Sorastro's Painting

By Sorastro, in Imperial Assault Painting and Modification

Both as a bump and an actual question. For all you regular painters out there, do you ever just get totally unmotivated? I've been wanting to continue painting for a while, but when I actually find the time, I just can't bring myself to get up and do it. How do you help yourself when you get like this, is you do?

Been there while slaving away on the 77 Zombies of Black Plague ;)

It comes back after a while.

I've been working my way through a classic heroquest set. Finished twelve goblins (expansion content), working slowly on 12 skeletons... Kinda mundane and repetitive. But I always get keyed up just thinking about painting a unique/new mini. Not looking forward to doing my 15 stormies though, to be honest.

I wanted to post here and thank you Sorastro for your painting guides. And everyone else for sharing and providing inspiration. I'm completely new to miniature painting and gained the confidence from seeing everyone post their figures and from teachers like Sorastro posting tutorials.

I've almost made it through the base Imperial forces, here is what I've painted so far.

I've used Liquitex's basic paints ($25 for a set of 24 colors online) with some Matte Medium to thin the paints.

Thanks again everyone.

Well done!

Another interesting topic! I've found that painting is definitely a hobby that is easy to drift into and out of. In fact prior to my taking on this epic IA painting series I found that my interest and motivation would often bizarrely align with the seasons; heaven only knows why this might have been, but I always had a creative burst in the spring and then again in the autumn, and would often go for months in-between where I wouldn't pick up a brush.

Things are obviously different for me now, but a couple of things I find help motivate and get me into "the zone" include listening to some calming but atmospheric music - usually tied to the theme of the minis I'm painting; so whilst painting the Fury of Dracula minis for example I would have the "Bram Stoker's Dracula" album or some Lustmord playing along; this helps me enter a calm state of mind and also helps immerse me in the theme of the world the minis are set. I also agree with tomkat's suggestion; If you've got a daunting number of generic troops to paint (like the storm troopers) try painting in smaller batches of around three, then "reward" yourself by painting a hero! This also helps one appreciate the uniqueness and fresh challenges that a single-sculpt hero figure presents. Finally, I also find that planning an actual gaming session in which you will get to play with a fully-painted set in minis provides both a nice degree of motivation, as well as a deadline to aim for :)

Wow heychad! You've done an outstanding job on those, especially given that you're new to the hobby and that you're using such great-value paints but still able to produce such results!

I'm now in the editing stages of Episode 19 in which I'll finally be completing the base-set heroes! What an amazing ride this had been :)

I've painted a lot of Blood Bowl teams in the past years and I always lost interest in the team when I was 2/3 done. I think the main problem there, was that they had to be so uniform that I was just always doing the same over and over. Then I began supporting my BB painting with Descent. That allowed me to do various paint jobs and test out various techniques meanwhile. Usually a new cool mini gets me back to the table. Return to Hoth and the Bantha did that. Then I can usually get a couple extra minis done while I'm rolling :)

I'm having a hard time painting the human face especially after a long hiatus of painting. I have to relearn every thing and it takes several attempts to get something I'm happy with.

Hey All

I recently picked up Imperial Assault in part thanks to seeing some of the finished miniatures on line and in a few of Sorastro's Tutorials. So thanks to all those that publish their work online for inspiration and some handy tips.

I used to paint as a kid, although really badly and I have spent the last month painting the entire Core Box along with some boosters and just getting started on twin shadows.

Anyway, here are a few of my miniatures, I'll post more with some list of paints used, if that is of interest to anyone?

I know I sometimes get demotivated and do not paint in weeks or even months. I often start painting again when we start a campaign in IA. We play every Tuesday so I try to get a figure ready by then.

When I'm demotivated or feel like I want to paint but I have other things to do, I often paint just a part of the figure and then leave it be. For example, I'll paint the base colors or part of base colors on one day and continue the next day (or next week). Often when I get to the highlights I can't stop until the figure is done because the highlights really bring the figure to life and it's an awesome feeling to see the painted figure.

At the moment I've been painting the echo base troopers. It took me over a week (in calendar time) to paint the base colors and apply the washes. In total I think I've used maybe 4 hours on them but I've painted them over three evenings.

So I think getting demotivated from time to time is normal. Painting little at a time helps me get motivated again. I often play a Top Gear episode, documentary or some music on the background to keep track of time as well as to provide some nice white noise.

I have the same problem with Storm Troopers, I stupidly bought the extra blister pack, Kayne Somos and Twin Shadows and it really puts me off when I'm faced with all that white.

However I have come to a realisation that I don't really need to paint everything to the same quality, especially to a standard I'd personally be happy to photograph and publish on-line.

So I am powering through the uninspiring miniatures regardless of how iconic they might be, and and treating my self in between with miniatures such as R2D2, C3P0 or Boba Fett, which for me a least, are an absolute pleasure to paint keeping me motivated.

that moment when you realise that return to hoth is all white as well.....*cries*

Hi Sorastro. Any chance of a paints list for Mak? Would love to make sure I've got everything ready. Hoping to paint the last 3 heroes over the Easter Weekend.

Kindest Regards

Sure IronDan!

The first three tones are the colors I picked for Mak's green body suit, however I'm aware that they are colors that have yet to be used in the series:

>Waaagh! Flesh

>Warboss Green

>Skarsnik Green

If you wish to save some money you could easily get away with alternative colors that have been used before, such as Caliban Green, and Loren Forest which can then be lightened with some white. This will look absolutely fine, but might not give quite as close a match to the character art is all.

The only other previously-unused color is Moot Green; I believe the rest have been used at some point before in the series:

>Abaddon Black

>Mechanicus Standard Grey

>Leadbelcher

>Nuln Oil

>Rakarth Flesh

>Flayed One Flesh

>Flash Gitz Yellow

>Agrax Earthshade

>Druchii Violet

>Karak Stone

>White Scar

>Administratum Grey

>Eshin Grey

>Lamenters Yellow

>Waywatcher Green

>Coelia Greenshade

>Daemonette Hide

>Ironbreaker

>Moot Green

>Lahmian Medium

>'Ardcoat

I'm aiming to complete editing and composing around Friday/Saturday :)

Yep, picking that up next week!

Wonderful. Thank you Sorastro, I'll be sure to update my collection in time for the tutorial.

Thank you so much for all your hard work so far in this series. I'm really enjoying all your videos (not only the Imperial Assault)

Wooha! Nice work jonboyjon :)

I have to say this is one guide that I really found valuable for the paint references and cleaning techniques: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VAtgBLy5VEA

And here are my results, I still want to work on the window glow a bit to refine it, the main changes I made were to use some packing foam and Rhinox Hide paint to dab rust/chipped areas and then paint over 90% of those specks with Leadbelcher, now I just need to look at a shiny variant for General Weiss...

Watch a Sorastro Tutorial!!

And here are my results

Awww... she's been crying, poor little thing. Have those Rebels been stunning you and being too close so that you can't shoot them again? Those bullies!

(reminds me of red eyes and runny makeup ;))

(seriously though, looks great!)

Hah, Yeh I thought the same thing, but couldn't bring myself to change it. Too much effort :)

Whohoo! Finished Echo Base Troopers. And just in time for Mak. :)

These were both fun and annoying to paint. Annoying in the sense that they have a lot of narrow trimmings that take forever to highlight. Fun because there are different tones of white. I painted the jacket bluish-gray-white and the backpack and kneepads with white. Though in closeups photos the paintjob looks so unneat. From tabletop distance, the figures look fine.

And I still got a trio of snowtroopers to paint. Ugh...But before that, I think I'll reward myself with painting Mak.

Painting Snowtroopers also this weekend coming, good luck to your sir!
