Well, you are partially responsible for getting me back in the painting-game
I was an avid 40k (GW) painter in the past but gave it up, maby ten years ago.
But I bought Star Wars: Edge of the Empire.
Then I really liked the game and ordered all the sourcebooks.
And then I started thinking about getting some minis to represent players and enemies on the maps.
So I started looking for old WotC minis, but there were none available near me (Sweden).
So I started looking at Imperial Assault for the minis.
And I saw that they were unpainted and kinda shrugged away, but then I started watching your videos and remembered that I actually know how to paint (OMG, that totally came off like an "unlike you", but that's not at all what I mean, just that your videos reminded me that I not only know the basics, but also reminded me that I used to like it) and all I needed was some paint and a brush.
Of course, I ended up having to buy one of the citadel starter kits since the shop didn't have any standard brushes and were out of base white, base black and base red colours.
Still, I now have the 13 colours in the starter pack, a decent brush, a can of white base spray and a can of varnish and a bottle of plastic glue for good effort.
Now I'm just going out to the local "hobby and crafts" store to see if they have some cheap brushes for highlighting/mixing and a plastic mixing tray.
Sorastro's Painting
Thanks for all the recent comments folks! I'm on holiday at the moment so can't reply as frequently as I might like, but am enjoying the speculation surrounding the next video; I see some of you spotted some quite subtle potential spoilers
Hey Sorastro, I filled your questionnaire with the obvious answer; but I'll kindly ask you something. Whichever other figure series you begin painting, please choose something that is widely accessible (as IA is).
Btw, I logged in Patreon the first time today and it's a great way to generate some funds. If everyone contributed something small, it would build up very fast.

Thank you so much Gecimen! You have a very good point about accessibility; I think judging by the last time I checked the survey responses I'll be painting stuff that is widely available
Sorastro,
I just wanted to say thanks for all your hard work producing these incredible videos. I seldom comment but have been following for some time now. Your talents and hard work are greatly appreciated. Also, I am now a patreon of your videos.

I don't see an option to upload an image so here is my progress thus far. Thanks Sorastro!
Just got the paints for the last two videos and some green stuff to give it a go. Guess I won't be able to paint them tonight if the green stuff needs to be left overnight to cure.
Also, does anyone know of any good paint racks for the Citadel paints? I had been eyeing one up on Amazon that is out of stock now. I currently have 60 tubs of paint and no way to order them!

60!?!?!?!
Well ****, I painted most of my youth and I never got over 20, I think.
I picked up some nail polish racks, they hold about 45 to 60 paints depending on the type I have 5 of them, for Game colour, and 2 for air brush pait, The 5th is for all the extra tems. I found them on ebay and they should be available in most coutries locally.
Something like this

I blame Sorastro. This isn't quite all of the paints from his tutorial videos either. It's most of them but not all. On the plus side the box for the Camel up expansion I got in town today serves temporary as a paint rack. They can be stacked on top of one another too.
Edited by Muz333Well, now that i have a job, I suppose I could afford more paints...
Here's what I use to store all my paints, brushes and modeling tools:

Perfect. These seem to be obtainable in the UK for a good price. I ordered a couple of them for now, if anyone else in the UK is wondering what they're like I can update after.

I have about 60 paints too. I use two large sorting boxes from a local shop that sells tools, electronics etc.: http://images.clasohlson.com/medias/sys_master/8872251621406.jpg
My options are somewhat limited here in Finland but I've found those sorting boxes to be good enough. I have white, gray, black, brown and metallic paints in one box and colored paints and washes in another. The plus side on the sort boxes is that they can be stacked and are easy to store. The negative side is that when a box is laying on the table, I'm sitting down and I need some paint, I often need to go through a few of them before I find what I want even though I remember pretty well what paint I have where.
Started and almost finished Chewie and Gaarkhan last night. Really impressed with how Chewie is coming out and can't wait to add the finishing touches tomorrow night as tonight is game night.
Thanks again for these videos, I'm still in awe what a complete beginner can achieve with them.

Thanks mate! I'm always happy (and somewhat relieved!) to hear that success has been had following my guides

Wow! VERY nice work there Hatefist! Love that board you've got them on too

Thank you so much! (Your posts seem to have only just popped through so sorry for not replying sooner!)
I finally finished Jyn and Gideon. And the Witcher figures. I'm sure Gideon would have been better after seeing you paint it, Sorastro, but I since I had it primed, I felt like I had to paint it. Despite the rough priming, it looks better like this than unpainted at least.
(And I somehow messed up Yarpen's appearance and painted him bald but I'll fix it.)
So, thank you Can't wait to start painting Gaarkhan.
Thank you again Sorastro for this last tutorial. Having a lot of fun with the wookiees
Really liking your lesson on how to re-base as well. Using it on the wookiees for their swampy bases. Will post when finished!
Hey Sorastro, I know preparing the videos take a lot of time. Now that Twin Shadows is coming out and loads of new content is announced, I thought maybe you want to choose not to make the same length movies for all the remaining characters. With our current knowledge (that we got by following your tutorials) we can paint characters such as Fenn, Han Solo, Weiss, RGC, Saboteurs and perhaps IG88, only maybe if you posted a final photo and wrote the paints you used.
Next month you will have 8 extra different figures to paint, and with the one figure per month speed, we'll be way behind the release speed of FFG. So maybe you want to pick the hardest ones of the bunch for tutorials. For example we shall really need the tutorials for Boba Fett, C3PO or Tuskens.
Alternatively we can just work him like a dog and demand he keeps up the high quality videos at four times the pace at the expense of his sleep, family and work life?
I mean, just an idea...

Thanks for the useful suggestions; this is an issue I'm quite mindful of and was planning to address in the next release, but since you've raised it I'm happy to share my thoughts here. I'm going to use bullet points to be succinct:
- Covering one figure per month ain't gonna cut it!
- We certainly don't need half-hour epics for every figure, and I anticipate producing some pretty short guides for figures that re-use techniques and colours already covered in the series. (I do need to be careful here that I don't short-change my Patreon supporters though; it may be that I release alternate shorter videos as "free" releases say.)
- I've decided NOT to be a slave to the release order, which will allow me to hit the big new releases as soon as they're out, and chip away at the remaining base-set figures as and when.
- Now that I've refined my workflow somewhat and have some time off work over the summer (although I've got family holidays scheduled as well) I will be pushing out more content to help get caught up. (I've managed to film, narrate and half-way edit Episode 12 in just the last three days!)
I hope this sounds like a good way forward!
Sorastro.

Some of my thoughts:
Fenn, Mak, Gideon, and Luke seems MOSTLY straightforward to me, so basic stuff like their clothes probably don't need full feature treatments. Just show the paints and a few seconds of painting and I think all that could be covered in a few minutes. But each of those figures might have some aspect that needs more time to look at. For example Fenn's and Gideon's Rebel symbols on their shoulders (if you plan to paint them at all). Mak's face and eye-piece and Gideons dark skin tone are other examples we need to spend more time at. Luke's... blond hair? I don't know, Luke seems the simplest.
And if the videos are still are too short, start painting them in pairs or groups like you did with the Wookiees. If you do the Rebel symbols on Fenn's and Gideon's shoulders, those two would make a good pair in a single video.
Diala needs a full video just for herself though.
I think some videos could be grouped together and knocked off quickly. I don't foresee the heavy stormtroopers, alternate sculpt stormtroopers and Kayn the Stormtrooper commander being much, if at all, different from the first episode.
That said a balance would need to be struck for the other figures. I'm okay for speeding things up and releasing more videos at the expense of shortening some steps. However if they were overly succinct I may feel that I'd struggle to recreate your own painting. Something that might cause your Patreons to hesitate on their pledges.
None the less, I have faith in you and am sure you will reach a good solution.
