Another Character Generator

By OggDude, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

By the way, this is my first release after installing Windows 7 64-bit on my computer. This could have some impact on the deployment process, I don't know. If something is screwy with the installs, let me know.

So I am guessing it would be bad to mention that Microsoft just ended mainstream support for Windows 7 today. - http://www.tomshardware.com/news/mainstream-support-ends-windows-7,28389.html

I'm good with it :) My other computer has been running XP for over 10 years and I haven't had a single issue with it, so old or new doesn't matter, I just care about how dependable the OS is. I had Vista 32-bit before, and hated it. It would blue screen on a regular basis, would have fits of slow motion where everything just ground to a halt, and would constantly run low on memory with its funky memory management. After installing Windows 7/64, it's like I bought a whole new computer! Vista didn't see my extra RAM, and now, I can have 50 GIMP windows up, the Visual Studio 2012 IDE with all my source code, 20 or more web pages, and maybe even a game in the background, and I'm barely going past 30% memory. I did manage to get it to blue screen just once :) but I think it was VS 2012's fault.

So, would now be a good time to ask about the “Shockrider Crash Suit” and ask how that is different from the “A/KT Shockrider Crash Suit”? ;)

Also, I’m pretty sure that Concealing Robes have some actual mechanical benefit beyond their Soak, but I’m AFB at the moment so I can’t look up the specifics.

When I try and install via google web install it gets to 60.6 megs and then fails

I did the web install via the DropBox link, and that worked fine for me — once I got around the anti-virus and security software that was trying to prevent me from running some “unknown” piece of code.

I just installed from Drop Box and it worked fine. I checked on Google Drive about 20 minutes ago and it was still syncing files, so you might want to try it again (it appears to be finished now). Google Drive takes forever to sync up for some reason.

Woot! Now I can spend those XP's I've been saving for the Rigger spec.

Just ignore the first one :) It has incorrect mods anyway. And yes, concealing robes should have a misc mod. I'll make changes for both.

Edit: Actually, belay that. Use the first one, even though it's incorrect. I'll be updating it in the next bug fix release and removing the one I added for SoT.

The Hardpoint cost of a Helmet mounted comlink is calculating wrong. it says it takes a hardpoint when it should not.

Where were you this morning before I did the release? :)

It's been fixed.

So I am mucking around with a character and tried adding refined cortosis guantlets and dual wield shoto lightsabers and it wont let you equip all 3....I would think that cortosis guantlets would not technically use up your hands per say :P

So, here's a question. How do I extract/install this new version without completely wiping out all the work I did on the old version? Like, I've got eight or so characters saved in the editor, and I did a bunch of work filling in Talents and I don't want all that destroyed.

best way is to do the webinstall which will automatically detect and install the new version. the manual installs you need to uninstall and reinstall. but it does not destroy your data.

Right on. Web install it is, then.

Found another error.
In the wilderness survival pack it it says it has "Then ration packs" Should be ten I am guessing.
Is there a way to have it when you purchase on add all of the individual items instead of lumping them all as one entry?

Since we proofreading, there's an error in the A/KT Shockrider suit. The first option reduces strain from the character received from Crits dealt to his ship or vehicle, it doesn't reduce a ship or vehicle's System Strain. It just needs reworded.

Hmmmmm. I tried the web install from G-Drive, it ran through installation, then I got an error at the end stating, "Cannot download the application. The application is missing required files. Contact application vendor for assistance". I grabbed the "Details" on that error, but it's a huge .txt document. Then I tried it from Dropbox and got, "You cannot start application Star Wars Character Generator and GM Tools from this location because it is already installed from a different location." Uhhhhhhhhhhh... okay.

So, I have the previous version of the character generator "installed", in that I extracted it from the zip file into a folder, on my desktop. The web install links downloaded the "setup.exe" file to my desktop as well. What am I doing wrong here?

You aughta know by now that it takes time to do Q/A.

Long enough that Q/A doesn’t finish until right after the release is done. ;)

No longer AFB. Mechanical effect for Concealing Robes is (F&D Beta, page 126):

Thanks to their cut and construction, concealing robes add [sE] to checks to notice or recognize individuals wearing them.

They're all weapons; you're limited to two, and the generator doesn't make judgement calls :) I could allow more weapons to be equipped, but I have a feeling someone will complain that they're allowed to equip four blaster pistols :)

The gauntlets don't make any changes to your character, so you don't actually need to equip them. Just equip the lightsabers, and then "show" all three on the front page. Make sure it's at least "held" so your encumbrance will be correct.

The custom data directory, by default, is in your Windows local storage, not in the program directory. The next time you run the launcher, click "Data Folder" to bring up the real folder where your data is stored. This directory can be changed to be wherever you want it, as well. This can be useful if you want to use cloud storage for your data so you can share it with other people.

Here's basically how it works: the program comes with a "Data" folder that contains all of the main data files that are never changed, except by me between releases. When you add descriptions, or new items, that goes in the "DataCustom" folder that's located somewhere else (as I said, it defaults to be in your Windows local storage, but you can set it to be anywhere). When the apps are run, the main data is combined with the custom data to form the actual set of data that's used by the programs.

So, unless you did something silly, like creating your DataCustom directory inside your install directory (that's a big no-no), you can confidently delete your old install directory and create a new one when you install the latest ZIP file.

The web install is generally easier to deal with, but neither will harm your custom data. In fact, if you run the Data Editor, there's a button that lets you back up all of your data (including all named data sets) to a ZIP file for safe keeping. If you want to "backup" an individual data set, you can do that by clicking "Export" when the data set is selected. If your hard drive goes kaput and you lose your custom data folder, you can just restore it from the backup and it's all back, good as new.

The default description just has a page reference, so the typo is in your custom description :) And no, the inventory isn't that complex. Just add the 10 ration packs and don't "hold" them, or something similar.

Yeah, someone found that. The next release will actually remove the extra entry I made for the one in Stay on Target and fix the existing entry from Enter the Unknown. So don't buy the A/KT version, even though it's correct; buy the "Shockrider Crash Suit" and you'll be set when the next version comes out.

Your not doing anything wrong. The Google Drive client doesn't always sync things properly and files occasionally go missing for no reason when I deploy my apps to it. It's annoying. DropBox is much more reliable, but it has bandwidth limits that sometimes prevent people from downloading if it gets too busy.

Try using the DropBox link and see if that solves the problem. I know I used it myself earlier today and it installed without a glitch.

I was thinking it would be cool to buy the bundle and have it add the individual items to your character sheet.
