what's the deal with Eldritch tokens on the Omens Track?

By Krysmopompas, in General Discussion

title says it all...does it do anything? Azathoth has something for when a token is on the green space, but anything else?

Never mind, I got it:)

What was it? I'm curious too. I though it was just to remind you that doom moves up 1 every time you land on it regardless of gates?

When the omen track lands on the eldritch token, you add one to the doom track AND if there is a green comet gate on the board, the doom track goes up again. The eldritch token does not replace the green comet symbol. Many people just place the eldritch token just above and to the side so you can stack them if needed without too much fuss.

Then when you pick up certain Azathoth Research cards, there may be instances where it tells you to add an eldritch token to that spot, or even remove eldritch tokens from it.

It's one of the rules I'm most likely to forget about Azathoth.

That Eldritch Token pile up on the Omen track is really important for Azathoth to have a shot at crushing the investigators, as its his only way to be aggressive against the players compared to the other AOs.

A gate doesn't have to be on the board to advance doom for Eldritch tokens during the Azathoth game either, it happens regardless of gates. Gates naturally advance doom if their star pattern matches.

Should also note that you only add eldritch tokens to the omen track for an Azathoth game. If you fight the other 3 AOs, they have their own way of changing how the game is played. (for those who are reading this and don't own the game)

Well, I have a question about this as well.

I'm going through a second solo of this game as I just got it, and want to clear a few things up before playing it with some friends this weekend;

I'm a little confused by the omen track and Azathoth's setup.

Azathoth's Setup section on his card states:

Setup

Place 1 Eldritch token on the green space of the omen track.

The ONLY green space is clearly the comet-looking symbol on the Omen Track. And the setup clearly states to place it ON it.

Taking all that into account, I understand it REPLACES the green symbol. So that is how I've played it up until now. But now, I got this Mythos card:

"Dimensional Instability" (standard green Mythos card)

Event

Discard each Gate that corresponds to the current Omen and advance Doom by 1 for each Gate discarded.

So, my Omen track is ON the Eldritch token when I must activate the event. The eldritch token is ON the green comet symbol.

No gates with Eldritch sign.

Now what puzzles me, is simply if the Eldritch symbol REPLACES the green comet symbol on the omen track. The Setup clearly states to put it ON the green symbol, not near or close to it.

I've tried looking further into the rules, but can't really seem to clear it up that way.

So either I don't have any gates to discard, thus do not advance the doom counter, or I discard all green comet gates, advancing the doom counter.

Thanks for help.. and if possible, I would appreciate a link or a quote to back up the reason.

No, the token being on the Green Space doesn't replace the Green symbol. For the simple reason that it doesn't say that it does. When attempting to interpret rulebooks, rules should be taken at face value. They say nothing about replacing the green space with an Eldritch token, so you simply add the token, and then trigger effects when that space is reached. There are lots of other components in the game that tell you to place Eldritch tokens on them, and none of them have their text replaced with the token.

The token is merely a marker to show what Gates and effects should occur if the symbols match whichever is the current omen (the one with the eldritch token on it).

I think you might have Azathoth's Eldritch Token confused with the Omen Marker. One of them is used to track the current omen, and one simply sits on the Green space, advancing Doom when it is reached, in addition to the other effects.

GAThraawn, you are correct. It has been a while since I played with Azathoth so I forgot about the extra token that is placed on it. Thanks for the correction.
