Fellow X-Wingers, are you in it for the gameplay and/or Star Wars lore?

By Pestage, in X-Wing

Maybe you come from other miniature games like Warhammer 40k, or maybe you never laid hands on a tabletop miniature game before, but just love Star Wars.

Personally I'm one of those who never laid my hands on a tabletop miniature game before, although I grew up with friends who painted and played with lots of Warhammer stuff. My interest in Star Wars was also limited to growing up with and loving the first movies that came out, and playing way too much Tie Fighter on my computer back in the 90's. (The only reason I have a deep hatred for those faster than fast A-Wings)

What's really interesting is that X-wing miniatures somehow sparked a huge interest in the Star Wars universe for me. I find myself spending time on Wookieepedia just to read up on the pilots that I fly, which eventually takes me from article to article, and before I know it I've spent hours reading about everything from all the planets to the origins of the lightsaber.

I just recently started watching the animated series The Clone Wars just to get myself updated on some of the story, and I actually installed Tie Fighter again, as the game and storyline is seems even more awesome now that I'm older and actually able to put everything in context.

As for X-Wing, I love games that require tactical thinking and strategy, and those detailed miniatures are just too awesome and kind of nostalgic as most of them were included in Tie Fighter. I've always been a casual gamer, but playing games online never felt the same as gunning down A-Wings with a couple of friends back in the day. I think X-wing miniatures brought some of that feeling back, since it actually requires getting togheter with friends (unless you count Vassal), and the community as a whole seems awesome!

I'm really glad I decided to try out this game, and really looking forward to new ships and exploring more of the Star Wars universe!

Both.

Really it was the gorgeous minis that drew me in. The Gameplay helped keep me in. I suppose to be fair, lore hasn't got a thing to do with it. I mean.... Biggs died in episode 4, but I see him every time I play!

I loved SW before i loved 40K. 40K7th got me tires of 40K right about when wave 4 was announced and the Defender and phantom announced .. 2 of my favorite ships from SW lore. After that I picked up X-wing, was amazed at the prospect of games without lengthy rules discussions and it stuck.

For me, i've got hundreds of wargames and I thought i was done with buying anything else as I was never going to paint the stuff i do have before im 80.

But as xwing seemed fun to play, didnt require painting and a fair few friends were playing it i decided to give it a go and got into it more heavily than expected.

Personally i love the rich mythos/lore and really only enjoy games where the mechanics support that.

There are better games that reflect 'space battles' out these but this one is the most fun with the best backstory

Welcome to the community. As for me, I was a miniature gamer who had been on a hiatus since 2010 when my son was born. I have always been a Star Wars nut and when I saw this game in 2013, it scratched both itches for me. I have been addicted ever since.

Both. Star Wars got my foot in the door, good gameplay kept me there. Additionally, after years of Games Workshop Stockholm Syndrome, it was nice to have pre-painted, game-ready minis, and not have to deal with a company that resented my existence as a paying customer.

Both sort if. I'm a 40k refugee and I was looking to scratch my tabletop itch again without going back down that path. I saw the axis and allies air combat miniatures game but the random boosters really turned me off. Somone showed me attack wing and x wing and the Star Wars won out in part because I prefer it but also because of the small dog fighting emphasis the game had at the time. I'm definitely still here for the game play.

yes.

I had been playing Warhammer Fantasy for 13 years, but became really disillusioned with it. I was at a tournament and finished day 1 without a single win. I had heard about this new X-wing game and someone had the starter set. They played Luke with R2-D2 and I played 2 Tie Fighters. I beat him in less than 5 turns. I was hooked.

Since then, I've gone and read some of the EU stuff. I like the Thrawn books, but hit about all the content I'm willing to go in the direction of the books and such. The new Star War Rebels is out and gotten my son and I, both. I say I've gotten more into Star Wars due to the game, but it's a good time to be a fan with Disney taking over. They are going to push Star Wars.

Agreed, i think star wars might get a much needed shot in the arm. Cant be any worse than the prequels.. really it cant (plot and character wise i mean).

I used to play a lot of 40k, ran Gws events for years and got so sick of it i just left and stopped playing.

These days i play old school 'oldhammer' fantasy and 40k with likeminded friends (look up oldhammer, its a growing movement back to fun narrative gaming using rogue trader and 3rd edition warhammer) and im a lot happier, no power creep, no having to keep up with new stuff... just play the old rulesets that were fun.

I would think the answer for many here would be both as the mechanics of this game were originally available through Wings of War and Wings of Glory. There is nothing "new" about the mechanics concept, so the brand name likely drew a lot of people in.

I too oldhammer.

I kept hearing about this great Star Wars game but with Fantasy and 40K armies I decided that I wasn't going to pick up another game.

However I heard more and began to think that this could be a miniatures game my GW refugee friends might be willing to play being Star Wars and as the investment was minimal (I was so innocent back then lol). So I broke down and bought a core set to take round to a buddy's to play. We spent an evening playing the game and were both hooked.

So it was Star Wars that drew me in but it's the gameplay that I continue to play for

Same old story. Took my first bite because of the minis. Been eatin' the stuff ever since because of the gameplay. No time wasted on paging through rules tomes is a biggie. It's a clever little game, and it delivers the fun I want. In comparison, I participated in a local one-day Flames of War tournament, and even though people were friendly, they brought nicely painted armies and we played on beautiful tables, it simply didn't make people smile and laugh. I won as many games as I lost, but the experience was about the same for all games: Somewhat tedious.

The time and cash investment is small compared to 40K... I mean the hours of painting while satisfying... And the terrain...

Both. I am primarily a hex and counter guy. Never played anything with minis...until now. Game play is fast, fun, without being too abstract. Beautiful system. Simple yet with the right amount of challenge. Right amount if luck IMHO.

lore helps as well. Will attract some people. Probably would not be as enthused if prequels were involved.

I've never played a miniatures game before X-Wing. I always thought they looked really cool and fun, but I just didn't want the cash-sink.

But when I found out that X-Wing had a much lower barrier of entry in both cost and time-investment, I jumped in head first. It scratches two itches I have: table top gaming and collecting. I used to collect Star Wars action figures like a fiend. I don't as much any more, and part of that is because of X-Wing.

Both. The fact that its Star Wars aids supremely.

However, if this had been a WWII game, cheap, fun, and highly strategic. You'd see me stay and have fun too.

Both.

I've always been interested in table top gaming but due to my inability to paint to a good (or even bad) standard, has put me off in the past. OCD in this case does not help at all  X-wing ticked all the boxes for me, pre-painted, star wars universe, fun/strategic to play and caters to my inner collector.

Community is awesome and it only seems to be growing here in New Zealand.

Yes, both.

I love Star Wars, and X-Wing (and FFG's other games) are a great interpretation of that universe. But I'm also a serious wargamer, and I burned out on Warhammer 40k around the time X-Wing was starting up. FFG is everything that GW never was!

I wouldn't be playing it if it wasn't Star Wars. But the reason I love it as much as I do is because of the game play.

So both.

I came because it's Star Wars; I stayed because the gameplay is solid.

The lore. ;)

But what Bhunter said. IP alone does not make a great game.

Star Wars brought me here, gameplay keeps me here.
