What's the most OCD thing you've done for this game?

By SentinelJP, in X-Wing

I've read many instances on these forums of people's OCD causing them to go above and beyond in terms of what they'll do for their X-Wing collection. Whether you're an actual sufferer (if it could be called that) of OCD or just a gamer with an exacting attention to detail. What is the most OCD thing you've done for your X-Wing hobby?

For me? I planned out every ship I was going to buy in order to have what I considered a complete collection. I then custom designed a Battlefoam 720 to fit those exact ships. My plans included having 4 TIE Interceptors (which I already owned) then buying 2 sets of Imperial Aces. The day I heard Imperial Aces was delayed until next year I immediately ordered 4 more TIE Interceptors in order to fill my trays completely. I've also sleeved Every. Single. Card. Even all the Boost Action and Bomb & Ion Cannon Instruction cards etc.

So what's your OCD confession?

Build capital ships from scratch. Rewrite their rules. Rewrite their rules. Rewri...

Repaint ships. Repaint them again. And again.

I really do have clinical OCD.

I'm going to go repaint something.

If my squad has 1 point left and i have 2 rookie Xwings, no R2 astromech for either of them. Either they both get one or they get none

Same for Academy TIEs and that one Obsidian TIE

OMG I do that too.

I should perhaps add that my collection consists only of even numbers of ships. I have, 4, 6, 8 or 10 of each type of ship. I had three Lambdas... had to get a fourth!

I also made card separators for each of the different types of upgrade cards. This involved several hours of printing, cutting, gluing and re-printing until they were just right..... twice! Once for the Rebels and again for the Imperials. (I'll post a pic when I get home).

Does this count?

The death star also turns into the trench but that tables too small.

I forgot to put out my 4 hawks as well. Also got a regional badge, season 2 medalion, and bunch more acrylic tokens.

Oh and the death star is not even complete, im planning to do another section for the full 3x3, more if the play mat size increases with capital ships!

I have a separate Plano tray for my upgrade cards, so I can keep them sorted by type. Each type is, of course, stacked in alphabetical order.

I also keep my number and target lock tokens rubber banded together by number or letter, and the number tokens are separated light/dark.

And by the way, its CDO, not OCD. That way the letters are in their proper order. :)

I have each of my ships necessary parts organized in a separate plano tray section. That is, each TIE Bomber has its movement dial, pilot bases, shields (if any, none for these), target locks, and ship IDs in separate sections. I have separate plano trays for each faction. Each ship type is grouped together, though not alphabetized yet. Each faction has its pilot cards sorted by type and by pilot skill. Each upgrade is sorted by type and cost. Each token is sorted by frequency of use (crit tokens are rare, so they are off to the side). I have a separate plano tray to hold just the ships, again grouped together by faction and type. Lastly, I have a separate plano tray for miscellaneous components, such as rulers, dice, reference cards, stands, etc.

Every time I play, I pull out all of the contents for each ship and place all necessary tokens next to the respective ship with spares to the side. When I finish playing, I put these things back where they came from. I only place target locks on the table; everything else goes on the respective pilot card. I do this the same every time because if I don't, it feels wrong.

This might sound laborious but it means I can usually setup/clean-up in 5 minutes.

I have organized this collection of about 24 ships 3 times, each time to maximize setup and cleanup. If our games go until out FLGS closes, we need to clean up in a hurry. Less time I spend during setup and clean up is more time spent playing.

I do this for every game I play (such as BattleLore and Descent).

By the way, this is not OCD. The NIMH says that OCD behaviors are typically senseless, unpleasant, and distressing to the patient. I rather enjoy organizing my games; it's like a real life of Tetris.

I am in the process of photo-copying the maneuver dials so I can print paper ones out and stick the two pieces together with those brass folding tack thingies. The original dials will go into storage so that they never wear out.

You could print those, laminate them, then use dry erase markers.

The most OCD thing I did, in terms of things an actual OCD person might do, is organize the squadron markers by number and put color-coded rubber bands around them. That was more for ease of organization and more streamlined setup than anything else, though.

I also have my fleet divided between large ships (Rebel), large ships (Imperial), small ships (Rebel), small ships (Imperial), tokens.

All I've done so far is organize the upgrade cards I have into two decks: one for secondary weapons and titles, the other for everything else, and each category is from lowest to highest point value when they come face up. I might rearrange it when I get my ships in tomorrow.

Does painting numbers on and names on the back of your dial and when choosing maneuvers matching to the numbers on the stem of the ships?

Spent $1,000 in four months...on toys, in blocks of $250 each month...

My ms ocd thing is token counting, even if ive not had a game, just checking not lost any, oh and trying to spell swear words with target locks on ships.

Wikipedia defines OCD as "an anxiety disorder characterized by intrusive thoughts that produce uneasiness, apprehension, fear, or worry; by repetitive behaviors aimed at reducing the associated anxiety; or by a combination of such obsessions and compulsions."

According to that definition, the most OCD thing I do in relation to X-Wing is to check the BGG and Fantasy Flight forums over and over again to see if there are any new and interesting posts. :\

Ohhh ... you converted one of the firesprays into Krassis Trelix' ship?

Would you plz post some detailed pics with this ship? :)

Edited by TheRealStarkiller

Does detail obsession count? Adding the flux channelling vanes on a fighter hyperdrive motivator even though it is almost entirely inside the ship and therefore does not get seen. Or adding the aux power cables even though they are under the main power cables and are invisible. I tried to make my personal X Wing with S foils that worked but it was too fragile, and finally i made a few versions of my fighters and smaller craft with open frame cockpits and internal detailing so that with a bit of clear resin one could see the ship cockpit interior. But on this scale the resin just blurred everything so it was a lost cause. I have had to throttle my fiddly bit obsession down and it is not easy *L*

Well, as a long-time modeler with experience working in mechanical systems, I think you were probably doin' it wrong. ;)

Here's what I would have done:

For the wings, create a hinge. I'd make four or five identical pieces of plastic made using two strips of styrene each, then drill a hole in them dead center, line them up on a pin made from brass, glue and pin them to the wings, then slide them into the body and cap off the end with the S-foil actuator assembly.

For the cockpit, instead of resin, cut a canopy out of the thin, clear plastic the box is made from. Use a paper model as a template, and use white glue or Crystal Clear to attach it to the model.

For the record, lit engines are also a possibility by using surface-mount LEDs and magnet wire. The power source is a coin battery hidden in the base with a resistor and a switch right up next to it.

Oh man, now I want to build a fully articulated and lit X-wing miniature . . .

Yeah yeah MF... I'm sure you can get the S-Foil to open... What I'm wanting to know is how you are going to motorize it?

Oh stop, you're going to make me crazy.

Actually, I'm already crazy at the moment. I had just finished the hinge for my X-wing and was putting superglue on the pins that will hold the wings in place when the tube splattered all over the joint . . . I know I have a bottle of superglue remover around here somewhere, but as I share this basement with a crazed woman who thinks "clean and organized" means "cram as much crap into the corner as possible", I am at a complete loss as to where it is. I just *know* that all it will take to get that mini-project back on track is to squeeze a drop or two on the joint and work it free, clean up the excess glue, then finish gluing the pins in place and then put the hinge in the hull and the wings on the hinge.

I hate when a project grinds to a halt just because of a lack of a certain thing.

We could illuminate an xwing by casting it in clear resin with a light source inside. Just paint over the parts you don't want lit. The power source can be in the base.

Obsessive <> OCD

People treat OCD like it is a positive character trait they "admit" to having. Anyone who has dealt with actual, diagnosed OCD will tell you it is exhausting and definitely NOT positive.

That being said, carry on my obsessive friends, and enjoy your detailed hobby involvement.
