Other Ships: Speculation

By ghaerdon2, in Star Wars: Armada

Armada has more potential for more than two factions than X-Wing, but who knows...might be best to just keep things simple and leave it at two.

You think? I was just musing that lesser powers were far more likely to have their own fighter and small ship designs than they would big star destroyer equivalents.

I'll agree with Forgottenlore on that one.

X-Wing is a squad based star-fighter game. There aren't too many factions outside of the Rebels and Empire that have a range of star-fighter classes (unless you start looking to prequels and EU). Smaller sized capital ships and freighters are more prevalent outside of these two factions.

That being said, Armada will remain a two faction game (for the time being).

Well, there are factions that have both. Factions other than the Empire and Rebellion are either implicit or EU. But even so, they come with both fighters and capital ships.

What sort of factions are you thinking about. Most that I've heard talk about here are Fringe factions - which means smugglers, pirates, and racketeers. There's also the Corporate Sector, which has (IMO the awesome Marauder, which I could see as a huge ship in X-Wing, though it's unlikely, but also the revolting IRD fighters.) I really don't know jack about the Hapans. The Hutts certainly have their line of fighters.

I would love to see the Mon Cal cruisers.

I really want an Imp star deuce so I can paint it red!

I thought Booster Terrik's IMP2 was pink.

Well, again, it would require FFG to go beyond just the Galactic Civil war (which they so far have shown no indication of doing and might not legally be able to do so.), but then they could have the CIS, Republic, etc...

As far as this time period, other factions would be mercs and criminal syndicates (like Black Suns).

I would love to see the Mon Cal cruisers.

No, it's red per I, Jedi. And wookiepedia .. http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/Errant_Venture

If you guys say so...

Expecting Acclamator, Venator, MC-40, and MC-30.

Failing that, an ISD and an MC-80

I always loved the clawlike battlecruiser that the mercenary Cavik Toth used as his flagship in the Jedi Starfighter videogame. A prequel ship to be sure, but hopefully obscure enough so as not to freak Classic purists out too much.

You there.

This comment? Right here? I would shake your hand over it several times over.

Wait.... what???

You want all that prequel nonsense before the Imperial Star Destroyer.

You've gone too far, Captain Lackwit . You've gone too far.

Oh way to ignore my praise. No, I have a solid reason behind it.

Both ships are a similar size to the Victory, one of which is smaller, the other larger but not TOO much larger, and fill completely different roles. Imperials will need a faster, smaller ship capable of equaling the Neb-B and CR-90 right off the bat.

The best options for such would indeed be the Lancer and Acclamator, but the Venator would be very nice for a carrier role, at least, a more dedicated carrier role than say, the Victory. The Acclamator would be capable of pulling moves similar to a Neb-B and would offer the Empire a more flexible in movement vessel, but lower firepower.

Something for game balance purposes, they will certainly require.

It's not a matter of wanting prequel starships. It's a matter of wanting ships that offer balance .

I hit 'like' on that post. What more do you want. A cookie?

No... I know what you're up to. Soon you're going to be sending FFG plead-mail asking for the Jar Jar Binks crew card. I knew the millennial generation was going to be the death of civilization, and you're proof of it.

Dammit! Where did I leave my geritol?

Home One and the Imperator of course. Squads of other little ships (Ys, As, Bs, Squints, Dupes, the like)

There's lotsa different capital ships. Interdictor, Mon Calamari cruisers, theres just so much they can do.

Honestly didn't see the like. My bad. But a cookie would be absolutely wonderful, sir.

But I do stand by the Acclamator being a good choice.

HOWEVER...

This would be the perfect format for the much wanted Vigil.

While the Venator is an older design, I could see it appear but down the road a ways. It has precedent of being an Imperial warship (from the end of EpIII), and would play very differently as it carries a lot more fighters than the ISD or Victory class ships.

For the short term, I see ISDs and MC80s as the largest available ships, as even a ship like the Praetor could be impractical, and the Executor or would be very difficult to scale properly. My best guess would have it at 7 feet long. Besides, there's lots to choose from in ships smaller than 2,000 meters.

I would love to see the Mon Cal cruisers.

Red, red, red!

I just want to paint Palleon's last command ship, the Bloodfin! :D

Space stations, weapon platforms, and sensor arrays

First I'm hoping they put out painted versions of the squadrons so you can replace the one's that come in the starter. I can see non-painted in the starter to keep the price lower but we're so used to excellent pre-painted minis that solid color plastic squadrons may look out of place.

Next hope is that the ships in the starter are available as boosters just like original X-Wing.

Would also like to see painted versions of the Falcon, Slave 1, Imperial shuttle, Yes they will be small but they would still be great. $10 each.

Also need squadron boosters with TIE bombers, interceptors, y-wings, b-wings, a-wings. 3 squadrons in a pack for $20.

Hapans have their own fighter (Miy'til or something) a Cruiser (a Nova supposed to be fast bit bigger than a Neb-b frigate IIRC) and a Battle Dragon ugly as heck IMO but supposed to be the Equivalent of a Imperial Star Destroyer(once again IIRC). I believe the Hapans also used X-wings and had their own bomber variant too.

Expecting Acclamator, Venator, MC-40, and MC-30.

Stop trying to make pre-Rebels happen, it's not going to happen.

Calling it: Armada Epic play: Executor class SSD and Viscount Star Defender

Calling it: FFG please make an Eclipse class! Cue endless stream of scale complaints.

Obviously if a pattern similar to that of X-wing holds true, there'll be a CR-90 pack, a Nebulon-B pack, and a VSD pack. I also suspect we'll see a squadron pack or two (maybe 3 squadrons each, with X-wing, Y-wing, and TIE Fighter packs in the first wave), though I also suspect each Capital ship pack will include enough squadrons to fill their squadron capacity (so the CR-90 will come with 1 squadron of X-wings, and a VSD will come with 3 of TIEs).

We'll probably also see some kind of lighter Imperial ship, a frigate or corvette or something.

Wave 2 will see the ISD, TIE Interceptor and A-wing squadrons, and the first of the Mon Calamari cruisers.

Wave 3 will see some of the more exotic capital ships, as well as B-wings and TIE Bombers.

If you want any clue as to whats coming next I'd say SW: Empire At War is a good gauge. I know at least 2 ships that may come in Wave 1 of Armada but I'll let FFG do the talking for that:)

Precisely why I say the Acclamator is a great choice.
