Another Character Generator

By OggDude, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

One typo found and a comment. Under the Holocrons the Outer Rim Knowledge/Piloting Holocron costs 1000003 credits. The comment? I LOL'ed at the picture you used for the horse in the riding beasts in the gear section. Good job.

So, here's a question. How do I extract/install this new version without completely wiping out all the work I did on the old version? Like, I've got eight or so characters saved in the editor, and I did a bunch of work filling in Talents and I don't want all that destroyed.

best way is to do the webinstall which will automatically detect and install the new version. the manual installs you need to uninstall and reinstall. but it does not destroy your data.

Hmmmmm. I tried the web install from G-Drive, it ran through installation, then I got an error at the end stating, "Cannot download the application. The application is missing required files. Contact application vendor for assistance". I grabbed the "Details" on that error, but it's a huge .txt document. Then I tried it from Dropbox and got, "You cannot start application Star Wars Character Generator and GM Tools from this location because it is already installed from a different location." Uhhhhhhhhhhh... okay.

So, I have the previous version of the character generator "installed", in that I extracted it from the zip file into a folder, on my desktop. The web install links downloaded the "setup.exe" file to my desktop as well. What am I doing wrong here?

Your not doing anything wrong. The Google Drive client doesn't always sync things properly and files occasionally go missing for no reason when I deploy my apps to it. It's annoying. DropBox is much more reliable, but it has bandwidth limits that sometimes prevent people from downloading if it gets too busy.

Try using the DropBox link and see if that solves the problem. I know I used it myself earlier today and it installed without a glitch.

I just tried using the Dropbox link, and it tells me it won't run because I've installed the program from somewhere else (the google link?). Should I uninstall the program and then run from the Dropbox link?

yes uninstall reinstall using new dropbox web install link

So I am mucking around with a character and tried adding refined cortosis guantlets and dual wield shoto lightsabers and it wont let you equip all 3....I would think that cortosis guantlets would not technically use up your hands per say :P

They're all weapons; you're limited to two, and the generator doesn't make judgement calls :) I could allow more weapons to be equipped, but I have a feeling someone will complain that they're allowed to equip four blaster pistols :)

The gauntlets don't make any changes to your character, so you don't actually need to equip them. Just equip the lightsabers, and then "show" all three on the front page. Make sure it's at least "held" so your encumbrance will be correct.

This ruling of only two weapons is speciesist against Xexto! Also, am I the only one that feels the "Equip" and "Held" checkboxes are backwards? I would say I was equipped with a blaster if it was in the holster on my hip, but it would need to be in my hand for me to be holding it.

You know....he is right. Equipped and held should be flipped. As held would be whats in your hand and equipped would be what you have on your person. It would also be nice to designate what containers items are in. IE What did I put on my utility belt? in my surveyors bag etc?

I also realized a starting credit button would be good...trick is to get it to not be abused :P though I guess the award for credits could be abused

I think the concept of "equipped" comes from videogames.

Typically in a game you can "hold" as many rifles as you want, but you "equip" a rifle to use it in combat, and you can only equip one. (or two, if it's something duel-wielded).

Yeah, pretty much. I figured most people would already be used to the term because it's used in pretty much every old-school computer RPG I'd ever played. Plus, the "equipped' status came first, then I realized I needed separate "held" status. I used "held" because "on your person and causing encumbrance, but not being utilized in the fashion in which it was intended" didn't fit in the grid column :D

As for them being backward... what about armor? :) Should you get benefits if you equip your armor, or if you hold your armor?

You get the benefits from equiping armor...As holding it would have it in your hands :P

I had a good idea today. Nothing spectacular, but the next version of the software will have seven pieces of generic gear. They'll be set at an encumbrance value of between 0 and 6. Using the Rename and Notes feature, you can make them into whatever you want, as long as they're 6 encumbrance or less. This way, you don't have to add unique or minor gear using the data editor every time someone picks up something that's not in the gear list.

That is an excellent idea. I have a player that is a bit of a hoarder and picks up random junk I mention as part of the ambiance.

I've Been Having Trouble Getting The Signature Abilities To Work. I See Them In The Data Editor, But IM Not Able To Get Them. At Least I Think I Saw Them...

Hum, I don't know, but the latest update messed up the armor calculation of the following character:

Lightsaber with Lorrdian gemstone (fully upgraded/modded) : Defensive 3, Deflection 2

Cortosis Shield, equipped in the other hand : Defensive 2, Deflection 2

Heavy Battle Armor with Jury Rigged [increase Ranged Defense +1] : melee Defense 1, ranged Defense 2

The totals used to give me 6 ranged/6 melee , but since 1.3.6.0 it gives me 5r/5m

I've tried many permutations to see where the problem was:

Removing the armor gives me 4r/5m, as should be, since armor is 2 ranged def and 1 melee def, meaning the two other items are considered to be stacking.

Removing the shield gives me 3r/4m... which I don't understand (should be 4r/4m without shield)

Removing the 'saber gives me 3r/2m... which is again wrong (should be 4r/3m without 'saber)

I don't think the fix to armor stacking was meant to remove the stacking of Defensive / Deflection, since nothing in the rules bar them from stacking (and a most GMs would agree a shield's defense should stack with a lightsaber's...)

Edit: just checked, the wrong totals appear both on the printed sheet and the "character summary" bar at the bottom of the CharGen.

Edit #2: While I'm at it, the Lightsaber damage calculation on the item page is wrong (usually last page), since the base damage (7) saber gets erroneously boosted by Brawn (4), giving a misleading total of 11 on screen. The one on the front page is functionning well though (i.e. 7 damage). God, am I spending that much time in the editor? :P

To get the Signature Abilities to appear, you first need to have a career that has signature abilities (so far, Explorer, Colonist, Hired Gun, or Ace). Then, you need to have bought down a career specialization tree to the bottom row and purchased the talents in the proper columns, as defined by the signature ability. When you do that, the Signature Abilities button will show up and you'll be allowed to purchase a signature ability.

Note that not all of them may be available, depending on which bottom row talents you've purchased. The specialization to attach the signature ability MUST come from your career, and you cannot purchase signature abilities from another career, even if you have a non-career specialization for it.

You are correct, the calculations were wrong. Each attribute (defense included) has a number of different sources, which all add up to the final value. I was using the same source for both weapon qualities and armor, so it got a bit screwy. Incidentally, the values would be different depending on the order you bought the armor and the weapon :) Anyway, the weapon qualities now use their own source, so the armor-stacking code won't step on weapon qualities (or "add defense" mods). Problem solved.

And you're right about the other one, too. I had changed lightsaber calculations for the "shown" weapons, but forgot to change it for weapon lists. That's been fixed, too.

It looks like the next release will be sooner rather than later :) I do have to add a new feature, however... splitting item stacks :) It's going to be needed for the new generic items, plus everyone wants it anyway.

I know this would probably be a ton of work for you, but... Would it be possible to put Riding Beasts and Droids in a separate category from regular Gear since you don't really carry them around? Then you could have it actually print out your follower's/companion's/slave's statblock (like it does for vehicles) instead of just being a line item in your inventory.

Also, I just noticed that the Droids category only includes those listed in the Gear and Equipment sections from the various books. Shouldn't almost all the Adversary Droids be included too, since most of them have costs and rarities? I could definitely do it myself (and will, if it comes up), but that would only help my group, not everyone who uses the program.

Great work on the program so far. It makes things so much simpler with both groups I'm in using it both for just regular character maintenance and consistency of character sheets. (I kind of hate when people all have different custom sheets and you are trying to find where on that sheet it lists their credits on hand or something.) I look forward to the Homesteads and Businesses from Far Horizons. Thanks for all the time you put into this.

As long as you're adding features ;) could you add a Hard Points column in the gear displays? Sometimes it'd be really nice to be able to sort on HP. Also, being able to filter based upon weapon skill would be very helpful as well (though I know one of the new pieces of gear can be used with 2 weapon skills).

The Amount Of Work Put Into This Is Staggering. I Hope You Have Fun With it

Your welcome! What I've done in the past for droid companions is just go into the GM Tools, copy a stat block for whatever adversary you want, then paste it into a Word (or whatever) document. Then I'll print that and cut it down to size. Alternatively, you can create an encounter sheet for your NPC and print that. That way you'll be all set for using it in combat.

As for the droid or animal "gear", just don't click the "Held" box and you're set :) Yeah, it would be cool to have a special sheet just for NPC companions, like you do for vehicles, but it's not on the top of my to-do list right now :)

I may release a bug-fix version just to you guys later today. I need some testing on the split/combine and reorder features I just added. They affect the GUI and there could be some weird issues lurking in that that I haven't seen.

Basically, when you add/purchase an item with no HP, there's a checkbox which asks you if you want to stack it or not. If not, it gets its own item entry. You can then click that item and click the new "Split" button to split the stack into multiple stacks, or click the "Combine" button to combine all similar items into one stack. I also added code that differentiates between the same item that's been renamed to something else so they're treated like unique items.

Two features for ordering (since a number of you have wanted to change the order of, say, weapons displayed on the front page). First, if you sort by a column, you can now unsort by control-clicking on the header (this is for the owned equipment grid only). It'll then display your items in the order in which you bought them. Also, you can drag an item on top of another item and it will become inserted above that item, changing the internal order of your items.

Anyway, there could be repercussions from these changes that I haven't seen, so I'd like to have someone other than myself do some testing on it. I'll let you know when it becomes available.

The ordering sounds cool. Will it also order a pizza or Chinese?

Anyone remember the /pizza command in Everquest 2 when they teamed up with pizzahut to order pizzas in game? why don't modern games do that?

I second the idea of online pizza ordering built into the generator. =)

Well... OK :D The next version of the software will have an Easter egg that will allow you to order pizza :) The trick is figuring out how to activate it (and no reverse compiling and peeking at the source code).

Another question where the answer is likely buried in the 168 pages of the thread, but how do I set my Data Editor path for the Generator to go to my Dropbox, and how do my players do the same?

I've got the Dropbox App downloaded to my PC's desktop, it's just not clear to me how I set it to work with the Data Editor, or how other PCs access my Dropbox folder from their computer. I imagine they also have to download the Dropbox app, but what then?

Finally, once I set this up, will someone else in my group be able to go into the data editor on their computer and make changes to the file in the Dropbox? Will those changes update on everyone else's generator when they fire up the generator?

Sorry for the request for tech support on this. I know just enough to be dangerous to myself. ;D
