Medieval etc. European and church law are full of bizarre practices.

In Germany at one time, dying before you came to trial would not stop the trial, since determining guilt so important, the corpse would stand trial.

The Catholic church at one time had to decide whether a corporation could be excommunicated (ultimately deciding no, hence the article about the difficulty of applying effective legal sanctions to companies titled "No soul to ****, no body to kick").
