Stupid weapons weights

By amuller93, in Only War Game Masters

well talking weights the missile launcher weighs 30kg and the missiles themselves weight .5kg

That's the same wight as the grenades.

Hahah, you're right - a frag missile does more damage, more pen, and has a greater blast radius than a frag grenade, AND includes a rocket motor with propellant, yet has exactly the same weight!

Unfortunately, here GW's Inquisitor game is similarly weird by having missiles and grenades share the same weight, but at least they also have the exact same effects (in fact, they were lazy and just gave them shared profiles).

Not gonna speak to the realism of any weights, but in terms of players utilizing the heavy stuff in combat, they should be training the Athletics skill to make use of Heft. An Inspired guardsman with decent SB+TB can net 11-22kg carry weight for a combat if they manage a good Athletics check. For those with a Strength aptitude, this can be trivial. The Heavy Gunner has a double aptitude for Toughness advances to increase his time to fatigue when carrying over capacity.

Yeah the weight's actually not a huge problem if you're willing to invest in your character's ability to carry things, or get their agility high enough that it's not a big deal being encumbered.

I have felt the pain on both sides of the table, as a heavy gunner you end up sacrificing a lot to carry along some of the bigger heavy weapons, but on the GM side not enforcing the weight rules you end up with players carrying a heavy bolter, a heavy stubber, and a lasgun. I personally see it as keeping your player from being the equivalent of Sergeant Harker right out the gate. I feel like the heavy gunner does have a certain lack of ability to run around with the huge weapons right away, especially if using the suggested generation of random rolls for stats. What I've done as the GM is made the players roll the random dice, with the allowed re-roll, and then assign the random stats where they want them. It keeps the randomness of the stats in place, but still allows players to assign stats to fit the character they imagine, so if your heavy weapons guy wants to run around with a heavy stubber or a heavy bolter right away they can put their best numbers into the strength category and go with it. It's worked out pretty well for me since my heavy weapons player has always been able to carry 60+ kg per game easily that way and usually hauled around a missile launcher and a lasgun plus the ammo for both.

^ I consider that one of the best options for chargen, anyways - simply because I believe that in most cases, a character's role should be mirrored in their characteristics, too. For example, someone who doesn't have a good BS will probably not be handed a sniper rifle (although there are circumstances where you could come up with a cop-out, depending on the regiment's homeworld), and certainly a progena student would not become a Commissar if they've got crappy Willpower. Same for a heavy weapons team where someone may have difficulty carrying their gear.

Random rolls with custom assignment is, to me, an ideal compromise between the stats feeling "natural", and a representation of the character's background.

Agreed.

I have always pictured things like the multi melta, plasma cannon and heavy flamer (if they are man portable in any real sense) being used like some world war 2 flame throwers with on carrying the weapon and the other carrying the ammo and them being physically teathered together with hoses.

For me the Melta gun I like the idea of it being used like this http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-c0evfMVRI_w/TwDW8D2_AaI/AAAAAAAAARU/lQ2_tI0iqPo/s1600/Cadianplasmameltamain_445x319.jpg%C2' > but there might be lighter ones around that are more portable but less powerful perhaps, for me therefore 15kg sounds okay but I imagin gunners not really carrying anything else much beyond their weapon.

Currently my Sergeant on Skyrnne is porting around a Heavy Bolter, Lascannon and Missile Launcher through the magic of having 5 comrades (Thank you, Commander specialism). They were all deemed mission critical, and the HB is a heavily modified favoured weapon so, it pretty much worked out that if I want to use one of the Heavy Weapons being carried by my comrade, I need to go to the comrade, have him take it off, take it from him, then equip it, and then brace it, before I can begin aiming and firing. Makes roleplay sense, and help balance it out. Still encumbered as all hell, but it's working for me.

Also feels very much Command HQ squad (from the TT game) to me.

Jones! Fetch me my missile launcher- no wait, belay that order! Bring the lascannon instead, those traitor dreadnoughts are tough!

Somehow that reminds me of this

That was kinda the concept for a Dark heresy character of mine. A Slaaneshi void pirate with a fetish for difrent types of pistols: Bolt pistol, autopistol, stubber, hand flamer, needle pistol, Inferno pistol, Plasma pistol, etc...

"Bosun."

"Aye Captain!?"

"Fetch me my pistol."

"Which one, Captain?"

"...Hrm...Flamer. I want to hear his screams. Exquisite..."

Well, doesn't the weapon spec's got a buddy talent that is basically this? your friend is hauling all of your guns and it only takes a free action to switch form plasma to melta to lasgun to grenade launcher!

Only for 200 xp as well.....who said the life of a guardsman is hard? You get your own gun caddy!

It really fits with those "noble born" regiments.

What? Carry my own lasgun like a commoner? That's what gun caddies are for good sir!

I say! Winthorp? Fetch me my lasgun would you? No. The "parade" one, with the silver housing and ruby inlaid kill markings. The other two are used for live firing you see, horrid utilitarian things you know. And actual combat is such a drag. Those **** green natives refusing to go down after the first volley. **** unsportsmanlike If you ask me!

What? Oh the second live firing las? That's the one i use for when we are more at range, diffrent nalwood stock, crystal lensed scope- It's my hunting model you see. Nothing like a good hunt on the ol' family domain, I say!

The nobility has alwas been good hunters you know. Ahh, the refined arts of the hunt, how diffrent it is from this nosiome, smelly battlefield! **** commoners screaming and hollering just because they got a bit of shrapnell in their legs. Bally cheek! The general should give them the sack! Bunch of workshy lowborn layabaouts!

And that's why my regiment and I are here, to lead the unwashed rabble to victory in the name of Him on Earth. Gastly buisness this war, but Nobility obliges. Right chaps, let's take that hill! I want to be back in time for tea! Tally ho!

My god! err I mean By jove! :)

I got most of the lingo from watching a lot of "You rang, M'lord?" and "Black adder".

And reading "Pride and prejudice and zombies ".

It must just be that having this capability may tip the delicate balance in the galaxy towards the Imperium's favor, and ruin GW's stagnant Grimdark.

I

Lessee... LMG...

Merovech Pattern Assault Lasgun.

The multi-laser is the HMG, I guess? 35 kg, yea...

Echon-Pattern Mk III Assault Stubber, maybe? Only 21kg. Includes a 25 kg, 200 round backpack. If you are REALLY HUGE, you can do that as one guy, otherwise you'll need one guy to hold it and one guy for the backpack, perhaps.

Yea, I'd give a bunch of guys merovechs, and a few extra charge packs for them (it takes 2 at a time). Each one, without reloading, can do a full 24 dark heresy combat rounds worth of full auto. Spray and pray!
