Hulking?

By Ansalagon, in Deathwatch Rules Questions

Say... what would the difference be between two characters if one of them was hulking and the other was not?

The rules i could find said

+10 to hit the character

-10 to concealment

+1 to agility for the purpose of calculating movement

but.. is that all? what about unarmed attacks? Bonus to strength against smaller opponenets? or is that it?

Attacking a hulking target does not provide a benefit to hit in melee. This is because size modifiers only apply to ranged attacks. There are no other bonuses for being Hulking, just because you are really big does not necessarily translate to being really strong etc.

I feel I need to add: Space Marines are only Hulking when wearing Power (pg 161, DW Core) or Terminator armor ("Terminator Armour incorporates all the systems of standard Astartes power armour," pg. 164, DW Core). Out of their armor, or when wearing armor that is not power or terminator, they are only average sized. The Black carapace removes the +10 to hit bonus when wearing Power Armor, but not when wearing Terminator Armor (infered from the penalties to speed and agility).

And so, for that matter, are non astartes. Most other 40k RPGs that allow normal humans access to power armour make the wearer count as Size (Hulking).

But, yeah. Size is - speed aside - entirely a drawback. However, anything with a larger size (armoured troops, tryanid warriors, etc) usually comes with high strength as well. It's just not compulsory.

This is the reason it's often worth having a play in scout armour. No stealth penalties for the armour value or the size, and all sorts of fun toys like cam-cloaks and stealth tech and your kill-team become bloody ninjas...

I'm pretty sure that different and contradictory answers have been received from FFG regarding whether size gives abonus to hit in melee or not...

From FFG,

"As per the rules on page 249 or the Deathwatch Core Rulebook, size is only a factor when making ranged attacks.

Thanks for your question,

Right. And if you search through this forum, you'll find that another FFG employee gave the opposite answer when asked the same question.

Burden of proof is on you, not me.

Provide a quote of this opposing answer you reference if you want it addressed. Until then, the issue of bonuses to hit large targets is resolved satisfactorily.

Oooh look confusion of subjective feeling of resolution with actual objective resolution.
