Sorastro's Painting

This fell off the front page. I'm not okay with this

Lol Ducks :) Let's at least accompany a shameless bump with a new pic:

So glad you done some ambient lighting from the sabre. Looks terrific. Hopefully the video or a paint list is uploaded in time for the weekend so I can make a paint shop.

Thanks Muzz! If I don't get the video finished by the weekend I can cetainly get a paint list out so you can do some shopping :)

Sorastro...I know you mentioned it on one of your videos (Vader I think)...exactly what bases are you using for your unique Characters? I am not a modeler, so your painting guides are awesome, but I picked up some 25mm bases at GenCon but am not sure I want to use them...and I can't seem to find the "right ones" I want.

Thanks!

Hi Tantive. Here's a link to the "Tech" bases I'm using. They come in sets of 5 (randomized from the set you've chosen). I've just ordered a load more myself, including some cool-looking " Trash " and " Scrapyard " bases which might come in handy for some of the more seedy villains... ;)

A. Holly crap that slightly out of focus Diala looks fantastic

B. I didn't include new pictures because I'm coming up with excuses not to figure out greenstuff and I'm about to go on vacation.

C. My reason for not rebasing figures is so sad. The organizer I use for IA is very tight on space and those look a bit thicker than the existing base, so I'm afraid they won't fit. Which is killing me a little inside. I'm tempted to do the clear bases in your zombie videos though... Would your reinforcement technique work on that or be too obvious?

Hmm I haven't tried it actually.. I'm not sure if the Litko bases are too brittle to drill in to without splitting but I'd be happy to give it a go (I do love the look of them). I'll get back to you once I've tried it :)

Oh man, Diala looks so good I can't even see straight!!

Better finish up my wookiees, (dang family vacation getting in the way...)AND repair my raccoon eyes on Jyn.

Thanks Sorastro! Reading the thread gave me motivation to order some green stuff, tools, and a few new brushes. I stopped "painting" my figures as I ran into some with obvious gaps (Chewie was really bad).

I look forward to giving it a go again!

Thanks! Those were exactly what I was looking for...I was also in search of some bases for my Infinity models...although I have to admit those have been sitting primed for a long while, as I'm afraid to attempt to "paint" them.

Love these videos. Just what I need to kick start my SWIA painting again.

Sorastro, your work is an inspiration. I love watching your youtube videos. I know I will never reach the level of work you produce (an issue of time, money and skill) but I hope to try my hand at painting miniatures. I am gripped by fear at the idea of ruining my IA miniatures, do you have a recommendation on a cheaper mini to practice on? Also, perhaps some less expensive but acceptable paints for a beginner?

Again, your work is absolutely impeccable! The amount of thought you put into each paint job is staggering.

Hi samurai! I guess you could practice any old plastic figure (some cheap kids soldiers or something?). I'm not especially knowledgeable about different paint ranges but you might want to look at the cost of Vallejo paints; they're comparable to Citadel in terms of quality (although both ranges have certain strengths) but a fair bit cheaper :)

Consider this set: http://www.amazon.com/Army-Painter-Mega-Paint-Set/dp/B00HC9YNZU/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1440802185&sr=8-1&keywords=Army-Painter-Mega-Paint-Set

It has a good selection of all the main colors + metallics + VERY GOOD ink washes (Dark Tone equals Nuln Oil, etc) + a couple brushes + a painting guide. Cheaper than Citadel and you get more. They are a bit transparent, like Citadels layer range, which is good for layering, but bit of a headache if you want easy coverage. Which means you generally don't want to paint them over black primer. So use white or gray primer with those.

Actually, probably wouldn't hurt to buy a single "Ceramite White" pot from Citadel anyways in addition to that set, as it's heavily pigmented and opaque white. Your Stormtroopers will thank you.

Hi Sorastro! Any chance you had that paint list for Diala kickin around? :)

Mr. Sorastro:

After buying SW:IA to play with my dad and brother, I stumbled across your videos on painting and was immediately intrigued. Although I'm a lifelong nerd, I've never painted a miniature in my life. But, I decided that now would be as good a time as any to have a go. I would like you to know that my dad and I are now nearly entirely consumed by the dark obsession that is miniatures painting. We've purchased and utilized an embarrassing amount of painting supplies, gadgets, and other tools in an alarmingly short amount of time in order to complete our figures. Your videos provided the initial nudge to get us started, and a subsequent springboard that's served to inspire us to use new techniques in painting the figures, as well as going over a few we'd already done.

In sum, I would like you to know that I hold you solely responsible for mine and my father's newest addiction, that it has caused two grown men to behave like delighted boys, and that it's been absolutely brilliant. We are incredibly grateful for what you do and hope some day to produce figures that look a bit more like yours. Though, you've already helped us produce figures that are considerably less shameful than our first batch of stormtroopers.

All the best in your endeavours, and your Patreon campaign. Thank you, Again.

My son and I have both started painting minis of various kinds because of this thread. My son (19 yrs) prefers Vallejo and Reaper and I prefer Citadel (mostly), but as our FLGS states it all comes down to personal preference.

Hi Sorastro! Any chance you had that paint list for Diala kickin around? :)

Yup, then I can make a visit between my trips to the lab this morning and evening.

Hi folks! I put the list up on the Patreon site a little while ago :)

Sent the missus to the store as I'll be working for most of the weekend.

Just a heads up to anyone wanting to paint Diala ASAP. Games Workshop, or at least my local one, don't keep edge paints in store so they will have to order that in. So it would be worth your time to get it ordered in advance of the next video release.

Thank you kind sir! I will be going in a bit to grab the three I'm missing...

In the meantime I won £200 at the bookies having randomly decided to give it a go. So I've ordered in the next wave and all of the Battlelore expansions (which would be an excellent choice for another video series given the sheer amount of minis).

For general info, the "Edge" paints are GW only. You have to get them from a Games Workshop store or from their mail order. Local hobby stores that carry their line do not count. They won't sell to them. Has to be a GW store, and according to Muz333, not even all of them carry them all the time. Crappy.

I have drilled into Litko bases successfully. I've put all four Trandoshans and Jyn on their 25 mm bases with the same paper clip support as shown in the video. I suppose there is a risk of breaking them, but I have had no issues yet. Just be sure to support them well while drilling, but be careful not to put a hole in your own finger. I like to watch the depth of the bit through the side while I'm drilling. They are a harder material than the SWIA minis, so the drilling will be slower.

I also bought two of their 50 mm bases for the Nexu and have mounted them. I will put the wookies on a Litko base when I finish painting them.

I also grabbed some orange bases to try on elite units because I didn't know how to tackle marking them with a clear base.

An alternative to the Edge paint "Baharroth Blue" is "Skink Blue" from their Dry range, but you have to re-liquefy it yourself (see video below, 8:50). It's the exact same pigment, only drier.

PSA: Edge are the same as Dry.
