I have both the "Likes" and Messages icon.

Do you have any sort of Javascript blocking running, Tom? Some extensions/add-ons? Maybe test with a different browser?

FireFox with noscipt set to alow and old Internet Explorer show it.

No idea how I managed to disable it, but all's good now. Re-activating it made my notifications come back, too. Evidently I have a lot.
