Some Photos of stuff, you know Slave-1 & Interceptors.

By Rodent Mastermind, in X-Wing

After some discussion I'm seriously considering Gavin Darklighter for the last one, there is no picture of it online, but there is a description in the novels.

"No longer in New Republic service, the fighters were given new, individualized paint jobs and transponder codes; Darklighter's X-wing was repainted to resemble Tatooine's top predator, the Krayt dragon." ...

I could do something really interesting with a scale like camo and the WW2 style teeth nose art.

I have issues with the matte varnish too. What do I need to do to get rid of the white residue?

Try respraying with a Gloss Varnish, it seems to redissolve it. Then carefully use a medium size brush (not a big brush) and paint the panels slowly with a paint on Matt Varnish, don't do what I did originally and try to paint it fast as it can pool, if you paint each part individually you can make sure it's evenly spread and isn't pooling. Then leave to dry and then look at it and see if any bits need a second coat.

And a sample card for using Tycho in a X-Wing, I quite like how the image came out, it took a little bit to get it together and looking right.

Bit random as this thread is more or less my hobby blog, but that does look fairly awesome. I am quite a bit away from fielding a force that big.

Great stuff Rodent! Looking forward to seeing Tycho, inspired me to try some painting again.

Tycho is coming along, but something hasn't entirely clicked yet.. Gavin is looking great though, the Reptile scales, teeth and eye work well, and I'm liking the drag color scheme on it.

First of all Rodent, I want to say that your work is very impressive and inspirational.

I have a couple questions:

1- Which type of brass tube did you use to modify the stands?

2- Could you give us an estimation of how much you've work on a project, the Wedge's x-wing for example?

Thank you :)

Hmm.. er... Not sure on the type of rod, just the stuff you get from model stores, looks like 1.5mm and 3mm tube. But I would take a base with you like I did and check sizes against a base..

With the Silicon, glue, greenstuff the bases ended up looking a bit messy, so this week I've been spraying them black and repainting them with stars and Nebula, then giving them a gloss varnish.. they look SO much better, it ties everything together..

Wedge I did in a day.. but it took most of a day.

I've also been making bases for my Asteroids this week, I've cut out the shapes of the Asteroids in the set in Plasticard, I've then drilled a hole for a GW flying stand.. I've then built up a small amount of greenstuff/milliput mix, coated the stand in Vasaline and then pressed it in, then smoother out the putty into the base.. once dried I've sanded in down so it was fairly smoothed then put a coat of hard drying water effect to smooth it down even more... Once that is dry I'm putting a thin layer of plastizote foam to stop slipping and spraying black..

I'll paint them up when ready, I'm thinking of adding some sensor sweeps in green to make them much more obvious when the Asteroids aren't in place.. The idea that you can remove the Asteroid easily when there are collisions.

Thanks for the information man, it helps.

OK, I know I've been a bit quite on this thread, I've been getting Dials marked up, Making more bases & brass rods, painting Bases, Making bases for my Asteroids, Converting B-Wings up to rotate etc... But no much painting.

I'm currently working of Tycho and Gavin still... but I've stated playing around with colours for my B-Wings

I'm really liking the blue on the left what are your opinions.

Of those 3 I like the blue one best as well. I also like the dagger squadron look from the pilot card

I dig the blue, for sure. Waiting to get a better blue to do my B-wings somewhat similarly

Curious, how'd you do the checkers on Wedge?

WOW.. I may do some repaints, but Rodent, you do fine art, I wish I had skill with an airbrush. I do ok with the paints and brushes I use, but I am genuinely impressed with your work. Thanks for sharing this with us.

Curious, how'd you do the checkers on Wedge?

Painted it.

I laid down the base yellow, then worked out from the center a row at a time.

1. I started by painting stripes of green,

2. I then plainted a yellow line down either side to make them square

3. Then I painted the are between each of the original squares green, Best way to do this is paint 3 lines and fill in.

4. Then again I painted a yellow line on either side to square off the green squares.

5. Now for each pair of rows I painted black lines in to form the edge of the check area. Again it's probably best to paint a thin line and then fill in the area on the other side of it.

6. Then it's time for the next set of green squares.

7. Paint a yellow line on either side

8. Paint in a black line

9+ repeat.

Well Tycho finished, Will be dipping my B-Wings in Brake Fluid to clean of some of the paint tomorrow, so they will be the next thing I work on, though this time I'll probably be working on all 3 at the same time.

Do you have a link of where you bought the magnets for the B-wing stand modification?

The back of mine snapped today, figured no better time to try and mod it.

Just look for them on E-bay or your local game store they should have them.. I think Rare earth magnets are what they are called.. the ones i got at my local store months ago are MAGCRAFT.. I did the same thing then was surprised to see others have done it to..
