2014 Canadian SWX National, October 25th, Hamilton ON

By R5Don4, in X-Wing Organized Play

I think we're all losing sight of the most important thing. No matter what we all walk away with Chewie cards WOOT! :)

That is not a true statement. At Gencon, depending if it was first day or second day you stayed. Day 1 5-2's made the cut. If you had 2 losses you stayed. On day 2, there were 5 rounds and players who went 2-3 made the cut.

I was talking about day 3, where the real playing was going on and prizes/cut were at stake, and it was a 64 player field. (62 actually)

The difference between Gencon and any other National Championship was Gencon. You had stuff to do which pulled players away from playing in the top 64 (2). There were people who were winning that dropped. Players were 2-0 and dropped to attend Gencon. Comparing any other National Championship to Gencon's Championship is actually unfair to the US National Championship. If you get 64 in Canada, that would be a great thing for X-Wing. If I could afford it I would come up and play.

Only going to get 5 rounds of Swiss at the most. They are going to jam the quarter final by shortening the rounds.

This is indeed good news!

Round times and tournament structure updated.

New tournament rules updated. Wave 5 is not legal until after worlds (which is in November)

Z minus six days and counting....

Some Michigan players are invading Hamilton this weekend with the intent of ruling the Canadian galaxy ( :P ). They have even been practicing. You guys should give them a laser warm welcome when they get there...

...I mean, take them out to Timmies for a coffee; its going to be a long tourney. :D

P.S. Wish I could have been able to make it. :(

Hey man, easy there, I'm just in it for the Chewie card. Maybe hoping to win more than I lose and go 3-2. :)

BTW, I'm not sure what the registration number is at right now, but I thought I heard something like mid 40s.

Someone earlier was saying, why stay if you have 2 loses. I ran some numbers under the assumption that only 40 people showed up to play, and after 5 rounds of Swiss I think the following scenarios could be possible:

If winners keep winning and losers keep losing

5-0: 2 people

4-1: 5 people

3-2: 13 people

3-2: 13 people

1-4: 5 people

0-5: 2 people

BUT... with 40 people it is possible some 2-1 players could play some 3-0 players in the middle rounds. If the one loss people upset the perfect people we could be looking at:

5-0: 1 person

4-1: 3 people

3-2:16 people

2-3:16 people

1-4: 3 people

0-5 1 person

I'm not sure if I ran those scenarios right on my sheet of scratch paper, but if there is a chance (12) 3-2 people could make it to the top 16 and 4 could make the top 8 then the point is never give up!

I'm really just kidding.

I'm just letting out my frustration at not being able to attend. :D

I am serious about taking you guys out for a cup of coffee in the down time (Timmies). That's just good manners and sportsmanship.

I've met so many good players at the last Regionals that I was really hoping to make it to Nationals and repeat.

Does anyone know who is TO-ing this? I need to get in contact with them to make sure we can get all the lists :-)

Store Wars & Regional Qualifiers:

The Five Canadian Regional Qualifiers winners (Grish Kalshikov, Greg Jackson, Glen Nielson, Rick Sidebotham, and Chris Allen) will have reserved spots, and the sixteen qualifiers from the Store Wars Circuit will have reserved spots that include a FREE game mat! MJ, Im a fan keep it up, may I suggest the number in OP.

So my wife is coming with me to Hamilton and wants to look at the leaves on Sunday.

Are there any locals with recommendations on parks and nature type places to go in the area?

Don't worry man, we'll be collecting all the squad sheets for the annals of 2014 National history.

Oh and I would expect it to be closer to max capacity 60+

See you guys there!

I'm not from Hamilton but close by. This site might be a good starting point to find places to visit: http://cityofwaterfalls.ca/

The Royal Botanical Gardens are just north of Hamilton. It is a collection of gardens with many different colours of leaves there and you can hand feed chipmunks and birds. My wife had a downy woodpecker feed from her hand and it was the first time I ever saw a humming moth.

I don't know who exactly is running the event but can somebody make sure to ask that the squad lists are sent to Major Juggler for his 2014 Nationals thread.
