Would you play this game if it wasn't Star Wars?

By cyclopeatron, in X-Wing

I probably wouldn't. Granted I've grown to really enjoy the game, but for me the initial DRAW was the miniatures themselves, especially the Millennium Falcon. I knew that even if I didn't like the game, Id still have these amazing minis which are WAY better than Micro Machines ever dreamed of being.

Since the consensus seems to be no, this is probably in vain, but I'm going to make one more plug for Wings of Glory WWI.

Guys. Play Wings of Glory. No, it isn't Star Wars. No, it isn't as popular as X-Wing. But it's an incredibly fun game.

Everyone loves flying Interceptors with Push the Limit, right? Everyone complains about how turrets take the skill out of the game, right?

Guess what? In Wings of Glory, all that matters is how well you fly. There are no actions, and there are no turrets (well, there are, but they're not 360 degree death rays). You can avoid getting shot by choosing your maneuvers carefully, and there's even the additional element of altitude, something which is not present at all in X-WIng.

It's an awesome game and I love it to death.

Star Wars was the hook for me. I've never played a table top miniature game before. A co-worker introduced me (hey, it's Star Wars!) and I fell in love with the gameplay. Now, however, if this game were to die out, I'd probably be looking for a replacement, at least once I stopped crying. :P

I'd love to play Wing of Glory. I've been wanting to get into it for years, but I don't live in an area with prospects for developing a critical mass of players. One of the main reasons I was an early adopter of X-Wing was because of its potential for a large player base. In my area (Central NY) X-Wing is now approaching Warmachine/Hordes in popularity, and will most likely surpass it due to its high accessibility and low buy-in (in terms of both time and $). Warhammer has pretty much died out here - it's been replaced by WM/H.

Based on the responses in this thread it sound like X-Wing is roping a whole new group of people into miniature gaming. Although it sounds like a lot of them don't intend on moving past Star Wars theme games at the moment, at least some of them may try out other titles.

Probably not... I don't play Star Trek so that tells me what I need to know lol... It's Star Wars or nothing flight path wise.

Great game, but the thing that makes it worth the money is Star Wars.

You should probably ask the wings of war and wings of glory set.

Also asking that question is like saying would as many people play Descent if it had a my little pony theme.

Or would X-com not be as big of an announcement if it was a different Disney product? (Yes I know Star Wars is now Disney).

Some themes work some don't. Being there hasn't been an update to Xwing vs TIE fighter from the video game. This is the closest I can get in boardgame format.

So I quote spaceballs.......Merchandising.

Nope, it is a Star Wars game and a good one at that. I noticed it because it was a Star Wars board game and I probably would not have given it a second thought if it had been something else. I love flying the ships from the Original trilogy and the ships from the EU.

I feel bad saying this but no. I am interested in Star Wars games in general, even played the CCG years ago. The fact that I can fly around in a miniatures game that is cost effective and make "pew pew pew" noises is just a bonus.

Subject matters to me too though I wouldn't say no to all franchises. Star Trek isn't a big draw for me, but for example if they made a Twilight Imperium Flight Path game.... I would just mail Christian Peterson my credit card.

Probably not. STAW doesn't really interest me because SFB/F&E have owned my Trek mindshare for over 25 years now, and as much as I like the various series, I doubt that will change. WoG just doesn't have the draw for me, and I doubt the rest of my gaming group would have any interest, either. The D&D version looks somewhat interesting, although it would've been much more if they had used a Dragonlance theme.

No, I probably wouldn't be playing this game if it was something other than Star Wars.

I think it's a great game and I think Star Wars is a big reason why it's great. It's just a bonus that this Star Wars game happens to be very fun to play and very fun to customize and has a great community of players and the components are of high quality. But the fact that the core game is about X-Wings and TIE Fighters dogfighting is what drew me to it, and I think that's an important part in why I've had such an easy time finding other players.

I also love World War I dogfighting, but the people who really enjoy that sort of thing are fewer and therefore harder to find.

Nope

I'm also in the Wings of Glory fan club. I love the system and the tactical aspect of it. It's pretty much pure dogfighing without the randomness of dice and the possibility of overbalanced combinations. And the miniatures (especially the WWI plances) are beautiful.

So yes, I would (and do) play the game if it wasn't Star Wars. The main reason I bought into X-Wing was because it was based on Wings of War/Glory which I was already familiar with. Being that it is Star Wars is just icing on the cake. I did look at Attack Wing, but was very disappointed in the miniatures (especially the "Tiny-prise") and the way that Wizkids runs their games. I tried MechWarrior way back and wasn't a big fan, Attack Wing is just a rehash using the Flight Path rules and I don't like it. X-Wing is much more my style and speed.

No.

I might. Star Wars is definitely a draw, but I like the rules, and would definitely a similar game with a different setting. That said, I have no interest in WWI-II or Star Trek, so it would have to be something else.

I didn't even hear about this game until a friend of mine did, and I'm not sure he would have heard of it if it wasn't Star Wars.

However, I have thought many times that the design team could open up way more options with ships and faction if this were based off Homeworld or some other, more open-ended Sci-Fi universe.

So, yes, I definitely would. It's just a question of 'would I have heard of it?'

Yes I would play this game if it wasn't star war. Infact I think it might have been better if it wasn't, then the designers wouldn't be constrained to just using ships from the movies, books and games. But I probably wouldn't have heard of it or noticed it on the shelf at the game store if it wasn't star wars.

I couldn't afford it if it wasn't Star Wars. The fact that it is is what got me into the game despite the hefty price tag. I'd never have done it otherwise, and I wouldn't do it in the future. Why would I, though? I still have this game.

No.

Edit: Okay...

I would if it were something else cool. Like Armored Core.

Totally want a Flightpath mecha dueler.

I love the flight path system, and play Attack wing and X-wing like both for different reasons. I am looking forward to the D&D game also but will probably be more selective with that.

Who do I give my gobs of money to? This is a brilliant idea and it must be done NOW!

The SW setting is great, but I would be open to other settings as long as the same level of attention went into the rules, game balance, and sculptures.

while likely more suited for Armada, I would have loved a version from the Eve Online universe.

I would not play it, or at the very most, only have a couple of ships. Probably just enough so I could play a list I liked and equip a single opponent. That way I could play without having to be a part of the scene

I have to say the IP of Star Wars is what drew me in, and in the miniatures game THAT is huge, the draw in! If this were to be some generic Sci-Fi universe would the game be any less good? No, absolutely not.

However, because of the IP, you draw in far more people who are Star Wars nuts.

So my final answer is compound, Yes, I would still play it but no, I do not think it would be nearly as successful.
