What ship do you have a positive emotional attachment to?

By MooseMCA, in X-Wing

The dog fighting scenes in Return of the Jedi are my absolute favourite scenes in all of the films. I still find them exciting to watch. The B-Wing captured my imagination most - it's look and movement was so unique.

Millenium Falcon, hands down. Always had a thing for that fast hunk of junk. I was 6 in 1977, and Star Wars is the first movie I ever saw at the theatre. Big impression, to say the least.

The TIE Interceptor.

You see it patrolling around in RoTJ early in the film, but when Lando yelps "Fighters, coming in!" and all the Interceptors and TIE/lns swarm over them... one of my favourite Star Wars moments.

"There's too many of them!!" Yeah, no kidding, buddy. Hahaha. I love that guy. He's so freaked out. I love it.

In my opinion, the Interceptor's the coolest looking, most bad-ass spaceship. Star Wars or not, from any IP. Period.

To the OP, that's an awesome story, it's amazing how Star Wars means so much to so many people, while I can see Star Wars being a tragic place for a while, it's great that you can now look at Star Wars as a positive, especially since that's something you can do and fondly remember someone who was so important to you every time you play or watch the movies and so forth. I also loved that game and I actually just started it up again yesterday, still a fun game! I wish Disney or somebody would do something new with it. For me it was always the Slave 1. I was also born in the 80s so for me I first saw it when my friend let me borrow the original trilogy on VHS, and then I bought the Special Edition trilogy from there (well my parents did.) For I guess the same reason as everyone else, Boba Fett and Han Solo were my 2 favorite characters. Han Solo was my first Star Wars toy and I used to use GI Joes to be Boba Fett and I would use a Baseball glove to represent the Slave One taking Han Solo away. Eventually my parents bought me the Slave One toy and I was so psyched because it had a picture of Boba Fett and Han Solo in carbonite on the front of the box, so because I was a kid I assumed everything was included. I was so upset when there was just this little Han in Carbonite thing and no Boba Fett. My parents took me to every store in the area until we finally found an actual Boba Fett figure... good times haha

Unfortunately I do not share any such attachment. While I enjoyed the movies as a kid, I never really appreciated them until I was older. I revisited the series again in the 90's when I was a teenager and realized the story was truly great.

I was a GI Joe / Transformers kid (yes, I cried when Optimus Prime died).

Hands down, the TIE Defender. LOVED flying it in the "TIE Fighter" game.

Same for me. I love how scary good it is and how awesome it looks.

Also I have fond memories of fielding 30-40 squadrons of Defenders in Star War Rebellion and decimating my friends fleet with them. I always played Imperial and he was always Rebel. He hated my Defender swarms as they would tear up any capital ship I sent them against. It was good times.

I am actually very excited for the new batch of video games that will be coming out with the new movies. For me the 90s Star Wars video games were my Star Wars. I watched the OT early on, but I was born after ROTJ. So I didn't get that initial exposure to them.

I guess from OT, I'd have to say The Falcon because I love the idea of living in a space craft and still be able to zip around and dog fight and stuff. I felt the love between Han, Chewie (although he was a bit abusive), and the Falcon. I felt it more with the Ebon Hawk from KoTOR or my Jedi's Corvette in Old Republic. I couldn't get that from the Enterprise because that thing was practically a floating city. I'm from NYC originally and already know what that feels like. lol

Wow! These have been some great replies! Thanks to all for sharing your memories!

Firespray for me. I loved Boba Fett as a kid.

The whole idea of Bounty Hunters was cool to me. In "Empire" when they first came on the screen and I was 8 years old, it was awesome. All alien weird looking characters with guns and armor. It was such a shift from the Rebel/Imperial look which had become so defined after watching Star Wars a million times.

I don't even like the design as much as I like the idea of a ship that is outside the norm.

Needless to say I will be playing Scum & Villainy like crazy when it comes out :)

Nice story from the OP. I was 8 when the first movie came out, so needless to say Star Wars has always loomed large in my life. I remember going to the toy store and agonizing over what action figure would be my first one to buy (stormtrooper), or running to 7-11 with change I scrounged up to buy a pack of cards.

And while the second trilogy is vilified, I have fond memories of taking my son to see them, and we enjoy them to this day, though I do hit the skip button during the romance scenes. Now that he is a man, we enjoy playing XWing together over a beer and good natured ridicule.

As far as emotional attachment, I would have to say Back Stabber, as in one match I executed a KTurn right behind my opponents last ship and proceeded to roll 4 crits for the win. At that moment I said "I love you Back Stabber".

When Empire came out, we were all in awe of Slave I, especially after seeing it take off from Cloud City. You barely saw it in that one scene where the Falcon drops off of the Star Destroyer, but seeing it that first time, when the wings shift, man...

EMPIRE-Rcomp-02.jpg

Still so cool.

But for overall sentimental attachment? I'd have to say my heart still rests with...

Highwind_5.jpg

I know, I know, but the title didn't say SW ships..... ;)

Now I have it, and it remains as I vaguely remember first seeing it, in just the right lighting to reflect the Dark Forces loading screen.

Close! Pic 3 is more in line with it, but that is excellent nonetheless!

That's freaking awesome...that's exactly what flashed into my head when I first saw the hawk

Isn't it..? Lots of folks have no clue how amazingly iconic The Moldy Crow is to so many of us who grew up with Dark Forces. But man, very few ships evoke such positive memories for me.

While I loved all fighters, I believed that the Interceptor is the one that truly got my blood pumping while playing X-Wing vs Tie fighter. There was the feeling of great mobility and firepower combined with the fact that a single mistake will get you blown out of the skies. If you won, you were truly a pilot to be feared!

My close second "large ship" would be my Decimator from Star Wars Galaxies. I had been constantly upgrading its equipment, giving me the same kind of feeling that I suspect Han had while taking care of the Falcon, but it had the look and feel of an Imperial war machine, one that would crush everything in its path (ok, so it did not really, but it was still fun to fly!)

I wasn't even born when the OT was released in theatres (having just turned 21 today), but Star Wars is still the first movie I ever remember seeing. Recall it perfectly. The whole family was gathered in my parents room, I was sitting on the floor in front of their bed, and they had just gotten a brand new tv as big as I was. For three days in a row, we watched the OT, one a day, and I was absolutely mesmerized by it. At the time I couldn't appreciate the plot, but loved the "action" and lightsabers and space (I loved space as a kid). I grew up with toys and video games from the series, among my favorites being Rogue Squadron for PC. I played that game to death. Since I was growing up around the time the PT was coming out (which I did see in theatres) I flew the N-1 every chance I got. However, that ship still wasn't my favorite.

What I really wanted to fly was the Y-wing. I don't know why. Maybe it was the exclusivity of the ship (being available for only one, maybe two? missions). I was dying to use it on every mission, but alas, unable.

Then I got XWA from my grandpa. The game itself was extremely complex for my young brain, so I never finished the story (got to disc 2 sometime last year, but it's just so difficult to play without a flightstick). But I played the dogfights all the time, and was fascinated by the different TIE variants I had never seen before. Yes, the standard fighter, the interceptor, and the bomber were the main three I recognized in Rogue. But then there's the Defender, the Phantom, Avenger, and those weird experimental variants. My mind nearly exploded. But then, as I scrolled down to the bottom of the ship list, I found my precious Y-wing waiting for me. Every game, I'd give the bad guys a capital ship. Screw the fight, I wanted to bomb that thing to pieces.

Now I have X-wing. There's Y-wings in that. But, they were released when the game was young, and they simply aren't quite feasible currently. That being said, I am EXTREMELY excited for Wave 6, not because there's a new faction to play as, but because the Y-wing is getting some love, and will finally be the ship it was meant to be. Bomber. Tank. Missile platform. Ion cannon. And whatever that new BTL upgrade does. I'm so extremely ready for wave 6 to come out.

I don't have any story like the OP or Captain Lackwit, but i would say the StarViper. Simply because it's Mando.

I am the biggest Mando in the world. (Or at least one particular Mando)

I wasn't raised a Star Wars fan like most of you. In fact, as a child I kinda liked Star Trek more than Star Wars. Other than the original films (which I did get to watch as a kid), my first serious encounter with Star Wars was the TIE Fighter PC game as a high-schooler, and soon after, Timothy Zahn's Heir to the Empire novels. I was hooked after that. So, the TIE Defender has sentimental value to me. I was pretty excited when it was announced, and it was my no-brainer first pick when I won an Imdaar Alpha tourney. I've played triple Defenders many times to a decent degree of success, and am experimenting with a few lists using Rexler Brath as the centerpiece. I'm most likely going to buy a fourth Defender at some point so I can try my hand at a custom color scheme for it, just because.

HERESY! oh sorry... wrong forum....

Ooh, if your looking for a good way too use Rexler, try putting Predator and an HLC on him.

You know the more I think about it, the B-wing has a place in my heart that also just won't go lol. Let's just say that when I was in my mid twenties and cleaning out my attic I found a bunch of my micro machines action fleet ships. My girlfriend at the time was a total Star Wars fan (I know, win right?) and I gave her all the ships EXCEPT Slave I (no one gives up on the Fett man!) and a B-wing.

Lesson learned kids? Don't get tattoos (never have lol) of girls or give them your Star Wars toys (d'oh!) unless you know they are really the one and only forever.

My tattoo rules

No names

No fine art lines

No bright colours

They all fade and blur too easily or you change your mind about that awesome band.

I'm purely a tribal/black work guy!

Tiger stripes from neck to elbow!

I was five when I saw Star Wars at the drive-in in 1977. For me the X-wing will always be the sentimental favourite, I wanted to be a Rebel pilot and save the Galaxy.

Similar story here. After my folks took my sister and me to the drive-in to see ANH, my dad continued our model-building hobby to an all-new level, when we built models of the X-Wing and the TIE Advanced. Vader's fighter has had a special place in my heart ever since.

Probably the TIE Defender.

I love imperial equipment. I like the sleekness, the straight-edge lines, simple ball cockpit, and the fact that the nameless, faceless generics are the lot of these craft... but they can still prevail. A humble background for these TIE Fighters and at the forefront of them all is the TIE Defender.

Unlike some other examples of the TIE Line the Defender is an elegant mix of new and old design elements. People scoff and wave off the "TIE Interceptor wings glued on" but they aren't exactly TIE Interceptor wings... they take some cues, but they're new. But the TIE Defender is balanced where it needs to be between redesign and older elements.

Considering the TIE Defender I didn't think it was horribly overpowered. I felt this was what a space superiority fighter should be- a great mix of weapons and flexibility that justly gave it the title of best starfighter in the galaxy. It didn't feel overgunned either- it hit like a TIE Interceptor, had the ion flexibility of the gunboats, and ordinance warheads enjoyed by A-Wings and X-Wings. The missions you were required to undertake as the TIE Defender weren't cakewalks either, I never felt like a battle was too easy with the TIE Defender.

I have a soft spot for the Assault Gunboat because that poor, beautiful fighter never gets the light of day from Star Wars anymore. But if there was one ship that was likely to be present that I loved? It's the TIE Defender. I wish they could have done the beefier ingame model instead, to help us believe in their capabilities, but at certain angles the decipher model has some elegance as well. I wanted four originally, but since that can't happen I have to suffice with three. One of which I painted brown for some reason, to signify being a squadron leader.

They are not TIE/In wings, they are Tie Avenger wings. Also inverted but still.

TIE Interceptor and A-Wing. I like the fast ships, the ones with the crazy pilots. The A-Wing hitting the Executor was one of the highlights of Endor for me.

Also, the Executor. I love Star Destroyers, and it is the coolest of the bunch. My interest in seeing SDs done right is why I never want one in X-Wing.

Cap ships are what I really like, so much so that I wrote several papers on them in university. No silly subs or carriers. Full-on gun ships like Bismarck, Iowa, Nelson, and Yamato. Missile cruisers, too. Ticonderoga, Luyang II, Kirov. So of course I like the big ships in Star Wars.

(I know Luyang II aren't cruisers, but they're big for Chinese ships.)
