Played with my roommate last night.
Silas "McManlychest" and "Soldier Boy" Harrigan against Azathoth. Silas was a real globetrotter. His extra action after moving through the seas is really advantageous. Mister Fightymcfighterson's ability to wear down monsters and avoid delay are great too. In fact, he spent most of the game killing critters and closing gates (and getting "skillz") while Captain Thickchest trotted the globe hunting rumors and clues while buying everything in sight, with the occasional monster scuffle to slow him down.
Each of us took our licks and came perilously close to losing our marbles more than once.
Plenty of white-knuckle moments, desperate rolls, untimely setbacks, and knuckle-bumping victories (those rumor cards can be vicious I might add).
Only a couple of times were we sidetracked for rules clarifications or a botched ruling (overall the game ran very smooth with few hiccups).
In the end we won with the doom track sitting ominously on 1 .
Oh, and a shoggoth ate Tokyo. It apparently drinks kerosene with its main course (nine dice, NINE ...one lousy success...which it healed next turn) so we left it to its repast. Shoggoths are mean.
Verdict: terribly fun game, can't wait to play more.
