I love the design of the old Star Wars stuff, x-wings and tie fighters. They are just beautifully designed. But the important thing for me is playing. Table top games are notoriously hard to balance and FFG did not make a bad job out of it. They botched the missiles, but dogfight WWII-style is more exciting anyway than jet fighters launching their fire-and-forget-missiles. The mechanism was originall developed for wings of war, a game trying to simulate WWI/II dogfighting but is far better suited to the cinematic wing commander flying, George Lucas took to the screen. (Anyone remembering the pc game Wing Commander? To let go the afterburner at watch the vaccuum of the universe slowing down your starfighter...) The game has diversity and it works which is no mean feat. Well done, FFG.
Would you play this game if it wasn't Star Wars?
No definitely not. I am not a miniature game player nor a board gamer. I play Pokémon with my kids. If a friend hadn't have introduced me I never would have played. And if I had to paint the models I wouldn't be trying to buy every expansion either.
I've always been a fan of aerial combat and the Rogue Squadron and X-Wing games of my youth drew me in, as I adore the ship designs. That said, if I hadn't played at least one game and did a lot of research into everything first (which I did) I wouldn't have bought it at all. I made a very very informed purchase.
The core of the matter is that the game is solid. By no means is it perfect or without drawbacks, but it's manageable, it's fun, the minis are EXCELLENT and although it's the vast majority of my entertainment budget it is still affordable to someone who works minimum wage and has student loans.
I watched the promo video about the game because it was Star Wars. I bought into the game because the game looked fun, dynamic, expandable, and did not require painting or rulers.
No. The only reasons I play the game are because it is the closest thing I have to 1) new X-Wing novels; 2) new X-Wing video games; 3) new X-Wing merchandise. None of these things can be divorced from Star Wars.
