Sorastro's Painting

By Sorastro, in Imperial Assault Painting and Modification

I used all the reds you suggested.

I still found him a bit red so I used Cassendora Yellow shade on him. Wow what a pop. Sudden transformation of red to orange.

this! this is the info i was hoping for!

Painting the Trandoshan Hunters now, and they're taking a super long time! Getting under their arms and to parts of the mini accurately has been challenging. I'm making up for it by freestyling some camo colors but... whew. No other figure has been this challenging and time consuming.

Hello Sorastro, I was wondering if you use a Magnifier Desk Lamp or any magnifier when you paint and if so what kind?

Hi Boomer! I think I may have already answered to you on Facebook but just in case (and for anyone else who may be wondering): I don't use a magnifying lamp (yet!) but I'm sure I'll need one at some point.. :)

Might I just add that my thread notifications have been a bit inconsistent lately and I've only just seen how much amazing work you guys have been sharing here! Elrath, Roguelieutenant, and Feltmonkey - just absolutely stunning work all round! I know as well as anyone how even good painting can look so much worse when photographed and blown up, but this thread is just bursting with incredible pieces that hold up beautifully!

Elrath - I'm both honoured and humbled to see some of my ideas/recipes being transposed and used so imaginatively! Your Loku, and those droids in particular are just superb. You'll have to forgive me if I use some of your recipes when I get round to painting them! As the jazz trumpeter Clark Terry said of the creative cycle: "imitate, assimilate, innovate", and boy are you innovating :)

Happy painting indeed!

You are really bringing them to life, I love your work

Thank you. I'd be honored to see you use my recipes (feels like a too kind word for my flailing around and repeated trial and error). I often end up trying colors and then ending up using washes to fine tune the color and then highlighting again...it's a miracle the figures end up looking like they do.

The HK droids are pretty easy figures to paint or at least they don't have any hard to reach gaps. In case anyone's interested on the colors:

Non-elites: Primed black, basecoated of Leadbelcher, drybrushed with Necron compound and then applied the washes. I painted eyes white and used a wash to get the color I wanted (Fuegan Orange). I've found white and glazes to be a good and lazy way to paint small colored lights.

Elites: Primed black, basecoated roughly 2-1 Jokaero Orange - Mephiston Red (My Mephiston Red is all chunky so it's hard to give good ratios). I washed with Agrax Earthshade but the details on the knee and "calves" need more shadows so Nuln Oil at least on those parts might be good. For highlights I mixed in some Fire Dragon bright and Wild Rider Red into the original basecoat mix and applied that adding more and more Fire Dragon Bright for further layers. Finally I also added a small bit of Yriel Yellow as I struggled to get a shiny look (which I failed). The droid also looked too reddish so I washed it with Seraphim Sepia. It helped to tune down the colors a bit. I then painted the eyes white and washed with Bloodletter. And then I painted the scratches on the droid just like Sorastro demonstrated the technique on Boba Fett's armor. And that gave me the idea to try that Screaming Skull-Lahmian Medium wash for the droid. Just have to be really, really careful not to let this pool anywhere.

EDIT: Actually, it might be best to use this wash only on the scratches to dim them and not on the whole figure as it takes away some of the shine. But it does give the figure a more battle-worn look.

I was wondering about that. I have been afraid of posting pictures of my miniatures for this very reason. I’m so proud of my work then I take a picture of it and hate it. All you guys work look so sharp even in close up shots. Perhaps with time and practice I will get better and gain more confidence. Thank you all for the inspiration and giving me a goal to aspire to.

Heh, I feel exactly like that when I see other people's figures. I'm always thinking "Oh those colors look so good. He nailed the contrast. Oh, he painted that detail that I was too lazy to do. It looks so much better than mine."

I also love seeing how creative people are in doing different color schemes and all. It's made me less nervous in trying out different colors and not care too strongly if the color I've chosen doesn't exactly match the card art.

I am trying to pluck up the courage to paint Vader orange just for the trolls.

I feel a great disturbance in the Force, as if millions of voices cried out in nerd-rage...

Where was this inspiration BEFORE I painted my Vader!

As a bump.

I painted one of my hired guns figures:

It was a fun figure to paint and I could combine many of the techniques in Sorastro's videos. I painted the skin pretty much exactly like the trandoshan skin, the jacket like Diala's skin, pants like Diala's pants, belt like the many belts on various heroes etc. From a painting perspective, I can't recommend these figures enough. The jacket has wrinkles which makes it look really good when highlighted.

I think I'm going to try a different color scheme with the other hired gun. And I'm looking forward to the future Sorastro's guide on these guys and how to paint the shiny glossy eyes which I found to be the trickiest part. For some reason, they look pretty good in that photo but the white dots look a bit too large when viewing the figure in real life. I may have to do some retouching. And the shoulder pad. I just painted it red even though in the box art, it has a purple base with a red canvas over it. But I couldn't see any lines in the mold like that so I took a lazier route.

Nice work Elrath.

Beautiful work as usual Elrath!

It's been a while since I last shared a shot of one of my own, so here's Fenn (Episode 18 is now live):

Just one more base-set hero to go!

nice!!

Sorastro has made a new tutorial, I have added a new column to the cheat sheet.

Imperial Assault Painting Guide

So let it be written. So let it be done.

stormies!!!....yes, Yes, YES!

My Diala came out pretty well, I think. I need to lean into the shading more. I see that bright pink on my palette and I'm worried that it'll be too bright. But the parts I shaded the most came out the best. I did her saber green at the request of the guy in my campaign that uses her, and I'm a firm supporter of giving the people what they want. I need to lighten and shine it, but I like the shade I mixed.

The Trandoshan Hunters took me way, WAY longer than I thought. They're easily the figures I've spent the most time on individually which means the set took FOREVER. That said, I'm happy with the results even if their hidden underarm area is a disaster.

Hi Nick! The votes are still coming in but it looks like it will almost certainly be Mak :)

Yaaay

Ooh, Mak is going to be such an awesome figure to paint. His skin tone is something I don't really know how to paint properly. Plus he has that visor which gives an extra layer of challenge. So I'm definitely going to wait for that tutorial.

In the meantime, I finished my other Hired Gun. Here's a comparison shot of the two:

hired_guns_back.jpg

The greener one was painted much the same way as the other one. I used Waaagh Green instead of Castellan Green as the base but it hardly matters. What gives the skin the greener tone is Biel-tan Green wash instead of Athonian Camoshade. I ten applied Skarsnik Green on the most prominent edges for more contrast. Sorastro covered the techniques I used here in his Trandoshan video (even both washes). I like the skin tone of the left hired gun more but I did a better job on the eyes and jacket of the right hired gun.

I also painted General Sorin and his toy tank:

Okay, so the tank comes with Return to Hoth expansion and Sorin is a separate expansion but his character works with them.
general_sorin.jpg

Tank I painted much the same way as the AT-ST (thank you Sorastro for that tutorial!). Only, I first put it together (no glue!), primed it, took it apart and painted the parts separately before putting it back together with glue and varnishing.

I should really get started on Fenn as our campaign just ended and we might start a new one soon and there's a risk we're going to need him. I'd also get to post something that was painted following Sorastro's tutorials.

And I'm done hijacking this thread for now. Sorry about it. :)

nice werk!
