How is this for a custom Battle Foam layout?

By SentinelJP, in X-Wing

Hi all,

I'm building up my fleets steadily and I've decided that none of Battle Foam's pre cut Star Wars trays are quite what I'm looking for, often too many of one ship, and not enough of another.

So I've designed my own custom trays and since I'm still a newbie to this game, I'd love to know what some of you veterans think of the layouts? I haven't yet bought all of the ships (Wave 1 for example), but this represents what I'd like my final fleets to look like. Do I have too many or not enough of anything? I'd appreciate any suggestions before I commit to the designs.

In addition to this I'm getting two of the standard component trays, so hopefully I'll be able to keep everything in a single P.A.C.K. 432 bag.

You are crazy...like a few of us here. Yeah three to six of the small ships is a good choice I think. The layout looks fine. I would get a tray with nothing in it but Ties and Tie Interceptors.

I think you have covered all your bases but you might need more TIE and Interceptor spots. I never anticipated having 9 TIE's or that they would release the Imperial Aces set which will be at least 4 more Interceptors.

Why not use TIE Bomber slots for TIE Interceptors and TIE Advanced? In a 2" layer, they will all fit, and they take up less space. Then you can use an array of the same holes and fill it with whatever as your fleet grows.

hmm i'm planning on buying some of these custom foams too, I've decided to wait until the large ships come out early next year..

I'm thinking 4-6 of each rebel fighter is plenty (you can really only use 4 in a standard 100 point game, with some additional room for upcoming aces). As for the imperials.. I'll probably stick with the same rule, add 2 to what you can actually field in a 100 point game. If you really start to run out of room, just order a new layer of foam..

Thanks for all the suggestions! I was wondering if I had room for enough TIE Fighters. I might have to rethink my design a little. I actually already have 6 TIE Bombers though, so I need those slots. (I couldn't help myself, they're so cool!)

I plan to get 4 standard TIE Interceptors and then 2 packs of the Imperial Aces. Would 8 Interceptors not be enough?

I've made this foam for my Wave 3 ships: It' a THICK layer (3") so I will have LOTS of room for dials and upgrades cards to when combined in my soon to arrive P.A.C.K. 432 case with the prefab layers for Wave 1/2 used in my current P.A.C.K.. 216:

Those are a bit busy, I dislike thin barriers between the cut out shapes. I want the trays sturdy for stacking purposes. I didn't save a pic of my custom layout but it arrives tomorrow. I will get some pics when possible. I fit 10 small ship and 3 large ships in my layout.

Can we get a visual confirmation on this from anyone?

I had the same thought but I don't want to be the one to try it, only to discover that the tie bomber skots are a little too loose/short for the interceptors, or don't quite fit the advanced comfortably.

Where are you going to put all the cards and bases?

As I said at the end of my original post, I'm also ordering two of the dedicated components trays. ;) My plan is to fit all four trays into a P.A.C.K. 432 bag. I like to have an all-in-one storage solution for my games, when I travel I want everything I have for that game in the one pack. I don't like keeping things in separate places, it feels disorganised to me. I'm a little OCD with things like that.

I'm right there with you-- I like keeping everything together. Will there be enough space for all the cards? Those component trays look thin (1.5" - 0.25" bottom) and ~40 ships worth of cards is a big stack (for pilots and even more so for upgrades).

Before buying the foam checkout this downloadable pdf on BGG that somebody did: http://boardgamegeek.com/filepage/89609/how-to-best-use-battlefoam

This gives some important ideas and critiques of the standard layout. For example, a central finger hole is really important for getting A-Wings out of the foam. Another is that he says: "Not using the TIE/fighter’s template and just doing a rectangle. The pre cut shapes are cool and all, but the TIE/f ones are a SUPER waste of space. [same for the X-Wings] If I could do it again, I would simply do another 1.5” by 3.5” rectangle and be able to stack 6 x wings standing up with their noses pointed skyward"

I would recommend the empty rectangle for a number of ships and for future ships. Also keep in mind you can stack multiples like the Y-Wing and A-Wing in a single slot.

So, please pardon the stupid question - but I've looked at the battlefoam site, and didn't see how to create these custom trays. Can you post a link or instructions describing how to build these? I think this is an awesome idea and am interested in doing this as well.

Thanks!

About half way down you see the link:

Once there select size - default is okay.

The Thickness - 2" required for Lambda Shuttle

The toward the bottom you'll see "Other Game Shapes"

Star Wars: X-Wing is there in drop down.

Thanks, man!

Do you know, do the trays come with some kind of carrying case, or do you need to purchase those separately?

If you pick them out as above: you'll save the image and upload when you buy whatever case you want.

Cool. Do you know if they have Star Wars bags?

Got any of the ships? Measure them. It's pretty obvious.

I use A-Wing slots for TIE-Advance ships currently. The Interceptors kinda/sorta fit in there. That's in a 1.5" layer. The TIE Bomber slots are huge compared to that.

After reading a lot of the great feedback in this thread I decided to modify my Imperial Battle Foam tray. I managed to squeeze in 2 more TIE Fighters for a total of 10 without losing any of the other ships.

I won't initially be buying as many as I thought, maybe only 2 TIE Advanced. But I figured I might as well keep the slots for everything in case I decided to expand things in the future.

Anyway, here is the new Imperial tray layout. My Rebel tray remains the same. I made sure neither of the trays had any red slots which indicates they are too close together. Every slot turned out grey, it took some doing though! Ha!

One thing you might consider is that some ships stack safely and easily (TIE Advanced, Y-Wing, and maybe others). While others do not (especially the TIE Fighter). So, if you ever add more TIEs, you'd run out of space, whereas you would still have room for some other ships. So, I would add a few more of those that don't stack just to be safe (even if that means you have to have 1-2 less of those that do stack). Just something to think about. Given there are more TIE Interceptors coming out, who knows how many of each we'll end up with.

right now i have the battlefoam that fits in the starter box. i am able to stack my x-wings on top of each other. and i have my intercepters on top of and in the y-wing slots as i only have one y-wing.

Stick a small bit of foam between ships to pad them.

Just thought I'd update to say my Battlefoam P.A.C.K. 720 Custom Bag arrived today!

Here it is (almost) fully loaded. My last TIE Bomber arrived just after I took the photos today, and I have yet to add 2 more YT 1300s, 2 more Firesprays and 1 more Lambda in addition to two Imperial Aces expansions when they're released.
