A lost message in these forums

"Regardless of how people act elsewhere, our hope and intent for these forums is to provide an active community where fans of our games can interact, exchange thoughts or ideas, and otherwise engage in friendly discussions. Apparently this is not always an accurate description of the environment here.

We appreciate the actions of all those forum members who make the effort to participate in level-headed, supportive conversation. We also greatly appreciate the patience of everyone who has stayed on these boards, in spite of the sometimes difficult environment.

To keep up with the incredible growth of active users and daily posts has been a challenge. Be aware that we have plans in motion to address these issues and improve the community over the coming months.

Best,

FFG Webmaster"

This message was attached to a locked thread and I felt it was important enough to repeat. I understand moderating these forums can be tricky as FFG has so many forums on their site. This is wonderful news to know that FFG at least seen the trend that has been growing in the X-Wing forums of late and will take action to improve things. Thank You FFG Webmaster.

It is an important message. The problem they've created for themselves is really that they've not maintained a visible presence. Do that and 99% of the problems are gone. Find someone in their staff who loves the game and loves talking about it and make him a mod. A moderator is nothing more than a regular user with a few more buttons.

But it's nice that they've noticed.

I look forward to it. The forums have become all but unreadable recently. Good to know they have realised the error of their ways though.

took them long enough. I was slowly considering abandoning the board. Finding it harder to find posts that perk my interest.

If anyone sees this, I would really like the forums to have subforum categories. Custom/painting, list critique, campaign/scenarios, strategy.

Then, the main "general" forum will show posts from all of these subforums. (Like a feed).

If you'd like to go a step more complicated, it would be great to allow signed in users to designate which subforums they want to see stuff from in the general forum feed and which ones they don't want.

Pretend I don't care about lists critiques, then, threads in that section will not appear in my general feed view.

Past that, I think things are still moderately civil (in comparison to the rest of the internet) but it does bias my opinion because I try not to click on the known argument threads.

Given that this is the official community board for their largest game, I expect more presence from them. Not the thought police that ruled the GW boards before they died, mind you, but just somebody who pops in daily to check up on stuff. Stuff happens, and a mod or two can help this stuff from getting out of control, as it has in the past.

Every forum, no matter how civil, can develop a troll problem. Sometimes there needs to be a Beowulf. Heck, even without trolls it's helpful to have one around, just in case.

You can't leave now BB, just like I can't, and so on and so forth. If FFG does what you just laid out that would solve it. The reason we see arguments and get dragged into them once in a while is because we are seeing things in topics we are currently stuck being forced to see in order to view what we want to read. That builds up after a while.

If I see one more GDMFing silly: yew-hoo here I am with my list, tell me all about my list post, or the crybabies complaining and hating on FFG topics... when all I am looking for are cool modeling topics and fun contemplative topics related to the games we love... I am going to break something!

Hold on a minute... I'll make one. =P

Seriously. Joe, do you have time in your day to talk about the Tie Advanced? *sticks foot in door. Unbelievers go to Hell you know. You don't want to be stuck there with Emperor Palpatine all your after-life.

I believes it's!

...therefore it is true!

They do bring it on themselves a bit as well. Remove the post count under members name, have active moderators (some topics who i am convinced have been reported from day one, have been there for days to rot) create more subfora and interact with the users more (no, they dont need to spoil things or have the makers here, but they could pass up some of the questions that live within the community). Yes they have a lot of forums, but most of them are very quiet. This forum however is not and thus deserves more attention.

subfora. thats a beautiful word.

Just bumping back to the top.

Just bumping back to the top.

I just noticed the Chinese characters above your avatar. In Chinese, it means "dragon god" or something along those lines.

Didn't really have much to add beyond that, so bump.

Indeed. When the cats are away the trolls will play.

I'm a fan of an uprate / downrate system, and user defined viewing thresholds, like slashdot.

Trolls get modded to -1 and with your threshold to 0+, you never even waste your time looking at them. The implementation wouldn't work exactly the same on this site as it would with slashdot, but the general principle applies.

A nurse I know got some Chinese script tattooed on her back, I asked her what it meant. It probably says "drunk white girl" was her response.

It says amongst other things that it's not chinese but Japanese :) (which is the 3rd time today I see a reference to Japanese players here. That should be a good hint for the person who was asking how international X-Wing is).

I am however Irish American so I can't speak to the popularity of the game in Japan :P

And I have a very limited understanding of what all that 日本文 means. The languages share some characters, which I understand diverge in their meanings. I've only been in China for one year, so I'm still learning 中文 myself.

Interestingly, I read "Japan" (日本) in Chinese as "sun source", so I suppose it's the land of the rising sun!

I'm white Canadian, but from what I've seen here in China, Star Wars is only just starting to catch on, and slowly. It's considered a weird American thing. People wear C3PO and Vader T-shirts not knowing what they reference.

Back on topic, I don't want to see a popularity contest with upvotes and downvotes like Reddit. Often people will get downvoted for unpopular opinions, when that's not what the function is for. I understand there are other issues that come with mod rule, but I think I prefer it to mob rule.

Huh. I'm surprised that annoys you Boss. Isn't that the sort of thing the forum is actually for?

Also a very good point.

BoardGameGeek has a sort of hybrid system: the two options are upvote or report. Enough reports will drop a post below the default threshold for most users to view (but like an ignored user here, you can still read the post with a click).

But reports also flag posts for mod attention, which happens swiftly (at least, swiftly relative to here). It seems to work there, and at least in theory it could work here.

I was inclined to post something similar to the op.

I'm glad he did so I could like it. I too was ready to abandon these boards except for the occasional lurk.

Anyone else noticed the 'Report' button was still available on that locked thread? I've never been more tempted!

Wonderful, developing community, huh?! Reported!!!

We could definitely use a greater moderator presence in here. The amount of off-topic drama is frankly appalling.
