XG-1 "Star Wing" Assault Gunboat Thread

By FTS Gecko, in X-Wing

Gunboats were in the same 'boat' as Ys and Bs when it came to ionizing ships and hoping they were ignored. Imperials listen about as well as rebels it seems.

"Want all the glory for yourself, huh?"

"You have fired on a friendly ship. CEASE FIRE IMMEDIAFELY OR YOU WILL BE FIRED UPON!"

Yeah, they just fire at you anyway. All those scenes of Imperial and Rebel ships strafing their own cap ships going after a fighter obviously didn't show those cap ship shooting at them with no chance of reconciliation for the rest of the mission.

"Can't let you do that, Star Fox!"

"After performing an attack against a friendly ship, do a barrel roll!"

(also: shameless bump)

Do I remember correctly that, in the PC game X Wing and/or Tie Fighter, etc. if you flew between two enemy capital ships, in trying to shoot you they'd often inadvertently hit each other, which would lead to them attacking each other till one of them was destroyed?

Oh my yes, which can turn into a nightmare if it happens to two friendly ships that are primary mission objectives. Luckily the devs usually spaced out friendly ships for that reason. Still remember rescuing some hyperspace technicians and nearly had a perfect mission except after all enemies had fled one of the secondary or secret mission objective shuttles suddenly got nuked. Turned around just in time to see the Star Destroyer it was trying to dock with splattering its remains with laser fire.

So, are there still people playing XWA Multiplayer?

Would be great :)

I'm not sure it's still supported, is it?

Most likely has private servers. Even Galaxies is still up and running.

Galaxies? Where?

EDIT: found it. Does it include Jump to Lightspeed? (my only interest is to fly ships)

Galaxies? Where?

Base game, no JTL yet. I'm waiting patiently (for now).

Actually, there's a server up running a version of the source code leaked from 2010, and another server running a refined version of the same code that should be up within a week or two. Source code servers have JtL.

Can you send me links to those? I see a bunch running pre-cu but none mention anything about JTL anywhere on their websites.

Btw,what program is everyone using to make these swag custom cards?

Usually Strange Aeons, although some use homemade templates.

Dude, awesome, thanks!

Lambda 2.0?

Last I checked they were no where near done with JTL material.

Yes, I just imagined running through the Nova Orion questline again to help test high-end content, or grinding out the Vortex as part of a group effort to check to make sure all nine squadrons were working. :P

FFG, make it happen!

I still believe.

I still believe.

Now it's a great time (no other canon alternatives for the Empire except even more shuttles).

We've seen Scum Epic. I have hope that FFG can do it.

Dude, awesome, thanks!

No problem!

Never played it. Maybe I need to change that!

I think you do!

Forgot my dvd drive stopped working on my PC (it recognizes maybe 1 out of 10 discs I put in it). Troubleshooting failed so I'll be trying a server on Monday if the new drive delivers on time. Hoping this server actually has JTL (a couple forum posts suggest it might).

The ground game is a lot of fun by itself. I bought the CE when it released but didn't start playing until the week of the CU. It was still fun then. Played through the NGE - had fun, but it wasn't the same and population was rapidly dwindling. Was dancing with my pets as the servers went down for the final time. But if these servers have JTL, then goodbye free time.

Aim for a pre-cu server if given the choice, but population probably matters most. The crafting community is vital to the game.

Although I'm lamenting the lack of a gaming PC at the moment.

So I was pondering Gunboat like ships in other games, and besides a complete lack of actual space shooters and flight sims, especially console based, I'm trying to think of sub ins just out of boredom.

Also because the only game I can play in this murky greymatter dump is Elite Dangerous, which I have little inclination with the four RPGs I have on backlog. Not saying its a bad game, but playing it alone is boring, and I have enough assclowns to deal with on Dark Souls Online.
