Would you play this game if it wasn't Star Wars?

By cyclopeatron, in X-Wing

Nope. When I saw that Wizards of the Coast gave up their license I eagerly awaited to learn who would pick it up. Never heard of FFG before they got the Star Wars license. I've been following X-wing since Day 1. I loved the X-wing and TIE fighter video games, and the X-wing novels are my favorite books of all time (I read them again, and again)!

Without the IP, I wouldn't have touched it. With the Star Wars name, it is the game I have been waiting to play for years!

Depends on the venue. Star Wars, yes. Star Trek, yes. BSG, YES!!!! make it now **** it FFG! Dragons, NO.

BSG? Would be awesome, but there would be a core set and exactly one expansion pack. There is not a whole lot of diversity at the snub fighter level.

I would if it was still made by FFG (Attack Wing is worse than JJ Abrams!!), however, I wouldn't have discovered it if not for the fact it is Star Wars

Honestly, probably not. The main reason I picked up xwing was to take advantage of the starwars thing to get some people I know into table top games.

Without the Star Wars IP, I wouldn't have bothered to look at this game twice.

I would rather play Star Trek Attack Wing. Trek is my preferred brand of Star lore. Why don't I and and why am I posting here?

FFG's commitment to quality. I didn't jump in till two months ago, but I have heard nothing but constant praise for the art of Xwing. The game system is super fun, and the models in scale with each other really lends it an air of greatness (even if the epic ships are not on the same scale). But the paint jobs. Sweet god, the detailing.

If STAW looked half as good... if their models made any sense in size relative to each other...If the card and backgrounds didn't use the worse of the LCARS look... Maybe I would be playing STAW. But I can't give my money to such a terrible use of my favorite brand.

Plus, my friends love the Wars, giving me a play group.

I would not have know about it if it wasn't for Star Wars IP,but I would play this gaming system if it was WWII or Babylon 5, Battlestar Galactica because I like the gaming system now. I'm also looking forward to a Star Trek conversion for Armada to play capital ships because I don't think it works in ST-Attack-Wing as well as it does for X-wing.

AMEN!

Would I play this game if it wasn't star wars, probably not. Let me explain why I did get into the Star Wars game:

1. cheap. I have been playing GW (40K) and the prices keep going up for no apparent reason. If I didn't have the Catachan army that I have had for 7 years, I would not start it. Can't convince myself to get into another GW army or game. I started Malifaux.

2. Pre painted. Can't say enough about quality pre painted minis that are being produced for this game.

3. A good established community at the FLGS was a great selling point.

The very first wargame I played was back in 1980 and it was World War I aerial combat using 1/72 scale Airfix planes on 5' high stands. I've loved any form of aerial combat game since. If this game involved any historical aircraft, I'd probably play it. If it was another Sci-fi twist, it would depend on which one. I wasn't keen on Attack Wing although I'm a big Star Trek fan. The quality of models didn't impress me much. If the game was based around Battlestar Galactica, I'd probably be playing. I never got into Babylon 5, so I'd skip that.

If the background appeals, I'll give it a go.

It would still have to be fighter based and packaged the same but yes. Star trek didn't seem interesting to me, but something similar to x wing based on modern military fighters would be awesome, a 40k variant would sell me as well, starfox would also get my attention. The packaging was just as important to me as the star wars, I didn't wanna mess around with booster packs or un built/painted models.

Probably not

I have found that I generally don't like most sci fi ship designs too much, and there is definitely nothing else where I pretty much like every single major ship design in the franchise (even the HWK has really grown on me) like I do with Star Wars

No

Nope. I really like Star Wars. Part of my interest in games comes from understanding the significance of the pieces. For example, right off the bat, I understand the role of X-Wings, the Falcon, and TIEs in the Battle of Yavin simply by watching Star Wars Episode IV. For me, that makes the game more interesting and epic. Having simply generic named ships like "Starfighter A" or "Evil Fighter X" just isn't the same.

Trek is my preferred brand of Star lore.

Hie thee hence, apostate!

Get thee gone, infidel!

Stand not upon the order of your going, but go at once!

No probably not.

Now to clarify, I am still playing the game because it is an awesome system however I would probably never have started if not for the Star Wars theme drawing my attention.

This!

I think the whole concept is utterly brilliant. Good price, prepainted and a very fun game system but yes the fact that it is "Star Wars" is the big draw. This particular game from FFG I must also say address a point I get rather particular about. Attention to detail and scale. The Star Trek game and others fail miserable on this point and I have not given these games a second look.

A huge part of war gaming is involvement. These are just little pieces of plastic, but what they represent is what we connect with and feel attached to. A war game can be complex, balanced, and intriguing on it's own, and that's fine, but in that case it is more of an intellectual exercise, or a math problem.

It goes from problem to game when it (accurately) represents something else. I ask myself, when I watch a movie, can the actions of the characters be represented using the game mechanics. Then I reverse it, would the games that I play make an awesome action scene from a movie.

For me, a game of something has to match mechanically the thing it's trying to represent. Secondly, those mechanics need to be balanced, and offer variety. Of everything. List design, unit selection, strategic elements, tactical elements, options.

So, in answer to the question "Would I play this game if it wasn't Star Wars?" - Yes I would, as long as whatever the game was trying to represent was accurately represented by it's mechanics, and was something that I could connect with.

Warmahordes is a good example of a game that I like the ruleset of (more or less) but just don't enjoy the universe or model aesthetic. I really want to like it. I just don't.

NO! I would not be playing this game if it wasn't Star Wars! Star Wars ships are what brought me into this game to begin with. I f they go to prequel ships, I probably won't play them, maybe not even buy them!

I would be deeper in Wing of Glory if they had more planes honestly! Id rather be doing something historical, but Star Wars is the lure in the end!

Doubtful. I generally don't like dogfighting, save for its place in two universes. Those being Star Wars and Robotech. The flightpath system wouldn't suit Robotech at all, so really its a perfect storm. That said, X-Wing does have a great ruleset and design, so that helps.

As a sidenote, I'd be much more likely to play an Armada style game regardless of theme. I generally prefer the idea of fleet actions in space, rather then fighters. When you can engage folks at the distances reasonable in space, dogfighting is.... an odd choice. It works for Star Wars thanks to the movies and EUs focus on it.

That said, I don't think its nostalgia that keeps the game running. It is an enduring love of the product. At least for me, Star Wars has never really died, I've read books, and comics, and watched TV shows, and even liked some of the Prequel flicks. :P

No probably not.

Now to clarify, I am still playing the game because it is an awesome system however I would probably never have started if not for the Star Wars theme drawing my attention.

This!

No...or at least, I would play it differently. Now, because it's Star Wars, I play with bombers loaded with torps and missiles, even though it's not the smartest thing to do...but it's Star Wars...I put Vader on the table in his Tie Advanced, even though it's a bit daft....but it's Star Wars. And so on. Here's to hoping that FFG will see fit to level the playing field.

I like dogfighting and I used to like Silent Death so I'd probably play it even if it was a non branded space flight game. BUT I wouldn't have collected anywhere near as much or gotten so **** invested in the game if it wasn't Star Wars. I've tried Attack Wing and it's kind of the opposite, my fandom of the shows has held me back since I think it's stupid to have Picard captaining the Romulans vs Kirk captaining the Borg or whatever that the game allows, X-wing is far more respectful of the lore.

Maybe.

I think theme is important,as it needs to be something that has appeal to me, but also to appeal to a wide enough section of the population so I can actually get a game. I loved Wings Of War, but the WW1 theme didn't really appeal to my group of friends, nor did it have the wider appeal of Star Wars. Hence getting a game in proved to be a chore. There is a good base for X-Wing, so getting a game in is fairly easy, and I have even convinced a couple of friends of its merits.
