Official complaint thread !!!!!

By KILODEN, in X-Wing

The majority of our Monday night X Wing group is not buying Armada. There is a lot of resentment. And no epic ships, though I don't care, is bugging them.

My complaint is simple, FFG you have officially split the X Wing community. Not smart.

I don't get this. Why would people be mad about Armada?

It's not like Armada is preventing FFG from putting out new content for X-Wing. QUITE THE OPPOSITE, in fact - considering that we're getting, by the end of the year, Wave 5, Rebel Aces, and a whole new faction, while Armada won't even ship until 2015.

You may not like the direction FFG has chosen to go in with the new waves, but it's not like FFG's decisions were dictated by Armada. There's zero evidence to support that conclusion.

Put it this way - if FFG had JUST announced the new X-Wing content, would everyone still be upset?

I think the issue is that FFG is kind of cannibalizing their own customers/player base (X-Wing), especially since people have a finite amount of money they can spend on hobbies. Not that Armada isn't appealing, but I'm not quite sure if it would attract that many additional player's that wouldn't have chosen X-Wing anyways.

Thank you! Exactly.

And this is a complaint thread ... let us vent. I love X Wing, I even won our local AoIA event, I think I will love Armada ... but part of me is pissed because it is splitting our local Star Wars mini community. Let us vent. It's good for the soul.

A new, deep and well made Capital Ship game won't attract more people then a game they already have?

Sorry but where's the logic in this?

X-Wing will draw as many people as it will. Armada isn't going to be driving droves of people out of X-Wing, not any more then Wave 6 will. If anything it will draw more people in. There will be people who see Armada and since they love cap ship games, will get it. Once they do then they're more likely to be exposed to X-Wing.

Gencon ain't over yet

and since this is a rant thread, I don't like your third faction crap. Oh yes I will buy it, but I don't like it.

FFG apparently splits the X-Wing community every time they release something new. Why should SWA be any different? After all, the fires from the holy wars after they didn't release fuchsia-colored wooden tokens have yet to burn out.

I don't get the "cannibalizing" thing either.

So FFG has given you another Star Wars miniatures game. You - and everyone in your gaming group - have complete freedom to play it or not play it.

Some people that play X-Wing might stop playing X-Wing to play Armada instead. Is that what you're upset about? Really?

EDIT: And if that's what you're upset about, why? If your friends would prefer to play Armada because it's a better game, why would you blame them or FFG for that? That's totally insane.

I find it seriously funny that people who participate in a miniatures game, one that happens to be the cheapest to play are angry that more options are being given on expanding the enjoyment of the Star Wars universe in gaming.

Have any of you actually purchased or played Games Workshop or other mainstream miniatures games? The initial cost and then upkeep of said games is greatly higher than the entry cost and continued playing of X-Wing. I understand this is a complaint thread but seriously complaining about more options is silly.

Hmmm.... I just watched the Covenant Demo for Armada recorded at Gencon... I have to say, I am a bit on the fence about it now. Not sure why really, but something is putting me off, where yesterday it was a buy for sure.

That being said, I don't think Armada is cannibalizing the X-wing community or ships... What makes x-wing so appealing was the price, the simplicity and the speed of play (amongst others, like the pre-painted ships, the balance, the ultimate depth and the license)... but for those main 3, Armada doesn't seem to be offering or trying to sell itself on those points. They really do seem like quite distinct games beyond the superficiality ,and they have made big efforts to make sure that it is a very different experience from x-wing from what I saw so far.

Throw off the tyranny of 'OR', embrace the beauty of 'AND'.

Or you know, realize it is OK to like one or the other and never be into the other game.

"Hate Leads To The Darkside..."

How am I supposed to afford all this cool stuff /rage

The Star Viper is on a small base...

I am not amused.

I'll be buying the third faction to keep expanding our XWing ships and cards, no problem there...

As far as Armada and Assault, no way!!!

Now if they had brought out a Huge Imperial ship, even retailing in the $150-200 range, I would've been all over that!

XWing is a unique system! Thats part of the allure! Creating or modifying board games with Star Wars doesnt do it for me!

Now if somebody would come out with a good set of combined ground unit rules and properly sized miniatures, 18mm would be great, I'd be buying LOTS!!!

I love X-Wing... just look at my post count and you can see that ;)

I love what Armada is shaping up to be, and I will be playing both. But a lot of that is as you say Major, because they're not the same game.

Armada looks to be a fairly deep, crunchy game and on a whole different scale then X-Wing. I just can't see anything about it, other then perhaps the price of paying 2 games that would cause the community to split.

One thing I've noticed with FFG is that they will spring a surprise announcement like it's nobody's business. Examples include the wave 4 announcement, wave 5 announcement, Armada announcement. None of those major announcements were made on special days if I recall correctly. The Imperial epic ship announcement may very well be made in the middle of next week or some other random time.

This is what I was alluding too earlier, sorry if there was any confusion.

"Perhaps you think you're being treated unfairly?"

(Sorry, could not resist :P)

Alter the deal damnit! :)

Ok... You put that piece of crap E-Wing in... So give us the TIE Avenger, XG-1 Star Wing, and the Cygnus Spaceworks Missile Boat already!

The sole of my right shoe is coming loose. Walking around work today I sounded a bit like a stumbling clown.

I don't really have a major complaint but I'll take the opportunity to pre-complain in case the new faction includes a ship with a cannon but does not add any new cannons or cannon-related tech to the game

TIE Defender, no new cannon

Outrider, major cannon gimmick, no new cannon

Rebel Aces, no new cannon

gimme dem cannons

Actually it looks VERY MUCH like FFG have decided to go with armada instead of imperial epics.

Zero evidence? The lack of a huge ship reveal at gencon is evidence. What's wrong with you?

I don't buy it, and here's why. The new FAQ's and Tourney Rules got updated last week? 2 weeks ago? Recently. Anyway, they included specific rule changes for huge ships in Epic. I don't think they would have bothered doing that if Epic was dead.

Not be a troll or anything, but... how is this complaints thread "official"?

I wasn't directing my comments at anyone in particular, just general reaction really. No singling out meant!

Agree that it is a fair point that the price is getting steep to be in FFG space combat games though... At this rate they are leaching about 1-2k out of me a year (some of that to self-made custom tokens, mattes etc admitedly) but at this point my completionist streak is starting to waver lol... I have everything there ever was, including rare cards for xwm.... I am starting to have trouble keeping up! It isn't the price neccesarily, but I joke with my friends who play that they need to get to my house and lower my 'cost per game' into something below 3 figures lol...

Whole lotta Negative Nancys in this thread.

um... 'COMPLAINT' thread... kind of leans toward the negative... lol ;)

Was anyone seriously under the illusion that we where getting huge ships? Sometimes the rumor/dream mill is overly excessive. I would be shocked if this ever actually happened, let alone now.

Yes, I genuinely thought they were going to release an Epic Imperial ship... The space they left on the shelf was pretty big, seemed the logical conclusion over a third faction since it was an 'empty slot' in the current stuff. The rumor/dream mill is pretty often correct or a good predictor. Do you honestly think they don't look at their own boards and others to see what people are saying? Never hurts to mention what you want, though it is by no means a guarantee.

Seems pretty odd for you to be 'under the illusion' we aren't getting a huge imperial ship ever too by the same token no?

Note, by huge I am assuming some EU or otherwise non-movie ship to fill that slot, as no movie imperial ship is of appropriate size or function by a country mile. I would definitely be (more than ever now) absolutely sure there would never be an SD in x-wing, at least as a based ship.
