Sorastro's Painting

By Sorastro, in Imperial Assault Painting and Modification

I keep having the same recurring nightmare-

"No more training do you require...

Already know you, that what you need..."

I really don't feel like a Jedi yet!!

Lol Jerbiwan :) I am sorry it's taking so long to get Episode 10 out.. I've been so busy lately, I just don't know where the time goes! Rest assured it's on it's way.. Let's aim for next weekend :)

Whew!

Really its ok! Just my paranoia... :)

When you say next weekend, that's like British time zone code words for tonight right? ;)

Lol! I'm afraid not :)

I am thinking of doing some slightly shorter edits for the other heroes though, as I'm keen to get through them and I don't think as much explaination is needed for techniques already covered in the series. (I've actually already started filming Episode 11 too which should be a fairly quick one..)

I think that's the thing that I enjoy the most is simply learning techniques. I've been able to apply these elsewhere. I've painted Gaarkhan my rebel troopers and Royal Guard Champ. Gonna move to Sabs next.

Let's aim for next weekend :)

You know what, why not make it just after the weekend. Say the Tuesday morning.

Which has nothing to do with the fact I'll be away at a music festival down in Donnington for the week or anything. Or that I'd be jealous if others got to see the next video before me. I just want you to take your time, that's all... :P

The trandos are taking me forever... I just need to do the skin for the most part, but these guys take forever.

Granted, I haven't worked on them in a few days.

I just bought all the ally and villain packs this week. How am I supposed to know how to paint them?!? :-D

In all seriousness I really admire your work - I was against getting Imperial Assault at all because I have an aversion to painting figures but after watching your videos I've purchased the game and am enjoying the prep work before painting.

Thank you for your contribution to this community.

Thanks a lot Maho! Although they take a lot of hours to produce I do really love working on the videos. The positive feedback really helps with the motivation too though. Rest assured I'll be covering all the allies and villains once I'm through the base set :) *Goes back to editing Episode 10*

Is there a way to properly and evenly spray base paint the miniatures? I find it that I either oversaturate the miniature with spray base paint (looking at the end part of darth vader's lightsaber that has a collection of paint that resembles a tear drop about to fall) or I've even moderate coverage, but it doesn't hit every single nook or cranny of the miniature. I need to find out once and for all how do people manage to spray paint their miniatures so that it literally looks like they submerged them in base paint and let them dry.

Thanks in advance.

I do light coats and let it dry before continuing. Takes longer, but ensures the results you want.

Guys, he's probably too modest to post it here, so I will...

Throw the man some bucks per episode. His stuff is just way past good enough for that...

Well said. Easy sign up too!

Waaaaait, he does the soundtracks too?

Pledged.

So how does this site work. Do I pledge an amount of money as a one off, every month or every episode?

You enter your paypal or credit card info, and the site automatically charges you every time Sorastro releases an episode. The beauty of Patreon is that you pay only for content. It motivates the creator to make stuff more regularly (as in, no content, no money). And if he starts releasing BS videos just for the money, you can cancel your support any time. (Not that Sorastro would do something like that, I'm talking about Patreon in general and why I think it's pretty great.)

Thanks a lot! I didn't want to take advantage of my "pinned" status here for the purposes of self promotion but am quite OK with you doing it for me :)

The Patreon idea was suggested to me by a fan on my Facebook page and after looking into it, it does seem to make good sense. As the videos I produce are relatively niche (plus my subscriber base is still pretty small) they earn me virtually no money through advertising on YouTube. I haven't timed myself, but I'd estimate that each episode takes very roughly 40 hours to create - give or take - which is a bit like a full-week's work (although it's very rewarding work).

Now I'm not generally a financially-motivated type (or I certainly wouldn't have picked teaching as a profession!) yet the kind of crowd-funding system that Patreon provides does make it that much more possible for creators to turn a sideline into a full-time occupation. Now I know this isn't going to happen, but just for the purposes of illustration: If each subscriber to the channel pledged just $1 I would be able to afford to quit my job and produce these videos full time . That would mean I could produce at least one new video each week , covering miniatures from a wider range of games (Descent 2nd edition etc.) It would be a dream come true. Simply to be able to make a living doing what I love.

I'm not naive however, and I have no idea how close I'm going to get to making that dream a reality, but I do believe that life's too short not to at least go for it. At least I will be able to rest knowing that I gave it my best shot :)

Interesting. I had to sign up for the cheapest option for now. As a poor PhD student I can't afford more significant amounts of money to come out at random time intervals. However I can reassess this later.

Thank you Muzz! Don't forget you can cap your monthly level of support so it never has to go over a set amount (also be aware that it's only full tutorial videos - and not things like the introduction video I put out yesterday - that pledges will pay towards). The beauty of the crowd-funding mechanic of course is that it only requires a very small commitment from each supporter, and I'm extremely grateful for each pledge - regardless of the amount.

I started work on my ATST yesterday and I feel like I went a little overboard with the Typhus Corrosion . Whats the best way to tone down the bit thats on the side. Im really not sure what to do other than redoing that whole side. My other thought is to go around the model and add more grunge to it so the side area doesnt stand out so much. Thoughts on this?

I just realised, the charges will only come out at the first of each month. Knowing that I've upped my pledge and limit.

My take on that is when you add more, you run the risk of having too much going on. Your choice, that's just my two cents

Well, considering how much money I've sent over to Citadel I figure I can send the man who's tricking me into sending them cash a few bucks here or there.

That little intro video popped up in my subscription and I got all hopeful for episode 10. I demand a hint for my dashed hopes (well, not really, but I would still love a hint!)

Lol and massive thanks (and to you too Muzz). I have actually already given a pretty large (although slightly out-of-focus) spoiler if you look closely :)
