Real trailer at last...

By Eggs, in X-Wing

Wow just wow. Those X-wings are incredible, I'm loving the new look. The Falcon pulling a loop with the John Williams theme pumping through the speakers brought up all the hairs on the back of my neck. Classic Ties, great but I thought they might have had a bit of a reboot. I like the look of the new lightsaber and it doesn't bother me that its impractical; so was Darth Maul's.

The football astromech droid is a bit odd but I'll reserve judgement until I see more. I cannot wait until next year!!!

What I hated was that it has a different look to the blades and a different sound effect. Didn't sound like a lightsaber to me.

I think that may have been intentional. Like it's some old, malfunctioning artifact this guy dug up, or it's an imperfectly-made imitation. I mean, the thing looks kinda sputtering and weak to me. Maybe he's just a wanna-be Sith (or Jedi) and that's what he could scavenge.

My point is, it could be a weird design change where they somehow want the light-swords to look more like fire-swords instead, or it could be some integral plot piece that makes more sense when you see the whole thing.

You can say this about basically everything we've seen so far. It's too early to tell anything. I'm just remaining cautiously optimistic.

If the whole grave robber concept is actually true, this lends credence to that idea. Entirely due to the fact it looks old as HELL.

Regarding the Millennium Falcon's dish - remember that the round one was torn off. It makes sense that it would be different. How different depends on Lando's insurance policy.

The first shot with John Boyega in the stormtrooper uniform is interesting. We don't know if he's wearing that in order to impersonate a storm trooper, such as what Han & Luke did in ANH. However, I'm hoping that he's actually a stormtrooper who's character will be developed. I really like the behind-the-helmet look that Timothy Zahn did with Daric LaRone and the others in Allegiance.

By the way, for those of you unfamiliar with Boyega, 'Attack the Block' was a really great movie. You should check it out.

I've heard for a long time that Boyega is a Stormtrooper who more or less calls it quits with The Empire. He wouldn't be the first character in Star Wars to do this either. So it fits with what I've heard.

Cool. :)

It'll be really interesting to see that point of view portrayed. Where did you hear that?

Several rumors, leaks. I can learn about the entirety of the story and still enjoy it, because I know the film will be so much greater to see, than anything I could ever picture.

That's going to be so awesome in 3D.

Oh my god yes.

But 3D makes movies worse.

Cross guard is a good idea, but unless that joint is made of cortosis it is going to have a serious flaw.

Exactly. Having the emitters EXACTLY where your opponents blade would naturally be trapped renders the whole thing moot.

Now, if they were angled slightly forward and didn't have the obvious weak point...

But 3D makes movies worse.

That Falcon scene in 3D on the big screen may make people sick...believe I'll sit in the back.

3D? Pfeh, I say! PFEH!!

I'll be seeing this about eighty kajillion times, regardless...

It's a teaser trailer. It's designed to tease. Don't read too much into the little clip scenes.

However, I thought it was pretty awesome.

It certainly felt like Star Wars to me...

Do you know what feels like Star Wars?

"OMG, if only they would give us a trailer. Why won't they give us a trailer, even a little one with just a glimpse. What is wrong with these anti-trailer people, how hard could it be to give us a quick peek at something, anything."

Gets a trailer.

"OMG, why would they give us such a no-content trailer. If only they could have given us something with more substance, more CGI, a different light saber. How hard could it be to give us something that has more Star-Warsiness."

Yup, sounds like Star Wars.

So disappointed. How do I put this? It looks great visually, no complaints there. Great production values.

However any film maker could have put this out - it's like it's a generic trailer for somebody's Star Wars fan film. Pretty much every familiar Star Wars element has it's own spin in this trailer. Tons of fan films do that - Falcon that isn't quite the Falcon that we know, lightsaber that isn't quite a lightsaber we know, droid that isn't quite a droid we know, etc. I'm not knocking the fact that elements have their own JJ spin. But the one thing that JJ can do that no other Star Wars film maker could do right now is show Mark's Luke looking like old Obi-Wan. Harrison and Peter looking like Han and Chewie sitting in their infamous cockpit. Carrie's Leia wearing the hair buns and activating a lightsaber. I wanted to see something that only JJ could show us and I don't feel like I got it.

I'm glad they didn't show any of the Big Four. Don't get me wrong, I can't wait to see them in the movie, but in theory they're playing smaller supporting roles. The movie isn't about them anymore, and Star Wars as a whole isn't, either. It's about much more than those four people/Wookiees.

This movie isn't about why we loved the original Star Wars. It's about why we should love Star Wars now. Of course things are going to look different, 30 years have passed, in reality and in-universe. Technology has advanced, ideals have changed, and the big iconic things of today (again, both IRL and in-universe) are different. As of now, we don't know the names of any of the characters featured in this, but who's to say that 30 years from now they won't be as iconic as Han, Luke, and Leia?

TL;DR- don't hate this because it's not just showing what you want from the originals. Love it because it's showing what Star Wars can become in the future.

Now that I look at the blade though...low quality all around. Purposefully poorly built I think. In the EU only competent jedi could built a decent lightsaber.

Ooooooohhhhhhhh...

I'm pleasantly surprised, the trailer was pretty slick. I love the new X-wings and the rectangle dish, love the Stormtroopers too. I don't like that it looks as if the Empire still is just fielding TIEs (I mean come on, if the Rebellion advances in tech, so can the Empire) but we'll have to wait and see if they have anything else. I HATE the beach-ball droid. Just . . . No.

That being said, while the trailer was really cool, just about everyone I've talked to agrees that it doesn't feel like Star Wars. Of course, this is just a teaser, so they just throw in whatever looks cool and doesn't progress the plot, but still. Except for the ships, you could have told me it was any generic Sci Fi movie and I would have believed you.

Really? Because as soon as I saw the white and black armor I knew it was Star Wars.

Or the R unit headed droid

or the speeder

or the lightsaber

The X-Wings

the Falcon

the TIEs

felt very Star Wars to me.

What feels like Star Wars though? I mean each trilogy feels very different. This one should too.

So long as it has space battles, john williams, lightsabers and blasters, it can pull off being Star Warsy.

Seriously people complaining about the practicality of some designs (ie the new lightsaber) need to look at the Death Star. The Death Star is a giant floating ball of impractical design. Death Star 2 was an even BIGGER floating ball of impractical design. Things in Star Wars are usually designed and modeled for what they add aesthetically.

Basically. The X-Wing is a big hot mess of impracticality. But it's widely adored.

Don't even get me started on the Lambda Class.

And the HWK-290? Hah! What a tragedy in terms of practicality. The lack of a frontal viewport just eats it up.

But they all look AMAZING.
