Random bounties (WARNING: contains very long lists)?!

By bladerunner_35, in Game Masters

Hey.

I found the Random Loot table ( http://community.fantasyflightgames.com/index.php?/topic/88572-loot-table/ ) by Kainrath and really liked it. Generally I dislike random tables but the free form wheeling and dealing of Edge of the Empire's narrative touch makes it work.

Therefor I have started to clobber together a Random Bounty table. I am designing it specifically with Edge of the Empire/The Outer Rim in mind but also want to keep the possibility for really crazy stuff there.

I mostly need help with the "Last seen on..." column. I just don't know enough of the area in or around the Outer Rim to be able to fill it out. If possible I want it to be "Tatooine-centric" meaning that planets around that part of the galaxy make up for most of the entries.

Any help, comments, critisicm or suggestions are welcome. Just please do not argue about the merits of random tables. Feel free to do that in another thread however!

The table is very rough so far and designed as a tool for the GM. As such no bounty will be openly posted by "The Black Sun" even if it in practicality is the Black Sun behind it.

Edit: Table removed, see this link for the new version: https://drive.google.com/file/d/0BwuZ9tEYfNZvc2lLOEFtWEhxWkk/edit?usp=sharing

Cool idea, but the numbered list doesn't appear to be formatted correctly. You should consider doing this in Excel, so that people can tweak it for their own needs, and also see how the formatting should look...

Count me interested!

Well of course! I did say the the tables are still very rough.

I only came her for some feedback and ideas. However, it does look like I'll have to finish them on my own. When I do I'll post a link here for you.

Hmm... It's pretty good, but there are some issues. But that would make sense, considering it's still working out the cinks and such.

The problems I see are two: one is an easy fix of a bit of rerolling for if the Black Sun will pay you 100000 credits because the just want to see someone again. The other is if you rolled high on who wants the bounty and they were wanted for something that increases who they're wanted by. I'd suggest adding some more serious groups in the above-hundreds (that's where I'd put the Black Sun and other deadly organizations that could get you killed just for thinking bad about them).

Pretty good, though. Definitely a good fix from the other list. My only other complaints would be to replace all of the unknowns with petty crimes that greatly reduce bounty, and put 'unknown' as a high result that increases bounty. If they won't even tell you what the guy did wrong, then they must be dangerous, which means bounty hunters will demand higher fees and possibly insurance for if it goes wrong. I mean, insurance will be useless if they're dead, but they might have connections. Maybe their boss will be losing out if this guy fails the job. The next thing would be to make the 'last known locations' more generic. Not every villain is some big hotshot from an important, known location, I'd throw in some 'related to group' inserts, meaning they came from somewhere that connects to a group member and thusly may connect to the character directly (comes from one guy's home world, may be connected to his family), and also some random planets that are pretty backwater. Have mor notorious planets at the top, and maybe list some entries as 'from this planet, at a known location,' and keep a list of spontaneous planets at the bottom and I'll be a happy camper.

Again, it's early in the process, and so far, so good.

I like your suggestion to add some heavier groups beyond the 100 range in the Wanted By column. I wasn't really keen on removing the possibility to roll criminal groups below the 100 either so I've split up their results between the normal unmodified organisation below 100 and the more serious stuff that gives + on Bounty above 100.

Well, personally I imagine that the employer often do not tell the bounty hunter all the details. I do not mind adding some petty crime that substracts from the Bounty at the beginning from the list though.

Adding Related to group to "Last seen on" is a very good suggestion. However, I do specifically not want to make a more generic list. I want it to be Tatooine centric as I wrote.

My hope is that other players will modify my original table with their own columns for Last seen on or Wanted by or whatever.

Great lay out... I'm going to modify mine so that every other row is highlighted.

Question- A few of them say a contract with a hutt? How does that work?

Yeah, the "final" version will have some more bells and whistles - it just got tedious to add lines or highlights to the table while adjusting the columns.

Not sure exactly what you mean by "a contract with a hutt"? I'll check it out.

Roll 91's reward says "a one year contract with Jabba the Hutt"

Just wondering how that would work>>!

It's just one of those random things that, to me make random tables more than just a simple tool. Hopefully it'll get the creative juices of the GM going.

Got ya so it's going to be the GM's Tool to make something random bounty! Got ya thanks.

Ah right! I figured it's what's on the box. If the hunter brings in the bounty he is "rewarded" with a one year bounty hunting contract for Jabba! It is not exclusive though so the actual value varies, although I imagen the hunter would be on retainer. Having a bed and three meals a day - and the rep of having worked for the biggest Hutt around!

I like the part where your 'reward' is kind of like a permanent, undeniable requirement. You get the PRIVILIGE to be a resident at Jabba's Palace, where you've got a higher chance of death.

Exactly!

And if the resulting bounty is too crazy or dangerous the PCs can just continue scrolling down the list for more bounties. That gives me a little leeway to add some fun over-the-top stuff to the table.

Alright! I think it's done. Well, as done as I am going to make it for now. There's sure to be some oddities with it but it did it's work well enough when I tried it out a few times.

It is a tad cumbersome to use with the various modifications on the rolls but it's not a major hurdle to coming up with quick bounties on the fly.

I also like the fact that its easy for the PCs to "adjust" their search pattern and only search for bounties in a certain area for instance.

I hope there's some GMs that will enjoy to use the Random Bounty tableTM! And if not I hope to see a few hax! ;)

Edit: I forgot to add lines and colour for ease of reference. Here's the new and improved file:
