Dave Filoni says Stormtroopers suck

By ErikB, in General Discussion

There are EU bits that say Stormtroopers know how to fight but I don't see much reason to pay attention to them.

Okay, I'll bite - what leads you to this conclusion? And I'm not asking flippantly, I mean it sincerely - what on-screen evidence has you forming the hypothesis that Stormtroopers are weak in combat?

Him being right leads him to that conclusion, obviously.

He gets to choose which bits of the EU count as being accurate, no one else does.

He does? Holy crapping cow, Batman! How did he attain that power? O_O

It's a 25 point talent in the Nerd: Sci-Fi career tract. Very difficult to get to.

I may not but Dave Filoni does. Thats him in the podcast in the OP saying Stormtroopers suck.

However, you are parroting his beliefs, and since I cant talk to him, you get to defend his thesis. What exactly in the six movies makes you back that horse. Why are the stormtroopers ineffectual in combat?

Nah, I'm sure Davey boy loves him some Stormtroopers. What a wimsical scamp he is for saying otherwise, that naughty sausage!

Tarkin isn't a rogue element but a typical son of the Empire.

Yeah, even this, your basic premise, is false. Dave Filoni, in your own link, compares Clone Troopers to Stormtroopers. He states Clone Troopers are better soldiers on average then Stormtroopers. Most will agree with you on that. He states the Clone Troopers are more indepedent thinkers then the "automatons" that are Stormtroopers. He then finishes with the quote, "It doesn't mean they aren't effective, they are".

Where in that does he say Stormtroopers "suck"? You are completely twisting what he said for your own agenda. When speaking of the Stormtroopers' ability he simply says Clone Troopers on average are better, but Stormtroopers are still, "effective" soldiers. Suck?

Way to twist words to fit your argument Trekkie. You did Dave Filoni a disservice with your misinformation.

Eta: I think most here would agree with what Filoni is saying while disagreeing with what you have been saying. Yet you claimed his support for your arguments? That is pretty telling. I suppose you can only blame us for not listening more closely to your link earlier and assuming you weren't misleading all of us.

I too figured that Vader was a mostly unseen hatchetman for the Emperor. Keeping him out of the public eye would help to maintain the illusion that the Galactic Empire was a lot more benevolent than it truly was. When Vader did make an appearance, he probably had to choke a b!tch or two to get some people to recognize that they shouldn't mess with him.

Pretty cool images. I guess I never saw Vader as being that...visible though.

Within a few months of the destruction of the DS, Vader was stumping on Naboo. (At least, according to the dates on Wookiepedia.) Apparently explaining why they were being nationalized.

Much of the EU seems to be built around the assumption that Vader is well known, almost a boogie-man.

In the EU (not so much a fan) is he called DARTH Vader? What do people think that first name means? Just a normal first name and there has somehow been complete suppression of any knowledge of "Darth" being a title for the evil Sith? His sinister outfit is explained how? I'm going with the assumption that the Emperor continued from the end of the Clone Wars with the idea that he was the savior of the Republic/Empire, a good guy, and didn't "come out" as a Sith.

I always assumed he was a secretive right-hand man of the Emperor which only the top echelons of the Imperial military/government were aware about and feared. There were I'm sure rumors of an evil boogie-man working for the Emperor, some saying he was even a Sith lord, but most (due to Imperial disinformation) would just assume that was wild propogranda being spread by rebel scum.

When the Galactic Empire started, knowledge of the Sith was all but gone except within the Jedi. And the Jedi, even at their height were myth in many parts of the galaxy. In wiping out the Jedi they made any knowledge of the Sith even more remote. So if even one person knew what the title, Darth, meant, no one would probably believe them. All most would know is he is a scary representative of the Empire and if he is called in, you know you are in trouble. He was wearing black, but so were many soldiers and officers in the Imperial Military, both Army and Navy. Darth Vader's sealed suit was different, but it was not so different from the stormtroopers of the 501st that he was usually with.

His sinister outfit is explained how?

Because wondering around in sinister outfits choking people is the Empires whole MO and a lot of the reason the galaxy is glad to see the back of them.

Again with your Rebellion propaganda? Darth Vader sacrificed himself for the Empire. Do not besmirch his name.

I've worn my not-so-obvious Darth Vader necktie to criminal court before. When people took my bait and asked why, assuming it was some pro-fascist cop issue, I (with obvious humor & sarcasm) tell them how Anakin/Darth is the most extreme representative for criminal rehabilitation possible. He was the ultimate criminal, a massive serial killer, who was still able to redeem himself in the end. "Even Darth turned his life around, your meth-addict thieving client has hope!"

So, I cant help but notice that you keep dodging this simple question. Are you unable to back up your arguments?

Of course he is.

Erik B; "Because Luscasdisney says so... Or well they don't really but I kind of feel like something along these lines can be heared on a podcast by Filoni and it is something I feel really strongly about so I'll just misquote him anyway!"

I think it is the scene at the end of the movie where the Stormtrooper is playing a xylophone made out of Ewok heads that really cements their unparalleled fighting prowess.

No wait...

Oh you mean they lost a fight after years of dominating the galaxy so that means they suck...

Like Foreman sucked at boxing because Ali K.O.ed him in Africa? Or was it that Ali used a tactic on him that no one ever had before?

Oh you mean they lost a fight

To Ewoks .

They also fail to capture Luke Skywalker for Vader or prevent the Rebels in general from slipping away from Hoth. And the Imperial Military in general can't prevent the Rebels from destroying two Death Stars, despite the rebels being ostensibly led in to an ambush both times. If that is an ambush, I hate to see how they perform in a fight they weren't expecting!

Did you even see the movies??? I don't think I would enjoy watching your version of the movie at all.

I think I saw the same version Dave Filoni did.

So, Erik, again you're ignoring questions people are asking that might actually strengthen your position. Be ye a wee man unable to back up your senseless prattle?

Think I'll codename my Stormtroopers 'ErikB's, and make them true lovers of the Empire.

Pretty sure you didn't.

Erik said: I think I saw the same version Dave Filoni did.

Nah... that was a hallucination, you even "heard" things Filoni didn't say... Good on you, go get some anti-psychotics and be rid of those symptoms. Or a good exorcism might help if you're so inclined.
