Sorastro's Painting
My Snowtroopers. HATE painting white things. Still got Kayn, 4 Heavies, Leia, and 4 Echo troopers to do...
awesome SNOWIES.....serious.....i like the egg-white of the capes!
I'm curious what others' thoughts are regarding this, so I'll ask here, since it seems to be a high concentration of painters.
When painting the bantha, will you glue the head in before priming? or will you leave it out so the inside of the mouth can be painted with no hassle?
I'm considering priming the whole thing, then removing the head, masking the joint, and priming that, too. Then, I'll paint the mouth before gluing the head on. I guess if I need to putty it, I can then use brush-on primer for that joint before resuming painting.
Or is it the mouth not open enough to really bother with it? I'm conflicted. Not painting the mouth seems lazy. But if it can't be seen, then why bother?

For me:
1. Glue
2. Green stuff the gaps & sand
3. Prime
After the nexu my opinion is that the only thing the mouth needs is a basic purple or pink, wash, and hi lights localized to the tongue. Maybe some gloss coat after varnish to give a wet appearance.
After evaluating the figure the only thing I'm not going to assemble before primer is the base. I'm gonna prime the beast and base separate, taping off areas that need to be bonded. Maybe even Gonna paint the base with some of that mud stuff and paint it to look like sand before gluing it together.
I was thinking of going that route, too. Glue everything BUT the base... Should make it easier to get the mouth/underside. Are you guys going white, black, or other for the primer?

I think white. So S did wookies in black, nexu in white and Luke in white. The rider has a similar palette as Luke, and the beast has a similar palette to the wookies. So for me it's easier to darken white primer than lighten over black primer.
Since this thread seems to be the place to talk about painting in general, I'll ask here.
I'm painting the bases of my figures a neutral color (so far, Imperials on Mechanicus Standard Grey base) with the rim painted in bright primary/secondary colors to differentiate different groups -- like my Snowtroopers here:
Now I'm starting to work on minis for other factions, and I'm tempted to have a different color base for each faction, to make it easier to find the right minis in their storage. What do you think would be good other colors for Rebels and Mercenaries? I'm thinking two of the three of a fairly light beige (something like Screaming Skull, although maybe a bit darker), either a plain or dark brown (Steel Legion Drab or Rhinox Hide, for example), and light grey (like Celestra Grey).
What do you think? If I was just starting, I'd probably go black for Empire, plain brown for Mercs, and light grey for Rebels, but I'm far enough along (between my own painting and commissioning an acquaintance) on Empire that I don't want to redo the bases. But now I'm thinking either: dark grey (Empire), plain brown (Mercs), light grey (Rebels); or dark grey (Empire), dark brown (Mercs), light beige (Rebels).
Edited by LevetonI've been toying with the idea of painting the bases in a color that matches the palette of their deployment card faction. Scum - green, Rebs - red, Imps - purple or black

I'm doing:
Empire: Mechanicus Standard Grey
Mercs: Celestra Grey
Rebels: Zandri Dust (beige)
I've been using team covenant bases and activation tokens, so unless it's a non standard base I just use SMG. Big figures (nexu, at st, engineers) I've been using SMG with a red ring around the elites.
More heroes done.
Probably need to do a few more highlights actually - on the faces at least

Regarding bases. I've painted mine roughly by faction. Scum and Imperial have a Mechanicus Standard Gray base with colored rims to indicate the group. Elites always have a Mephiston Red rim.
For rebels, I wanted to try something different and painted a metallic bronze looking base.E.g. Verena:
For heroes I paint the entire base with the bronze mix and for others, I paint the rim with a color of the deployment group. I use roughly 50/50 mix of Balthazar Gold and Ironbreaker for the base. Depending on the basecoat I've used, I may need to tweak the ratio a bit to get the bases to look roughly the same for all figures. Gaarkhan (black basecolor) required more Ironbreaker in the mix and anything primed gray requires a lot more Balthazar Gold. Maybe 75/25 ratio of Gold to Ironbreaker.
I would have painted the base of the scum differently but I had already painted few and didn't want to redo them or break consistency so I've used same color as Imperials.
And lastly, for habitat units I've painted the base to look like the terrain they're "inhabiting". Snowy texture base for Wampas, tallarn sand base for Tusken Raiders.
To other topic, jonboyjon, nice work with the figures. I like how detailed you painted Saska's tablet. I was too lazy to bother with it. And seeing how good it looks with something on the screen I really wish I had painted something there too. Also, brilliant job with the goggles. The metallic frame makes them look much more interesting and detailed.
Nice work guys! I just received my bantha rider (WITH the head this time!); I haven't decided my approach to painting it yet but what an amazing sculpt it is

Awwww, and I was going to skip that figure. Now I'm tempted to go buy it. Especially since I got an e-mail from the store saying they have the Alliance Smuggler I preordered so I'm going there anyway.

I was going to attempt mine using the same methods you used on the wookiees for the fur. Would that be a good starting point?

Hey Rogue! Absolutely; dry brushing and washes has to be the way to go

Would you glue everything together before or after painting?
Painting the mouth seems like it would be way easier to do if you take the face off first. Same with the Tusken on top...
nice snowies!
so I tried making my own wet palette using a small Tupperware container, papertowels, and some parchment paper I swiped from my wife's baking supplies. I honestly have to kick myself for not using one sooner! One of the major problems I have painting (aside from my own crude skill level) is having to stop for 15 minutes to an hour plus because my 1.5 year old wants my attention. If/when I do get back to painting I often have to start all over again pouring and mixing paint. Last night while working on Gaarkhan and Verana, my daughter wanted to play so I washed my brushes and put the wet palette in the fridge. I wasn't able to paint again until I got up from bed early this morning and finished a few more highlights. The paint was still good to go! I highly recommend trying one out especially if you can't devote a large amount of time at once for painting! You could buy one but these things are so **** cheap to make what's the point?
Since everyone else is posting their painted figures on here i may as well join the club.
Here are my painted miniatures (so far)

MHD-19 (I'm really pleased with how he turned out) and C-3PO (does he need a brown wash?)
Hi all, some great work on here and I'd like to echo my various sentiments about your videos, Sorastro; they are very inspiring. All this has tempted me to have a crack at painting my own figures - although I will admit to being hesitant about getting into another potentially expensive hobby!
I have some easy questions regarding primers though. Firstly, roughly how many miniatures could I expect a 400ml spray (like the Army Painter primers) to cover? Would it do the core and all the expansions and figure packs or would I run out and need a second or even third can before then? Secondly, if you had to choose only one primer colour, would you go for white (because 20+ Stormtroopers) or grey (because good base colour for vehicles)?

Thank you DraconianOne! Regarding your primer question; at a guess I reckon you could prime all of the IA figures with one can. There's not much in it but I'd probably go for white, but that's as much personal preference as anything
