Things you learned in your last game

By dotswarlock, in X-Wing

Here is a thread designed to share what you learned during your last game(s). Tried something unique and it worked? Share it! What if it was a disaster? Share it too!

I'll start

Success: Rexler + HLC + push the limit actually works extremely well with a nearby ship equipped with Wingman to eat the stress. It helped me make full use of Rexler's ability and

mobility.

Failure: Kir Kanos with Mauler Mithel equipped with squad leader. The idea of Mithel handing a focus or evade to make full use of Kir's ability (and potentially 4 points of damage) sounds good on paper, but I can't pull it off (Mauler gets torn to shreds).

Failure: You'd think that evasive would work great on an Interceptor, but push the limit truly works better (that or the dice gods were against me).

What about you guys?

My last game I played imperial for the first time and learned how easy it is to have your tie fighters one shotted. Also how fun it is to use tie-fighters for blocking shenanigans and even learned that there is a use for stygium particle accelerator, low ps phantoms. Also at least some opponents would rather hunt down Carnonr Jax before a un-named phantom.

Failure all Named TIE Defenders - they just draw so much hate. They don't live very long. Is this what it feel like to fly Wedge?

I think I need to find a way for Imperials to protect their high value ships. Evil Biggs anyone?

"Biggs, Join me, and together we can destroy the emperor, and put an end to this destructive conflict."

What about you guys?

Range 1 doughnut holes really, really don't like higher-PS pilots with Engine Upgrade.

That generic TIE fighters seem to last the game when named TIES are on the board. Or somehow the dice gods were looking for a laugh.

That and Corran plus R2D2 is a good build to take a lot of abuse.

that 2 defenders + jonus is very strong, but als very vulnerable to flankers, because they are at their best sticking together.

Furball is a fun and quick way to teach the game to prospective new players.

You literally took the words out of my mouthfingers. That is the last thing I learned. However, I suppose I'll go one further and say that while it worked in that fight because I made it work, I highly doubt I'll do it again. It was a team game with 200 points per side, so there was some leeway but I found that I really didn't like anchoring my zippy Defender to a Wingman BSP.

Never get high on your own supply..

What can I say? Scarface was playing in the background. :D

That Tie Phantoms have an uncanny ability to roll 5 hits/crits before modifying attack dice at range 1. Has happened to me at least twice now!

Landing on Asteroids is painful...

RIP, Green Squadron.

Wes Janson sucks. Kill him fast.

Remember your upgrades and actions.

A high point ship that draws a lot of "hate" is every bit as valuable running around in circles and being a distraction as it is actually doing what it is hated for.

More specifically, my last game my opponent wanted badly to remove Corran Horn from the board. I didn't plan it this way, but Corran spent 80% of the game running away and took 0 shots until the last two rounds of the game. I have always hated to have an expensive ship "doing nothing", but in this case I was shown that the nothing was actually quite a lot. My B-Wings went totally unmolested and were able to line up shots consistently as my opponent chased Corran. He was every bit as good at clearing the field for the B-Wings as he was at firing 3 red dice.

Dark Curse is awesome bait for a round or two when you force him down your enemy's throat. Then flank a Jax into the enemies right after and feel the hate flow through them.

That taking the competitive gloves off and playing the game just for laughs is just as enjoyable!

I tried a 5x Black Squadron + Predator and Night Beast last night against Chewbacca, Luke and Horton.

I realized I don't really need to fly them as a swarm. I can be more dynamic. Although flying as a swarm helps keep them organized.

I won, by the way. The opponent did damage where he could but didn't focus on destroying ships.

I took out Luke first, then Chewbacca, then Horton.

I believe I only lost one ship.

Dont leave your models on the table overnight....

see 'disaster' thread. :(

In the same line of thought, mark your movement templates and range rulers in a creative way (on the cardboard edge is a good idea). Those things move around / are borrowed a lot during a game and one guy lost his range ruler the last time I played (fortunately, he had 2).

Never leave a Fat Chewbacca as the last ship you go after, he just won't die. Never chase a Dash with Veteran Instinct, HLC and Outrider with lower PS ships as he can be very elusive.

Never, ever trust the dice. <_<

Phantoms are hard to fly, almost too maneuverable. Sometimes it's better to just K-turn them.

If there is a way for my girlfriend to roll 3 evades with the Falcon, she will find it.

Never, ever trust the dice. <_<

I think you meant that for the thread titled "What did you learn flying your TieF at range 3 through an asteroid and still got one shot?'

Whisper

Styg...gum..er..ish(?) Accelerator

Outmaneuver

Rebel Captive

Fire Control System

Is pretty effective, and token city. Very easy to have evades, focuses, and TL's all at once. Just make sure there's something else for your opponent to shoot at. Advanced Cloaking felt like it took too much control out of my hands, and allowed my opponent to anticipate my movements easier.

My work schedule prevented me from playing since Imdaar, so I'm just now getting around to playing with Phantoms. Hope this isn't old news...
