Noob questions

By Qrest Fourstar, in X-Wing

Could someone help me out? Long story short, have everything(so far) I've only gotten to attend 2 different play sessions due to time restraints and have a few questions.

First, The first play session I attended, the guy told me to laminate my pieces(my box set is open but unpunched and all my ships are still boxed) I bout some 3M laminating sheets but is that the best?

Second play session, a guy had rebl and imperial themed boxes for his cards. He said he got them online, printed and assembled them. Could someone direct me to them?

As for the cards, One player had those nifty plastic sleeves for them. I did notice the little number 1's on the back of the packages, but couldn't find that number box on any packages to buy the right ones. Which ones should I get? I like the one that FFG has with the SWSE posters on them, but do they work for XW? I also need smaller ones for the ship cards.

Thanks for the help. Sorry about the newb questions.

did u mean laminate the movement templates? or the cards?

its a good idea to sleeve pilot cards but laminating isnt needed imo.

i havenet seen the themed boxes my end of the world (NZ)

Laminate the cardboard pieces; that's pretty hard core to me. To each their own I guess. I personally don't have my cardboard pieces laminiated. However, I'm not super play heavy on X-wing. To me, it sounds like this is a matter of preference and cost. How much do you want to spend to protect your X-wing stuff. I personally just buy the regular FFG card sleeves for all my cards and put all the X-wing stuff in a tackle box. It makes things pretty portable and adqueate protection for me.

Yeah, I don't know about laminating anything, not quite my style. As for the sleeves, if you mean the upgrade card size, the sleeves FFG makes for this size card are called "Mini European Board Game Sleeves" and has FFG product #FFS02. I also use the FFG movie poster sleeves for the pilot cards (SW for rebels, ESB for imps), no complaints there. They are a little pricey, though. Lastly, if someone was using tuck boxes they printed online, it's probably a good bet that the file they downloaded was posted on the X-Wing Miniatures Game page on BoardGameGeek, as seen here:

Just scroll down to the 'Files' section and browse for a bit, there's probably some tuck box templates in there. Hope this helps.

He laminated the turn dials because they get worn so easy.

need the sleeves for both sizes of cards.

And they were nifty little boxes that held the cards. One had the rebel emblem the other the imperial cog.

Get Con-Tact clear shelf paper and use the sprues that the dials came in as a template to trace the outline of the back dial (the one with the movements printed on it). The purpose is only to prevent wear on the dial from all the spinning. No need to laminate anything if you ask me.

Another improvement that I do to all my bases:

No need to laminate the turn dials. Just spray them with clear matte finish and they'll be fine. I did this with mine after they started to show wear, and it stopped it immediately (I used Krylon Matte Clear, FYI).

Yes, this. And it's so much easier to do!

For my pilot cards, I use KMC Perfect Fits. I play Magic so I have a ton of these, but you can typically find these at any game store that stocks Magic, and they're usually aout $5 for 100 sleeves. You can get fancy and get Star Wars themed sleeves. I know there are Han sleeves, and I can imagine there are Imperial themed sleeves.

For the upgrade and damage cards, I found the European MIni sleeves that FFG puts out are too big, but ultimately feasible.

Deck boxes, again, you can source at your LGS or find online. I'm sure I've seen SW Themed ones

Another thing you should do is go to Lowe's or Home Depot and pick up some 5/16" nylon washers for your maneuver dials. Get one for each dial and use them as spacers between the two dials. These will make the dials easier to turn and protect the maneuver artwork between the dials from rubbing off. If you've assembled the dials you can pull the plastic center post apart with 2 needle nose pliers gripping each end and gently twisting them loose. After you insert the washer between the dials on the center post you can reassemble the dial. After the reassembly you might find that the post may be loose after putting the washer in and not stay together. To fix this just put a small amount of superglue (you don't need much) in the bottom of the female end of the center post and then reassemble the dial. I add the superglue even if it's not needed....not going to be taking the dials apart after all so why not.

So let me get a handel on this 2 core set to start that I understand. I only can buy 1core set for now so what should I get next. I am just starting out too.

If you're looking to keep it simple, pick up a Falcon and the X-Wing expansion. That way you can put together a solid list with only a few more ships.

Are you trying to field just for you or build a few so you and your friends/family can play w/o purchasing their own.

The Millennium Falcon is nice and very easy to play. Some say too easy since you just fly back and forth and fire at everything with your 360 Arc. However if you want to play then Rebels 2 (two) X-Wings and a Falcon is a tough little package and easy to play.

If you want a little of both sides a 2nd core is still likely your best bet. I know you said you can't get that yet but cost wise it may be cheaper. Then you'd have 2 X-Wings and 4 TIE which is nice and extra dice (which you'll need). But again it depends on if you want one side or both.

An X-Wing and a TIE expansion is nice because of the cards. Wedge and Howlrunner are great pilots.

After that you can season to taste.

TIE Advanced only 1 (one) needed for Vader.

More X-Wings and/or TIE will depend on your tastes.

Y-Wing maximum 2 to start (1 would be fine). You'll like this as support ships.

TIE Interceptors - Cool

A-Wings - You may end up with them but get used to the game first.

Ok where would the nylon washers go on the dials. Thanks for all the good info.

Even if I don't play both sides I will most likly get at less one of each ship just to have them. They look great.

I think you'd take the dial apart, put the numbers part back on the peg, the washer, the top of the dial, then the cap. Create a little separation for the moving parts of the dial with graphics on them.
