Re-staring a Career

By k7e9, in WFRP House Rules

Hi all,

This has been discussed before on the forums, and I have decided to allow my players to enter careers they have previously completed. Instead of the career ability I decided to let them increase their fortune pool by 1 when they did this. One of my players have decided to re-start a career she previously finished so I decided to create a card in Strange Eons to represent the +1 fortune pool.

Instead I ended up making several cards and thought I'd share them with you all.

The first card I call Career Focus, it increases fortune pool size:

Next comes Career Expertise, and you gain it when entering a career for the third time. It allows you to gain one expertise die when spending a fortune on one of the career abilities (from the career you've re-entered):

Lastly came Career Mastery if a player re-enters a career for the fourth (!) time. I used the Seer ability as an inspiration for this card. Career Mastery allow the player to spend a fortune point on a career skill to add a comet to the check, even after rolling.

My thoughts was that these career cards should build on the extra fortune point and add more options for fortune point spends, while at the same time focusing on the career skills. It also made them "generic" as the career skills depend on what career the player re-visits. A Thief with Career Mastery would be very different from a Soldier with it for example.

Lastly I did not want them to be so powerful that other careers would seem pointless, but they should still be useful. As the Expertise and Mastery cards can only be used once per session I feel that they are not overpowered at least.

What to you all think?

It's a very good idea. I also autorize re-entering careers, as it is very convenient for PC who have a strong affinity with it.

I will definitively use your cards (thanks for sharing ;) ).

The only problem I see is if you complete the career 3 times, then change to another career, it might be difficult to keep track of the previous abilities, on wich the card applies.

Thanks.

Initially I intended to make some space on the Career Expertise and Mastery cards so the players could note which career skills the cards applied to. However the rules took up most of the space on these cards. So instead I'll ask my players to note which his/her career skills are on the "career focus"-card to keep track of them when they have moved on into other careers.

This is a reallly nice approach to the problem and I will talk about it with my group. I am a little leary about increasing the fortune pool for a character, but I do like the way it builds on itself.

1 extra fortune point isn't that much of a bonus, and it works well.
The "Order of the Fiery Heart"-knights get the same bonus as their Oath-talent. :)

We did away with the characteristic fortune dice. I grant additional fortune POINTS because they are pretty much worthless anyways..whereas the constant Characteristic Fortune Dice are frankly broken and just promote dice bloat.

Meh, so far it has not been a problem, and I kinda think we like dice-bloat now that we are pretty quick about building pools. Then again as a long time gaming group who played the WEG D6 Star Wars RPG and loved it we kinda get a thrill at roling a bucket of dice, and at least with WFRP we don't have much to add up.
