I am hoping for the ep 7 Xwing to make it to the game..drooling just imagining it...
Fellow X-Wingers, are you in it for the gameplay and/or Star Wars lore?
Considering I already own an army of High Elves from WFB and Black Templars from Wh40k the answer is...
Star Wars baby ![]()
Would not even spare a minute if it wasn't SW.
Both for me. Ever since I was a kid I loved the Xwing. Didnt really care bout the Jedis and Siths as much as other Starwars fans are but the fighters and Falcon though..
Coming from other miniature games though the balance Xwing has is excellent and the rules are clear cut even for tournaments. No rules bending and RAW vs RAI shenanigans.
My Rebel Fleet
Just need a regular Interceptor and a few more bombers then I can take a pic of my Empire Fleet. Now if only we can get that Empire huge ships now..

My wife would kill me but she likes the mods I do! so I squeak by with ..... Mistakes...
I certainly began with the lore as my draw in. Now, I don't feel I get much lore, but I like the game and the camaraderie.
However, I do want a way to get more into the story aspect of it, rather than just the 6a100pntDMs all the time.
I'm in it for the forums.
Both.
It scratches the skirmish itch I got when I realised Malifaux's edition change meant it wasn't the game I wanted it to be any more. (I also play Warmachine).
And...Star Wars. I've been an SW nerd since I was about 6 and "Return of the Jedi" came out.
Win-win.
Edited by almightyfishtankIs it cheating to say both?
I love the Star Wars lore and background, always have, but for me this game goes WAY beyond that with the depth of its tactical and competitive play.
SW lore brought me to the game, and still affects my play style. I'm regularly the only player in the room fielding a Y-wing, and that's not because of turrets, or chasing flankers, but because it's always been my favorite ship.
Maybe that hurts my chances of winning, but I don't mind. It increases my enjoyment. ![]()

Really enjoying the comments here, many experiences match my own. I'm a Star Wars fan at heart, RPGs mostly but I got sucked into 40k for a time. Once I got over my beaten wife syndrome I sold all my 40k stuff and put it all into x-wing. I provide the models to my friends. I'm that guy.
As a few of you mentioned, I'm irked by same faction play in tournaments. As a big Netrunner fan (**** if FFG doesn't make amazing stuff amirite?) I'd be happier bringing an imperial and rebel list to play each player twice. (In Netrunner you bring both Corp and Runner decks to an event)
Soon we'll have a 3rd faction so that will help dilute the lists. For me, it was the card art and minis that brought me in. FFG artists are seriously awesome!
One of my favourite computer games from back in the day was Tie Fighter, and the chance to play it again with models was too good to pass up.
I bought all the Rouge Squadron Grapic Novels after Wedge, the only survivor of The Three Amigos, snatched me a win against 4 Tie fighters. In particular the moment when I realised I'd done a sharp left 3 instead of a right 3, which landed me point blank next to the formation, then used Expert handling to roll out of all the arcs. I was pleased to find out he's as much of a badass in the EU as he is in game (and in the OT obviously).
I got in because I thought the miniatures were cool looking... used to play other miniature based games and the miniatures needed to be painted which led to all sorts of sloppy work and designs by newbs that have no skill or worst no paint jobs at all.. or far worst just a little cardboard chit to represent your ship etc...
I just recently started watching the animated series The Clone Wars just to get myself updated on some of the story, and I actually installed Tie Fighter again, as the game and storyline is seems even more awesome now that I'm older and actually able to put everything in context.
You know, this is kind of relavant to me lately. I had a neighbor that is maybe 5 years older than me, so he was a teenager when the first movie came out. He stated something about how no one knows what Star Wars is really about, but it's cool to see all the ships fly about. I talked to him about the plot and what it was and set him straight and it's much cooler with all that in mind. What gets me is that some of the biggest things are the Emperor dissolving the Senate, but it just gets bare mentions at the beginning of Episode IV.
I was also demoing epic play at a local board game con in my home town. The last game had a 20 year old gentleman (or so) watching as his friends were playing. In the spare moments between events I was chatting with him. He mentioned that he'd never seen Star Wars before and he always gets a hard time for it. I just breezed over the plot about someone manipulating the government to sieze power and destroy the Jedi. The Senate gets dissolved and the govt. develops a weapon to destroy entire planets. Renegades grab the plans and are trying to escape with it to try to destroy the weapon. He seemed surprised and said it sounded a lot cooler than he thought it would be about.
I think the overall plot is what makes Star Wars Rebels a cool idea. Oh, I know some people want to call it a kiddie show, etc, but it's at a really cool point in the story. It's the beginning of the rebellion. The first novel (A New Dawn) is not kiddie and goes into some interesting aspects of the EU. It also shows Kennan as a much different character and I'm looking forward to the next books that gets him to where he is now.
Plain and simple answer is...
Both.
Cheers
Both. Love the gameplay, much less time consuming then 40K which I had been playing, and also I loooooooovvvvvvveeeeee the Star Wars universe
Lore, first and foremost. Bought the Decimator 90% because of Mara Jade.
The only miniaturesgame collected before is a small 4-team collection of blood bowl.
But I could not bring myself to paint the small human, orc, chaos dwarf, and high elf figurines.
I never started 40K as I realised my wallet wouldn't survive the attempt.
Definately like the star wars lore, films, books, computergames, etc. a lot ![]()
So when introduced by friends to the game it didn't take very long before I got a few mini's of my own.
Edited by CununculusStar Wars, Star Wars, Star Wars. I just follow the franchise wherever the licence takes me. I was in with Wizards of the Coast's RPG and Star Wars Miniatures lines. When they lost the licence, I discovered Fantasy Flight Games. I drooled over their cooperative card game and very thematic-looking X-Wing miniatures game. I bought two cores of each game right out the gate.
I play a few non-Star Wars games, but only because I enjoy those IPs as well. I'm very much a thematic gamer. That is, I like when mechanics tie directly to the theme. As for mirror matches, I'm not too bothered by it. Imp-vs-Imp matches are fine because it reminds me of the infighting in the TIE Fighter games, and I just treat Rebel-vs-Rebel games like it's a handful of squad mates hitting the simulator like in the X-Wing books.
Had never played a tabletop miniatures game before but being a massive Star Wars fan and playing all the computer games ,I saw the adverts for X wing and thought when that comes out I'm getting it.
Being new to this little did I know how much I would be spending on it,the whole star wars thing has drawn me in ,both the miniatures themselves and the gameplay.
How could any star wars fan resist re in acting all them space battles ,ties vs x wings ,it just cries original trilogy .
With all the releases up till now any space battle from the original films can be played out, except for the obvious gigantic star destroyers.
So you can say I'm in it for the Star Wars and the epic ness of it all,oh and the great gameplay helps.
