Another Character Generator

By OggDude, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

Oh.. so I'm pretty sure my work computer won't allow for this and I have a MAc at home so no luck for me there! :)

Use Virtualbox Luke...er...DanteRotterdam...

I learned the hard way (MAC user BTW) about using VirtualBox. If you don't have a version of Windows to install, you can probably find a Windows image somewhere.

I would like to make a feature request.

Would it be possible to have an area where we could input, and then view, planet info. In a similar layout to the planets in the main books. Really only useful for a GM I suppose.

Next release is up. Not much in this one, but the create data folder bug needed fixing.

I'm now uploading four different things simultaneously, so it's going to take about 15-20 minutes to finish.

Release 1.1.0.12:

New Features and Enhancements:

  • Added support for removed setback for skills from the same sources that support boosts. A new icon (setback die with a red X) is used to show removal of setback. Since skills blocks can grow rather large, they now scale to the width of the skill column, so the entire skill block is shown.
  • Boosts/setbacks for skills now supports boosts/setbacks for all skills of a particular type (ie, knowledge, combat, general, etc).
  • Species options, talents, and adversary special abilities, along with the mod editor, now support added boosts/removed setback for skills.
  • Modified both Arkanians and Ortlans to support skill boost dice, along with a bunch of talents for both boosts and removal of setback.

Bug Fixes:

  • The career skills panel wasn't scrolling properly when the character generator window was small. It should now scroll if it is too small to show both skill grids.
  • The item attachment editor window would have its controls shrink strangely on high DPI screens with low resolution. It will now properly scale and gain scroll bars if the screen is too small for the content.
  • The default data directory was acquired correctly, but the folder itself was not being created. This would cause crashes when any of the apps were run. It is now created if it doesn't exist.
  • Attachment costs were incorrect. Not only was it ignoring silhouette multipliers for vehicles (which used to work fine), it was also charging a flat rate for options, instead of a graduated rate (this also used to work). Both have been fixed.

Ogg, I downloaded the latest version of the tool, but none of the data I had previously added (talents, item/vehicle/character descriptions) is loaded. It's all still there in my DataCustom folder, what do I need to do to get that all restored? I don't want to think I manually typed everything from the core rulebook and Suns of Fortune just have it all vanish. Am I going to have to copy and paste each description back into the DataEditor?

Thanks again!

Bug...

It is still not calculating Defense correctly if you have...

Armored Clothing

Superior Quality

Armor Master (Improved)

Sixth Sense / Superior Reflexes

You need to either transfer your old data to the new directory, or change the data directory to your old location. Check "More Options" from the launcher, then click either "Data Path" or "Transfer" buttons.

Thanks again!

I'm getting 3/3. What's it supposed to be?

Hmmm Maybe I am doing something wrong.

I shall figure it out!

Edit...

Found MY mistake. You, sir, rock!

So it looks like it costs a minimum of 150 XP to get 3/3 defense on your armored clothing :)

It's silly, but you get some nice stuff along the way. Considering Armored Clothing is the best armor I will see for quite awhile in our campaign, I was just looking for options when I ran across that.

What about something like this:

RemSetbackDie.png

ive got a question about this symbol

ive 2 career Mechanics skill and 1 bought Mechanics skill for a total of 3 Yellow dice

but two of these symbol showed up after the last update, does this mean 2 setback dice are now needed for each roll?

Those are the symbols for removing setback die.

My guess is that you have 2 ranks of Gearhead. Each rank removes a setback die to Mechanics checks.

No. It means that you subtract 2 setback dice from your roll.

Say the GM said the difficulty is 3 purple and 2 set back for that engine fire. You go ok and pick up 3 yellow and 3 purple. because you have talents that make you awesome as a mechanic.

ahh makes more sense now :D yeah ive two gearhead

thanks :)

it's good way to do it keeping it all together, speed up checks etc.

In shown weapons, you'll occasionally see a black square. This means you add setback equal to the black squares. This is the case if you use the blaster actuator attachment. Under skills (and in shown weapons), you'll occasionally see a black square with a red X in it. This means you can remove that number of setback that the GM imposes on the roll. Black square = bad (add setback), black square with red X = good (remove that number of setback).

Also, equipment or talents that add, say, encumbrance, or damage, or soak, defense, etc., will already have those values added to your character, or to equipped items. If a talent adds to your soak or defense, the displayed soak or defense values will already have it. If a talent adds damage to a weapon, the weapon will already have the damage added if it is equipped. If it's not equipped, its base damage will be displayed. Added damage for weapons (such as for Feral Strength) will show up both under "shown weapons" on page one, and in your inventory, again, assuming they're equipped. If a talent or attachment adds or removes a quality, the proper quality list will be displayed with the weapon or armor.

Awesome character generator thanks!

For droid characters equipment should have a check box for it being a built in. which means it does not encumber the character.

For droid characters equipment should have a check box for it being a built in. which means it does not encumber the character.

There's nothing in the rules that says built-in gear isn't applied to a Droid PCs encumbrance. The only benefit that "built in" applies is that it can't be easily removed from the droid. The sidebar on page 47 of the core rulebook (where built-in gear) is talked about makes no mention of Encumbrance at all.

And it makes sense, otherwise you could have droid PCs simply declaring high Encumbrance items like a heavy blaster rifle, a vibro-ax, or heavy battle armor as "built-in" and not only are said items impossibly to disarm/remove under normal conditions, but they'd be making out like a bandit on the amount of stuff they can cram into their metal bodies if things like those didn't apply their Encumbrance value against the PC's threshold.

As far as I know, built-in equipment for droids still count against encumbrance. Their built-in nature is a narrative device only.

If you want to keep track of which items are built-in, you can use the equipment notes feature.

Found a mini-bug

If you have armor and it's equipped, the PC total encumberance properly reflects it. If you uncheck the equipped but leave the held (like you took it off but are still carrying it), it still reflects enc as if you were wearing it. I tried clicking elsewhere/on other items, but it only updates to show proper enc when "held" is toggled for any armor (the one in question or any other piece) or change to another item category (when "gear" or "weapons" is clicked, it properly refreshes)

Again, it's nothing major, just something I noticed not behaving properly.

Yeah, what he said :) That's a better explanation than what I made.

It's just another case of the encumbrance label not being updated in all instances. If you look at the summary panel at the bottom, you'll notice the correct encumbrance right after you uncheck "equipped". I think I need to do this another way; this is about the third time this bug has cropped up in different places.

I notice that not a lot of people are using the web install. Let me extol its virtues for a bit:

  • No Copying - You don't have to copy files, or unzip anything to folders. You just run the setup program.
  • Automatic download - Once you run the setup program, the software will automatically download itself
  • Automatic Install - The software installs itself, creates a short cut, and even adds itself to the Programs and Features control panel so you can uninstall it, or revert to a previous version, at a future date.
  • Automatic Update - Whenever you run the launcher after it's installed, it'll check to see if there's an update. If there is, it'll automatically be installed before the launcher is run. You never have to worry about downloading the latest version.
  • Incremental Update - When an update is found, only the changed files are downloaded, not every file, as in the ZIP install. So, in most updates, only the EXE and DLL files are downloaded, and maybe an XML file or two, that's it.

In case anyone's curious, the original DropBox ZIP file download gets about 100 or so clicks a day, whereas the web install gets maybe 10. Not a lot of people know about the Google Drive links yet, so they get about 15 and 8 clicks a day.

The original link has gotten close to 18,000 clicks since I first put it up back in August 2013.

I'm still working out the google drive/dropbox bit and trying to figure out if I can share one dataset (on my google drive or my GM's dropbox) with my entire group. Once that's figured out, I'll probably look into the web install.

The main reason that I haven't yet, is that every version tends to throw in a little bug or two. By waiting and doing the manual install I can avoid some of those.

I'll get there eventually though.

Am using the Web Install and I have the Data stuff stored in my Onedrive (Skydrive) folder. I have the App installed on main PC, Laptop and Surface and all are sharing the data happily.
