched for how to remove acrylic paint. I found all kinds of different answers including using brake fluid!!! Now I pretty much know to not do that because you have no idea what it might do the plastic. I tried simply green which did strip some off but not real effectively. I also had to redo a doom the board game expansion figure that I primed in not so warm weather and put too much primer on it. So I tested simply green and it did not work for me at all. So I found another solution and it was to use super clean. It really strips the paint off with ease and does not hurt the plastic. So I use that when I want to remove paint off of my miniatures. I striped the stormtroopers back down and re primed them. So I kept looking for a white paint to use and I found one. It is blick acrylic paint that I got from utretch art store. this stuff is great. it takes anywhere from 3 to 6 thin coats to coat a stormtrooper. So it took me some time and with the stormtrooper and twin shadow expansions. It took me some time to finish them. It was great to get them finished and not have to worry about them. So painting the royal guard was easy they are red. I used testors guards red gloss for their helmets but needed to find a red that would match it for the cloak. I searched again on google and I found it. A flat version of guards red form Italeri models. They make flat versions of some of testors gloss acrylic paint. So I used those on the royal guard and champion and they turned out great. I even used the 501st web page for the under clothes of the royal guard. The hands of the guard holding the pike are a burgundy color which reaper makes a burgundy wine color which was fantastic. that really helped me with that. So by this time I discovered sorastros painting videos on youtube. These are the greatest things since sliced bread. Started using those videos for the techniques and paint color list for the other miniatures that I will be painting. Such as han solo, IG-88 and others. It helped me immensely with technique and colors. I used the Vallejo and dakka conversion list to swap them for Vallejo colors because they are less expensive. I have purchased a few citadel colors for ones that I can't get a close match to in Vallejo. The ones that I have skipped were Gaarkan, Chewbacca, wookiee warriors, and the nexu. Because I have never painted fur before. So when I saw sorastros video on the wookiees and nexu I immediately started converting the paints over and purchasing them when I could. Using his videos the Chewie, and Gaarkan are complete. I have to finish the wookiee warriors. So when I finally got all the colors I needed for the nexu they were the last ones I needed to finish the core set. I proceeded to paint them and they turned out really good for someone that only started painting by hand once I got this game. Before that I used a rattle can to paint the car model bodies. That is when I was a teen. Painting with a brush like this is something I have never done and also 30 yrs later. So nothing like throwing yourself into the fire and skipping the frying pan all together.

I It was really scary at first and now it is a little easier. I still need to control how heavy I lay down a layer of paint, the steadiness of the brush and better dry brushing technique. Painting C-3PO was fun and nerve racking at the same time. I was trying to find a paint that would give me the golden chrome look like you saw in the movies when he was polished up. I again turned to google and was finding all these different ways but also seeing that they did not look like what I was looking for. I saw a video on youtube that there was this chrome paint they used on this plastic and then mixed the yellow top coat. There was one problem it looked like they were using a car air gun system which was A.) too expensive for the paint and B.) to much for the equipment. So I found some stuff that was a spray on type. You spray on the one stuff then sprayed on the activator which you see in that video it started creating chrome. Again too expensive and others just did not give the shiny chrome look. I finally found it! Alclad 2 chrome for plastics was what I needed. The stuff is great. I tested it on some scrap figure. It is a lacquer based paint and it looks amazing. How it works is you put a gloss coat of paint on, then you apply the chrome paint to the miniature. Then you apply a gloss coating to protect the chrome coat. After that dries and you need to give it a day to dry between each step. You apply the Yellow clear coat over that and it gives you the gold chrome look of C-3PO. So that scared me because I had to use an air brush and again just like brush painting I never did that before. It turned out great and I even made his lower right let chrome like the movies. I used the liquid masking fluid on that and his mid section. They turned out great and I hand painted his mid section.

I have quite a few to go to finish them. Hired guns, Boba Fett, and the other packs that I have not finished plus the expansions. Some parts are done and others are not. This is how I got into miniature painting all because of Imperial assault and Doom the board game. More IA because I made a deal with a guy. I did him a favor and we swapped the main board game figures for doom do I don't have to paint them just the expansion for it.

Finally branched out on my own; Hired Guns and six Rebel Troopers. I forgot to take a picture of them, so I'll try and remember to do so tomorrow.

Thank you TheEldarGuy! If I am any kind of teacher then it must be my ultimate goal to see followers of my tutorials reach the point where they are able to paint with confidence on their own - so I'm always immensely satisfied and happy to hear tales of success such as yours. (Incidentally, you won't have to imagine the groovy music playing once I release it as an album :) )

Amen to that aermet69!
